Now I'm of consenting age to be forgetting you in a cabaret
Somewhere downtown where a burlesque queen may even ask my name
As she sheds her skin on stage
I'm seated and sweating to a dance song on the club's P.A.
The strip joint veteran sits two away
Smirking between dignified sips of his dignified peach and lime daiquiri

And isn't this exactly where you'd like me
I'm exactly where you'd like me, you know
Praying for love in a lap dance and paying in naivety
Oh, and isn't this exactly where you'd like me
I'm exactly where you'd like me, you know
Praying for love in a lap dance and paying in naivety

Oh, but I'm afraid that I
Well, I may of faked it
And I wouldn't be caught dead in this place

Well, I'm afraid that I
Well, that's right, well, I may have faked it
And I wouldn't be caught dead in this place

And isn't this exactly where you'd like me
I'm exactly where you'd like me, you know
Praying for love in a lap dance and paying in naivety
Oh, and isn't this exactly where you'd like me
I'm exactly where you'd like me, you know
Praying for love in a lap dance and paying in naivety

Well, I'm afraid that I
Well, I may of faked it
And I wouldn't be caught dead in this place

Well, I'm afraid that I
Well, that's right, well I may have faked it
And I wouldn't be caught dead in this place

And isn't this exactly where you'd like me
I'm exactly where you'd like me, you know
Praying for love in a lap dance and paying in naivety
Oh, and isn't this exactly where you'd like me
I'm exactly where you'd like me, you know
Praying for love in a lap dance and paying in naivety

Praying for love and paying in naivety
Praying for love and paying in naivety, oh

General Comment:This song makes me think of the movie "Moulin Rouge!"

If you haven't seen Moulin Rouge!, it is basically about a guy, Christian, who is a writer. He comes to a strip joint, the Moulin Rouge, to work on a play. The first day he's there, he is mistaken for the Duke and is set up for an appointment with the most sought-after prostitute of the club, Satine. Christian thinks it's a poetry reading, and she thinks he's a client. He recites/sings Your Song by Elton John. Satine quickly confesses her love for him referring to him as the Duke but he tells her he isn't the Duke. She can't be with him and he wants her, but he doesn't have the money to pay.

"Oh, but I'm afraid that I
Well, I may of faked it
And I wouldn't be caught dead in this place" ------ Christian realizes Satine thinks he's the Duke and it isn't a poetry reading.

"Praying for love and a lap dance and paying in naivety." --------- Christian loves Satine but he can't pay, only in naivety.

"And isn't this exactly where you'd like me" ---- Possibly what Christian thinks, kind of like 'Oh, you wish I was the Duke.'

"Somewhere downtown where a burlesque queen may even ask my name
As she sheds her skin on stage
I'm seated and sweating to a dance song on the club's P.A." -------- When Christian first sees Satine, she is singing and dancing, and she is all over him in the crowd.

So that's my interpretation of the song, I hope it's not too far fetched.

My Opinion:I think the song is about a young lad who is 'in love' with a girl who doesn't even acknowledge him, He goes to a strip club for attention and hopes to make her jealous or maybe she acknowledge's him but she doesn't think he's 'man enough' to be her boyfriend.

''Now I'm of consenting age to be forgetting you in a cabaret''
He's saying 'im old enough to go and i can forget about you easy when there's proper 'women' around.'

''Somewhere downtown where a burlesque queen may even ask my name''
A dig at th fact the girl doesn't take the time to know him yet a stripper would.

''I'm seated and sweating to a dance song on the club's P.A.''
He's nervous because he doesn't really want to be there but he thinks it's the why for her to notice him.

''And isn't this exactly where you'd like me
I'm exactly where you'd like me, you know
Praying for love in a lap dance and paying in naivety''
'and isn't this exactly where you'd like me I'm exactly where you'd like me'
Suggests that he's there for her to show that he is 'man eough' because he's at a strip joint, where all the manly men would go.
'Praying for in a lap dance and paying in naivety'
obviously he would like to be loved but he is naive to think it'd come from a lap dancer who is just doing her job.

''Well, I may of faked it
And I wouldn't be caught dead in this place''
Again something that suggests he doesn't want to be there cause he's not used to sleezy places but he goes to try and prove he' a Man.

Well that's my ideas of what the lines mean :) Marvelous song!! ;D

General Comment:Actually I think it all falls back to the movie Closer. You will have to have seen the movie to understand what I saying. But if you watch you will see that Anna and Larry get married even though she is having an affair with Dan which leads us back to "I write sins not tragedies" where there is a wedding but the bride is a whore. Then after one year of marriage Anna leaves Larry for Dan, and Larry is devastated and says that he is better than Dan (lying is the most...). And after that, Larry hits a strip club and is practilly begging Alice(stripper) for her to love him, and says he loves her, but actually he is FAKING it, he loves Anna. And also the obvious song titles which are quotes from the moive except for I write sins.... (:

General Comment:oh and i might add it doesnt have to apply just to a lapdance literally, it could just be a relationship where he feels she is using him for sex/power/whatever and hes using her to feel wanted and so he's sort of trapped even though he knows he's being silly, he can't stop it. but it feels degrading for him...like a lapdance - im guessing lol

General Comment:i think this is well like the situation in closer - where clive owens character larry feels really unloved and stuff and he goes to this stripclub and finds alice, and wants ehr to love him. he feels pathetic because he's "praying for love in a lapdance", and is also in a bit of denial "i wouldnt be caught dead in this place" er..."isnt this exactly where you like me" reflects his paranoia that alice is enjoying the power she has over him

General Comment:this song, along with lying is the most fun a girl can have with out taking her clothes off is about the film closer..
the titles are a line in the film...
    1. guy finds out wife has cheated
    2. asks her if hes better in bed...(LITMF)
    3. he goes to the strip club to 4get her/revenge... in the film he's trying to find the stripper, who's "boyfriend" f*cked his wife
4.(i write sins not tradgies) links with him been reminded of her cheating and the fact it happened.

General Comment:HEllo people! his wife knows he'll be there which is why she goes to confirm he's cheating on her.
and the line ".. preying in naivety" means she wants him to act is if he's so innocent, hence the NAIVETY.(naive refers to him not knowing what he's doing, but we know he does.)DUH!

General Comment:well it's about how his girlfriend is always how do you say, um well scared and worried that her boyfriend works at an illegal strip club, which when this takes place most strip clubs were illegal. anyways he's talking about how his job is to sing at an illegal strip club *which the fiance' doesn't know* and while he's working he tells you what he sees such as a veteran sippin' at his drink a stripper gives him a lapdance and it turns out it was the fiance, and that's why she was paranoid in the beginning with him being at illegal clubs and then the police come in and she gets taken away for being a stripper and he gets taken away too, and they're in teh car together and that's what he means by "i'm exactly where you like me" because they're together with each other
