Lyrics for Poster of a Girl as interpreted by public

Poster of a Girl Lyrics
Can't stand by myself
Hate to sleep alone
Surprises always help
So I take somebody home
To find out how I feel
Feel like just a baby
Portrait of a lady
Poster of a girl

Satisfy myself
Avoid beginners
Who long to shut my mouth
Till I take one of them home
'Cause I know how it feels
Filling in the blanks
Looking on the bright side
When there is no bright side
Coming in your pants
For the off chance
With a poster of a girl

Here's the french bit:

Incapable de rester toute seule
Je deteste dormir sans une présence
Les surprises semblent alléger ma solitude
Alors je ramène quelqu'un dans mon lit
Afin de découvrir comment je me sens
Comme un bébé
Portrait d'une femme
Affiche d'une fille

Me satisfaire
Eviter les novices
Ceux qui cherchent à me faire taire
Jusqu'à ce que je rentre avec l'un d'eux
Car je connais la sensation
De chercher le fil d'or
Et de ne jamais le trouver
(Coming in your pants)

this is my favorite song on Live it Out. It's really sad too though, makes me depressed yet happy every time I listen to it...

Ok, straight from the horse's mouth, Metric. On their site they are looking for extras for their next video (Poster of a Girl, yay!) and they put this:

Poster of a Girl, the latest video for Metric, is a psychological thriller set in an after-hours voyeuristic night club.

There ya go, quite interessting, n'est pas?
By the way, the french part is just the english part, translated. Case you're wondering

i think there might be more to this song than it may seem...it really reminds me of someone i know, just because the girl in the song doesn't seem to know who she is and she sort of needs someone to tell her that and to confirm that she's really there. she feels kind of confined inside her "poster" of a life. anyway that's my take on it...but i'm not totally sure does anyone else have ideas?

this song is about a girl that doesnt know herself and needs someone to tell her. thats why she cant stand being by herself becuase when she is alone she doesnt know who she is. she has to go with what society wants her to be. shes doing things she doesnt nessesarily want to.

no ones seems to have mentionned that emily is also expressing the fact that fans tend to fall in love with a poster of herself (aka emily on stage) and not emily, the person behind the music. "On ne peut pas fabriquer la vérité" for those who don't speak french means "we can not construct reality." i think emily is trying to say that guys that "fall in love" with her tend are truely falling in love with something abstract, constructing a false reality.

Sinstone, "On new peut pas favriquer la verite" can also mean "We can not creat the truth", just thought I'd add that

T'is 'bout masturbation to a poster of her, but its not the real thing and she's sick of thinking that these people do that.

So has anyone seen the video? Playing on the old Doppelganger theory that everyone in the world has an exact duplicate and some believe if you ever encounter your doppelganger that you'll instantly die. (I'm not sure why exactly you would die, but that's the theory...perhaps intense shock of seeing someone that looks exactly like you)

Wow I didn't know you were supposed to die with the Doppelganger theory.
I like this song. The radio edit cuts out the French bit and the video edit puts the French at the beginning. I love how she just goes "coming in your pants" randomly in the middle of all the French.

To me, the song is about a girl who goes out to find a guy to take home, but none of them are right, they're too young/virgin, etc. and she wants to satisfy herself and doesn't care about anyone else.

the last french part tranlates to:

I know that you do not like your reality
You know that I do not like your reality
You know that I do not like my reality
Nobody knows what it is
One can not create the truth

this part is not stated in english, maybe it helps clarify the meaning to you.

This song is about one of those girls who doesnt know who she is, therefore she sleeps around just to have someone to be close to. She feels like just an image, just something pretty to look at that doesnt think or feel. I think there are a lot of people in the world who are like this, trying to validate their simple existance by having sex with strangers.

i agree with Metro47. I also think the fact that she juxtaposes 'portrait of a lady' with 'picture of a girl' serves to make 'picture of a girl' sound cheap, and this is how she feels. I can, unfortunately, relate to this song.

I totally agree with Sinstone and Lexi1987. I love this song, and I also agree with the Doppelganger Theory, because in the video, there were two Emilys: One was walking around the streets alone, and one was up on stage preforming. When their eyes met, the street Emily either fainted or died..(I dunno which one)

Incapable of staying along
I hate sleeping without someone there
Surprises seem to lighten my solitude
So I draw someone back to my bed
Just to find out how I feel
Like a baby
Portrait of a lady
Poster of a girl

To satisfy myself.
To avoid novices -
those who want to make me shut up
until I come back with one of them
so I know how it feels
to look for a Golden Boy
and to never find him
(coming in your pants),
thinking of nothing but
fucking a poster of a girl

Je sais que tu n'aimes pas ta réalité
Tu sais que je n'aime pas ta réalité
Tu sais que je n'aime pas ma réalité
Personne ne sait ce que c'est

On ne peut pas fabriquer la vérité

I hope that was ok, my French is ropey.

this song is about the sexual nature of human beings both male and female...everyone has desires they want to fulfill and this sometimes drives us all to be a bit pahetic...sleeping around etc.
i think the whole poster, portrait thing is just a metaphor for the empiness of the sex theres no emotions attached its meaningless, flat, only a poster
