Lyrics for Heaven Forbid as interpreted by Alli-oh!

Heaven Forbid Lyrics
Twenty years it's breaking
You down, now that you
Understand there's no one around.
Take a breath, just take a seat, you're
Falling apart and tearing at the seams.

Heaven forbid you end up
Alone and don't know why
Hold on tight, wait for tomorrow,
You'll be alright.

It's on your face, is it on your mind,
Would you care to
Build a house of your own?
How much longer,
How long can you wait,
It's like you wanted to go
And give yourself away.

Heaven forbid you end up
Alone and don't know why
Hold on tight, wait for tomorrow,
You'll be alright.

It feels good.
Is that reason enough for you?
It feels good.
Is that reason enough for you?

Heaven forbid you end up
Alone and don't know why
Hold on tight, wait for tomorrow,
You'll be alright.
Heaven forbid you end up
Alone and don't know why
Hold on tight, wait for tomorrow,
You'll be alright.

Out of this one
Don't know how to get you out of this one,
Don't know how to get you out of this one,
Don't know how to get you out of this one,
Don't know how to get you out of this one.

I see this as a chick who has never actually had a companion, but the opportunity has arrived where she has what she sees as a 'hope' of love. But the singer(who is probs a friend of hers)knows the relationship isn't right, and she is going into it for the wrong reasons. He is advising her to just hold on and wait, don't give into the temptation. He says 'it feels good, is that reason enough for you?' which once again implys slightly the situation. By the end he seems drained and out of advice by saying 'Don't know how to get you out of this one'.....it's a great song very emotional with true feelings.

Maybe about a women who is in a relationship that she doesn't think she could work out. . . a young women. I think the 'twenty years' is a metaphor. But then again, I shouldn't overanalyze lyrics. Good song, though. Love it.

I think it's about an ex girlfriend who's on the rebound. She has to have someone all the time and she throws herself into relationships and realizes they're not right for her. He's mocking her in a sense with the chorus. He wants to help her but he doesn't know what will get through to her.

I personally love this song.

I believe that the song is about a person who has never had a relationship and finds someone like a hookup and gets hurt. They think they need to give up on relationships all together. The songwriter is giving advice by saying its okay to be alone and not have anyone. He is getting frustratred hence the "Heaven forbid you end up
Alone and don't know why"
He is somewhat mocking the person
But he also cares for this person and tells them to not give up.
I can relate to this song because i have never been in a relationship and can realize that its tough.

I love the fray.

i think this song's about someone who spent their (twenty years of) life casually dating, thinking they had their entire life to settle into a committed relationship. they probably reached a point where they find that all their friends are in relationships, & they're on their own, kind of "alone" since their friends are all off doing their own things in their relationships, & they panic that they might be alone the rest of their lives. when you reach your 20s & you're on your own, you start wondering whether you'll find somebody who's right for you, & start wondering if you should just go it alone & start leading your life solo. rather than "build a house on your own," you might opt to just "give yourself away" in an effort to find somebody, anybody, who'll keep you from being alone. the song is saying, in a sense, that it's not so horrible being alone ("heaven forbid you end up alone"), & that instead of just trying to find any random person to spend your life with, just hold out for the right person for you.

i think this song is about someone who had a relationship with another person, and that person really had some issues with everyone they had a relationship with, and really cant make relationships work. the person who broke it off with them is kind of saying, "twenty years from now youll STILL be alone, and maybe you'll finally understand why." its kind of mocking that they wont understand why and they will still, heaven forbid, be alone. they just let everyone good go, and dont think twice about why all thier relationships fail. and no one can help them anymore. just what i think haha

i mostly agree with votre_mere about the vocals mocking the person the singer is talking to. however i feel that the singer is mocking this person because the person apparently makes bullshit hook ups because
"it feels good"
and for her, that is reason enough to keep on with actions. she doesn't commit to all these "hook ups", for whatever reason, and ends up hurt everytime, with the singer comforting her. though this last one he either can't help her this time, or just doesn't want to because he's tired of being hurt by her not seeing he is a great guy.

poop.

It's about drugs.

I think it can be interpreted several ways. Firstly theres the whole drug thing "It feel's good.. is that reason enough for you?" Is very relevant to drug use, eg heroin. "Tearing at the seams etc, the damage the drugs have done" "Heaven forbid you end up alone, and don't know why, hold on tight and wait for tomorrow..." The drugs are isolating her from everyone else, hes telling her to hold on and it will be alright, to be strong and avoid the drugs etc.

Then theres the whole aspect that she could be just a promiscuous girl 'u end up alone and dont know why' 'it feels good' applies in the same way 'twenty years now' 'wait for tomorrow' could be a form of mocking the girl. 'dont know how to get u out of this one' he doesn't know how to stop her acting so promiscuously, its going to hurt her in the end

i prefer the drugs interpretation, 'its on your face' etc leads more strongly to that

Hey its funny that every time someone says something about a song about drugs the first thing that pops into my mund is puff the magic dragon! Anyway for some reason that part "it's on your face, is it on your mind, would you care to build a house of your own" speaks to me.

i believe this song is about someone who has had a significant other by her side just about all of her life, and she is so dependent on the other person, she feels like she can't live without being with someone. and the singer's point of view is a friend asking her to try to be independent for a while, that she'll only get stronger by being by herself, and to hang on, she'll find another.

This song is about someone who can't find love. Girl or boy. They start to think there is no one there for them. It's tearing them apart that they cannot find love. Should they worry about it all the time or just continue on with their life alone? Should this person settle down by theirself, get a house by theirself, or wait for a companion to do it with them? To make it short: It's about a lonely person (song leans more towards a girl) who just hit a certain age (twenty is the songs example, but really is more obtuse) but this person still has no companion in their life. They are confused and scared because they have to start settling down; get a house, ect. They are afraid they will grow old with no companion.

i love this song; the first time I really listened to it, lyrics and all and not just enjoying it for the melody, it really got to me, cause it's me; I'm 21, never had a relationship and I'm at this exact point. As pathetic as it may seem...this song made me feel better about it.

love this song. i have it on repeat right now actually. agree it's about a girl who's at a point in her life where she feels like she needs a relationship to complete her and will do anything even "give herself away" because she is dependent on having a guy by her side. she's not used to having to be independent and the singer is being sarcastic saying you're not gonna be alone your whole life. don't worry. but don't settle and you don't need all of the things you're putting yourself through. just turned 20 and this song defines me haha...

Why is there always at least one person who insists that a song has to be about drugs? I can see how that can be inferred but . . .

I personally agree with Kutmedeep. It seems to be a monologue of advice from a friend to a girl who is ready to throw herself at anyone, so as not to be alone. He mocks her desperate attitude, but wants to help her out. It's okay to be single.

a person is in a situation where they are afraid to be alone for their lives. the person they usually turn to for advice just keeps giving them reassuring words and has no concrete way to get them entirely out of the problem.

This song is about a girl who--similarly to myself-- has spent the past twenty(ish) years looking for something everyone else has but she can't find. She compensates for her lack of love by going for random hookups, meaningless short relationships, and nights spent alone.
The singer is a friend of hers, possibly a guy friend who cares for her, telling her that everything will be okay. He slightly mocks her actions by saying "heaven forbid you end up alone" but you can tell he has genuine concerns mixed in as well when he says "out of this one I don't know how to get you". He wants to get her out of the mess of relationships shes in but doesn't know hoe. Also, he's trying to warn her that things that feel (temporarily) good isn't reason enough to settle.

this song reminds me of my sister. i think she is just in the relationship she is currently in because she is afraid to be alone. and she had been with him so long and she wouldn't know what to do without him. she is so damn dependent. i know my sister won't end up alone, she is a beautiful amazing woman, she just needs to ditch the loser. but i definately don't know how to get her out of this one. i love this song. it was beautiful live in vegas.

I sort of agree with mmmbop.

In my opinion the singer cares alot for the subject of the song and is obviously trying to be there for her, even though she doesnt recognise it. I think the song uses alot of subtle inference rather than directly spelling it out. I see it as she (the subject of the song) is too busy looking around at other guys even though the answer is right next to her, and he's saying that if she ends up alone and doesnt realise what she could have had, it'd be a tragedy (heaven forbid) for them both.

I know the feeling, you have a close female friend, and you're there thinking, i'd do anything for you, i'd be everything you'd ever wanted, if you could only see it....but you can also see that she could easily miss out on it, and even end up on her own, and not realise what could ahve been....

where does the idea that this is about a girl come from? Not that it isn't, but why is it that everyone thinks it is?

The thing about truly good lyrics is that whilst they are concise enough to make sense and be able to give a meaning to, they are broad enough that we can all give them our own meaning - i can guarentee you that most people like a song because they can connect with what they think the singer is saying - so i like it because it touches me in a way that reminds me of a certain situation, which is where the girl came from ;)

Thats just my interpretation. There are no wrong answers, but there are stupid ones, i don't think mine falls into that category though ;)
