Looking for something I've never seen
Alone and I'm in between
The place that I'm from and the place that I'm in
A city I never been
I found a friend or should I say a foe
Said just a few things you should know
We don't want you to see we come and we go
Here today, gone tomorrow

We're only taking turns
Holding this world
It's how it's always been
When you're older you will understand

If I say who I know it just goes to show
You need me less than I need you
Take it from me we don't give sympathy
You can trust me trust nobody
But I said you and me we don't have honesty
The things we don't want to speak
I'll try to get out but I never will
Traffic is perfectly still

We're only taking turns
Holding this world
It's how it's always been
When you're older you will understand

And then again maybe you don't
And then again maybe you won't

When you're older you might understand
When you're older you might understand

General Comment:To me, this song is about how hard life is when your older. The song is told from the perspective of an adult, trying to explain adulthood to a child.

My Interpretation:This song perfectly explains my life at the moment. Im going to university next year, and scared s***less if im honest.

To me it seems to be about a person at the stepping stone between childhood and adulthood, where they're no longer in their comfort zone, and 'have' to suddenly experience and live life their not used to.

If there was a music video for this song, i can imagine it being of a young 9/10 year old girl or boy being a witness to really adult environments or just randomly being there. Then at the final stanza 'and then again maybe you wont' the child looking in a mirror and looking back would be a 20 year old.

-the moral being, not everyone feels ready to behave the age that they are.

General Comment:When i first heard this song i couldn't grasp what it was about, i couldn't for the life of me. I couldn't because i was looking for a single meaning. This song is about so many different things, every verse is a different thing entirely, that fits under one encompassing idea.

The main idea is that he is in a tough situation and explaining the world's problems to a child, who cant understand, like me or you couldn't. The Main Idea lies in the Chorus:

"When you're older you will understand. Then again maybe you don't. Then again maybe you wont."
The last sentence shows that maybe even he doesn't truly understand, as he is constantly torn between two different feelings of what the system is, however all he can see is this cycle of miscomprehension, and hes looking for something to break the cycle.

"I'm in between the place that I'm from and the place that I'm in. A city I've never been."
    Where he belongs.

"I found a friend of should i say a foe... We don't want you to see. We come and we go..."
    Who his friends are.

"If i say who i know then it just goes to show, you need me more than I need you."
Simply a representation of how brutal people (significant others) are, leading into his next statement.

"Take it from me, we don't give sympathy. You can trust me, trust nobody. But I said you and me, we don't have honesty. The things we don't want to speak."
A relationship where fake sympathy and love is given, so that each person doesn't feel as alone.

"I'll try to get out but i know i never will. Traffic is perfectly still."
    Trying to break the Cycle.

"When you're older you MIGHT understand."
This whole song is probably just another stage in the Cycle, where he thinks he understands. Miscomprehension.

General Comment:to me this song means two things, the first being a young person being excited and care free, going into the world and realizing that life inst all what it may have appeared to be.. the second being about a father explaining to his son/daughter about why their parents could no longer be together especially in the lines 'We're only taking turns Holding this world It's how it's always been When you're older you will understand.' ...this is an amazing song with loads of different possible interpretations :)

General Comment:i feel like i relate to this song a lot. ive been talking to a girl for a while and i was looking to go towards dating in the near future. but since i am going to the marines this summer she doesnt want a guy that wont be around

Looking for something I've never seen
    Alone and I'm in between
The place that I'm from and
    The place that I'm in
    A city I never been

i kinda see this as shes unlike other girls that ive talked to or been with. shes different from other girls but i wanted someone like this

I found a friend or should I say foe
Said there's a few things you should know
We don't want you to see
    We come and we go
    Here today, gone tomorrow

i thought she was someone that i could be with but when she told me that it wouldnt work she turned into a foe. after she said that i told her that i couldnt be around her anymore, the feeling of being just friends would be too overwhelming and i would never lose the attachment.

    Were only taking turns
    Holding this world
    It's how it's always been
When you're older, you will understand

when we talked she was the one that really controlled where we went and what would happen. but after i cut ties i relate that to me holding the world and thats what i always do. im either all in or i fold. i dont think shes taking it well but maybe later she'll understand

If I say who I know it just goes to show
You need me less than I need you

i would have been okay with being away from her but she didnt feel that strong to stay together

    Take it from me
    We don't give sympathy
You can trust me trust nobody

im not really looking for her to feel bad that she hurt my feelings and im certainly not going to feel bad for her. and it just shows, when you think you have something it fails, again

But I said you and me
    We don't have honesty
The things we don't want to speak

since we were never officially together ive done things with other people and shes admitted to a few small things. we never really talked about it though

I'll try to get out but I never will
    Traffic is perfectly still

i try to find a relationship that will work but nothing ever does, i feel like im stuck being single

not everyone will feel the same about the song but i feel this is how i relate and the song really speaks to me

My Interpretation:In my opinion, I see the first verse as a guy who used to want so much in his life but never ended up doing so because he fell into a cliche life where its the same thing every day. He feels depressed about this, and feels like no one would understand if he told them. The guy meets someone who's interested in him, but he immediately tells her that people like him come and go. So by saying this, he's not really sure if she'll become a friend or a foe.

Chorus just seems to be him talking to himself, pretending to tell the world, almost as if to give up ("Its how its always been").

Second verse the guy is in a relationship where they always seem to be fighting, and he tells her to trust him even though he isn't trustworthy ("you can trust me, trust nobody"). Maybe he cheated on her with the girl in the first verse? They don't want to speak the truth about what's happening to them, but they're stuck.

The very last chorus shows more uncertainty then the rest (the word "might" is used suddenly instead of "will") so perhaps he's reflecting on his relationship and other relationships he's had, and realized that not everyone will come to understand the world.

General Comment:"We're only taking turns, holding this world"
I feel like this is from the perspective of a mother and a father, the world referring to their child, who, is simply the "world" to them. The song as a whole seems like an explanation of difficult concepts to a young child, perhaps a divorce (that's what came to mind for me)

My Interpretation:I see this song as someone speaking to a child, or someone younger and teaching them about life and the world, probably a parent figure speaking to a child 'When you're older you will understand'.

I feel the lines 'If I say who I know it just goes to show; You need me less than I need you' reflect how even though the child may feel as though they need their parent more, they don't because unlike in the future they'll have to live without their parent, yet their parent could never live without them.

The song shows us how the world is full of uncertainty, reflected through the lyrics 'when you're older you will understand' which then change to 'when you're older you might understand'

I think that the song may be telling us that we aren't always going to be happy :'We're only taking turns holding this world', but we should always savour our happiness rather than let ourselves fall into a state that we can't break free from I'll try to get out but I never will Traffic is perfectly still'

That's just how I see the song, but the amazing thing about any type of literature (lyrics included) can be interpreted differently by everyone :) I always get an image of a child holding a dandelion and blowing it while a parent watches when I hear the line 'We're only taking turns holding this world'
