There are certain people you just keep coming back to
She is right in front of you
You begin to wonder, could you find a better one
Compared to her, now she's in question

And all at once the crowd begins to sing
Sometimes the hardest thing and the right thing are the same

Maybe you want her, maybe you need her
Maybe you started to compare to someone not there

Looking for the right one, you line up the world to find
Where no questions cross your mind
But she won't keep on waiting for you without a doubt
Much longer for you to sort it out

And all at once the crowd begins to sing
Sometimes the hardest thing and the right thing are the same

Maybe you want her, maybe you need her
Maybe you started to compare to someone not there
Maybe you want it, maybe you need it
Maybe it's all you're running from
Perfection will not come

And all at once the crowd begins to sing
Sometimes
We'd never know what's wrong without the pain
Sometimes the hardest thing and the right thing are the same

Maybe you want her, maybe you need her
Maybe you've started to compare to someone not there
Maybe you want it, maybe you need it
Maybe it's all you're running from
Perfection will not come

Maybe you want her, maybe you need her
Maybe you had her, maybe you lost her to another
To another

My Interpretation:This is a fantastic song and the fact that it is interpretated in so many different ways is testament to that.
My interpretation is more along the lines of it being about a man who is struggling with the insecurities that a new relationship can bring and he wants re-assurance from others (he wants the crowd to sing) that his thinking in that she loves and wants you too is right.
There are certain people you just keep coming back to - I think he is referring back to himself and he really wants the crowd to sing - it's her, she loves you too, go for it, don't think about past relationships she's had
He knows his insecurities are there and that's why he accepts that the crowd won't say that hence the hardest things and the right things are the same - he knows that the right thing to do is go for it and get the girl and he probably knows that she is the right one for him but the insecurities make it the hardest thing for him to do.
The inner turmoil goes on with Maybe you want her, maybe you need her
Maybe you started to compare to someone not there - he is having these doubts and trying to convince himself that he does want and need her and the someone not there being an ex husband or boyfriend she has had that he is comparing himself to and wonders how he'll measure up.

Looking for the right one, you line up the world to find
Where no questions cross your mind - he is looking for someone, could be this one, where he doesn't have these insecurities so no questions of being hurt or rejected will come
But she won't keep on waiting for you without a doubt
Much longer for you to sort it out - I think he also wants the crowd to sing these two lines to help him get her, basically if you don't go for her she'll think your not interested and then she'll go and you'll lose her so go on and get her.

And then he is hit with the reality with the brilliant change in lyrics from want and need to had and lost but lost her to another the other being another dose of insecurities not another person.

Maybe you want her, maybe you need her
Maybe you had her, maybe you lost her to another

    Brilliant song, brilliant lyrics

My Interpretation:O.K, Well I guess Im taking rather a different approach, but as I was trying to find some inspriration for a creative writng piece in the HSC, this song came to mind, and I used the lyrics "All at once the crowd begins to sing, sometimes the hardest thing and the right thing are the same" as though they were talking about society, meaning that while at times it is hard to conform to society, I guess its the right thing to do as well, the line "Looking for the right one, you line up the world to find, let no questions cross your mind" I took that as though, you literally line up with the world to find 'The One' and you dont even question it, because its what everybody else does, and if you do question the needs of society, or the way in which it works, you almost instantly become an outcast. I also used the Line "Perfection will not come, continuously throughout the story, because its one of those things that you hear, and then think "Oh yeah, Subconciously I knew that, but to actually see it written it creates impact" so basically what Im saying is that its a song about love, obviously, though I think it of it as though its a love that follows the rules, there doing everything that there meant to do, because thats what society wants.

General Comment:maybe I'm just projecting, but I think it's about looking back with rose-colored glasses, it wasn't that great back then but you chase that nostalgia that twisted the past into something so beautiful. About not moving on to live the life you could possibly have and grasping at a past that never existed in the first place

General Comment:I'm going through a situation right now in my life, and every line in this song just makes perfect sense to me and has helped me so much.

I agree with waitingonyou for the most part, except i think the line "We'd never know whats wrong without the pain, sometimes the hardest thing are the right thing are the same" is about realizing that you've skrewed this person over so many times by going out with other people and being indecisive, and during that time they found someone else, that you need to let them go (even if its extremely hard to do), because it's the right thing and you want to see that person happy.

I don't think this song ends with the person getting the one they keep going back to, I think it's that he waited too long and lost her, and then starts feeling the pain when she moves on, but the pain helps him realize what he's being doing wrong.

    My Interpretation:My interpretation of this song is really clear to me, just because it fitted my ex-boyfriend so perfectly. This is a song that you can fit into a lot of meanings, but, based on my ex, this is mine;

    - like my ex and I they keep breaking up because on or both of them want to end it, but they always end up back together or in eachothers lives, like my ex and I. ('there are certain people you just keep coming back to') but going back and kind of giving up your dignity is both 'the hardest thing and the right thing'

    - after breaking up, he moves on and finds other girls and it all seems so great, but in the end you always end up comparing them back to the first girl 'compared to her, now she's in question' - even the new girls that seem great always end up being compared back to the ex ('maybe you've started to compare to someone not there')

    - a lot of people that know my ex share the idea that he seems to just be looking for a relationship that is so perfect that he doesn't ever start to doubt it, even though that might be an unlikely idea since we're still so young. Because he's always swung from person to person, and I still remain the only relationship where he stuck around. But he still went back to his old ways eventually and left me, although he came back with his tail between his legs after a few weeks when he'd been with somebody else, and then I had to leave him again because he wasn't ready to commit to me quite yet when there were other girls that liked him, and I refused to be an option whilst he was treating me like his girlfriend whilst also trying to find out if any of them were better than me. ('maybe it's all you're running from, perfection will not come')

    - 'You line up the world to find, the one where no questions cross your mind' - also fits with the bit about perfection above. Like my ex boyfriend got into a relationship with someone else and kept it as secret as possible, even things like not putting it on facebook, and denied it to me when I told him I knew, even though we weren't together at this point. And now we've broken up again, when you actually know the full extent he puts it about... it's like he's auditioning girls, trying to find the perfect relationship. And he ends up going back to his exes, it's not a new thing. He did it to a girlfriend a year before me, but she never took him back. Like he keeps trying new relationships then comparing them to and going back to girls from the past.

    - I believe that the guy was the one that left her in the relationship, since it talks about running from her and how she won't wait for him to 'sort it out'. And he keeps going back to her, he keeps realising that he isn't going to find anyone better than her, but it's probably too late now 'maybe you want her, maybe you need her, maybe you lost her to another'

I do feel like my old relationship was the type that this song is about because the lyrics just match everything so ridiculously perfectly

Memory:Holy crap, I wish that one person I'm thinking about could check this song out.
So, here this song describes my situation but in the point of view of the girl in this. He goes everywhere looking for girls that could be ''better'' than me in some way, but ends up coming back to me at the end, but I'm getting tired of it, and maybe I'm starting to like someone else...
Maybe you want her, maybe you need her,
maybe you started to compare to someone not there,
maybe you want it, maybe you need it,
maybe it's all you're running from
    perfection will not come

    Maybe you want her
    Maybe you need her
    Maybe you had her
Maybe you lost her to another...

So freaking true. I love this song so much! Especially 'And all at once the crowd begins to sing, sometimes the hardest thing and the right thing are the same...'

General Comment:To me, this song is about making decisions, and that sometimes the hardest thing you could do is also what is right.

My Interpretation:for me..I guess this means...that the guy is in a "new" relationship..dating this girl he knows for a long time who's been there for him always..but there's this problem..he was just not sure that she is the one for him..for me the reason why he is not sure is because he still hasn't moved on from the previous relationship he had..for him, the past relationship was somehow greater than the present (or he was just madly in love with his ex)..so he keeps trying to compare the ex-girlfriend to his present..or trying to compare his girlfriend to "someone not there" anymore..I guess he's been dumped or just fall for someone who doesn't really love him and now that he found a new one..even though how great this new girl is..his heart still belongs to someone who's already been gone..when the crowd says.."sometimes the hardest thing and the right thing are the same"..means, he should let go of the past, moved on with his life and just love this girl that he is with now..but then before he realized that he should give his full love and attention to this new girl..she was already gone..she got tired of waiting..until she finds another man who can love her truly..and now the guy lost both women he loved...the lesson here..DON'T BE STUPID. DON'T HOLD ON TO SOMEONE WHO'S NOT THERE ANYMORE..because If you keep looking back you might lose what's in front of you....(this explanation has been very personal to me.LOL) :D

My Interpretation:This song is very personal to me. I listened to this song after a whole year of liking this girl. We flirted constantly and she even told me she liked me but I never did anything about it. I bought the album for christmas and sat down and listened to it. This song struck me straight away. To me it's about doubting whether you like a girl or not. You keep questioning and from the questioning you lose her. "Maybe you lost her to another". That line gets me every time. Coz that's how I felt. I felt like she was mine but I screwed it up and lost her to someone else.

General Comment:This is a great song and you guys are right on with your interpretation. I know the song is supposed to be about a girl, but some of the lyrics can apply to anything in life. The hardest thing and the right thing are often the same. I especially like the line, "we never know whats wrong without the pain" because it means that we have to mess up and then do the right thing.
