This was the first Him song I ever heard on the radio. At first I just listened. I didn't really get it. But to me it's like, inorder to have love I have to give up something aswell... Like a butterfly all they have is there wings... it is what makes them beautiful... makes them fly... I guess sometimes I feel like I was a butterfly, but I had my wings ripped out just so I could have love...

I highly doubt this is at all what it's talking about, but the lyrics very much so make me think of muslim extremists; addresing their own perspectives on what they do, and then the reality of their actions. Re-read the lyrics again with that thought in mind and see what you think. Like I said, I don't really think that's what they're talking about, but it's a good fit I believe.

Pysche becomes immortal after Jupiter hears Cupid's request for help and talks Venus into forgetting her jealously of Pysche's beauty. A classical, probably Renaissance, picture I saw of Psyche and Cupid dipicted the woman with butterfly wings, after she had become immortal. Rip off the wings of a butterfly means gain your immortality.

I can't dig through the artist's associations. I'd have to be him (and probably high) to tell you what most of the lines mean. However, I think the narrator is Cupid.
"heaven ablaze in our eyes" = Venus was pissed because she envied Psyche's beauty while Cupid loved her.
"Come on and show them [the gods] your love" = Psyche later seeks out Venus, and Venus forces Psyche to complete these trials in order to mollify her jealousy. Maybe this line refers to Pysche's struggle to show the gods her love for Cupid, which ultimately leads to Jupiter endowing her with immortality.

Finally, showing the gods her love required her to overcome her status quo, put the past behind her, and commit herself to Cupid. The whole drugged out song is probably about making the commitment to get closer to a love.

... and I doubt the artist is a satanist. He manufactures that image -- I'm sure -- in order to cater to a certain fanbase.

What about this interpretation?

It is a really dark song full of bitterness. A butterfly looks beautiful, but wihtout wings it is nothing but a grey worm (kind of).

She might seem good to others.. but the truth is that she is not what is looks like. He asks her to show the true nature of herself (her love) by removing the good looking surface..

The Video is amazing. Its not to dark or anything. This song is about. Two lovers who one of them lovers the other a lot more then the other. And so lets say the girl lover the guy a lot more then he lovers her. He wants her to do all of this stuff for her, and ask for something that she can't get back, probley, sex. So he wants her to show him her love him and Rip the wings off a butterfly, or meaning doing something that she would never do. WHAT

To me this song says that usually when we love someone or something we cage it or clip it's wings to keep it close to us, in essense "show them your love, rip out the wings of a butterfly..." is a commentary on what we do to the things we love for our own piece of mind, and forgetting that one of the things that made something beautiful in the first place was it's wild and free nature.

I think this means (to me anyway) that someone is going out with someone who is innocent, and that the other person knows that the relationship is hurting them but who cares cause the other person makes them feel good again.

You can say anything you want about the interpretation of the song, but the factual basis and inspiration for the song may have come from the experiences of famous actress Natalie Wood. As a child star, her parents were very abusive and pushed her into fame. In one specific incidence, Wood's mother wanted her to cry on-camera, and she could not do so. So, in order to get the tears flowing, she would keep a butterfly in a jar on the set and tear off its wings to get Natalie to cry. Additionally, Wood said that anytime she saw the wings ripped off of a butterfly, her tears came directly "from the soul."

Take it anyway you want, but I think it's pretty likely this song was inspired by that.

I don't know why, but I think it's showing people only the good parts in a relationship/showing off.

I also think it's about doing something bad to save yourself.

This song has been in my top ten for a year. The riffs keeps pulling me back to hear it.

Christ, some of you people are just unreal. God forbid that an artist finds a way to make himself marketable AND be able to convay what is in his heart.

I suggest you start living in the real world and realize what it costs to make albums.

On another note, I love this song, Good song, i have just recently started listening to H.I.M cause of this song and a few others i have heard while listening to Yahoo music engine. Great rifts and in the lyrics i think it is about the destruction of beauty for your own personal gain.

I love this song, because it just has... another kind of melody. It puts me in another place to hear the different pitches and all that... I also like how the guitars are heavy, but the song is still melodic. As for the lyrics, I don't know what to take of it, but everyone seems to have their own idea.
