Less of a singer, you are more
More of a prostitute
With aspirations for a life of sex and drug abuse
When did the music turn into a beauty pageant
Lately my sense of pride has been chronically absent domesticate
So much for combat
My worst habits are mounting a comback
Dollars and pence, cubic or metric
You can sit down but the chairs are electric
Lay in the street, embrace the gutter
It's easier than working towards something
Better pull on my boots, run through the back door
Should have been more careful what I wished for
Less of an artist, you are more
More of a xerox machine
You sit tracing the pages of juxtapoz magazine
When did the music turn into a beauty pageant
I've become a participant in something I once stood against
I should have never given birth to this monster
From all this same I'd like to hide my head in the ground

My Interpretation:I dont think this song has to do with Ben at all. It's simply about the music industry and how every new artist is just for show. (When did the music become a beauty pagaent)

(Lately my sense of pride has been chronically absent) This is him saying he has given in to the industry and has produced music THEY wanted, not what he wanted. This is the basis for the line (Should have never given birth to this monster)

Then he screams "Domesticate!" To domesticate something is to tame it. By domesticate he is talking about the industry taking away the art of music and making everyone the same (a beauty pagaent). When he says "so much for combat" hes saying "so much for me sticking to my guns and producing the music HE wanted. Hence the line "Ive become a participant of something i once fought against."

The most confusing line is "Dollars and pence. Cubic or metric. You can sit down but the chairs are electric." I think what he is saying is... you can "sit down" and sign that big contract to that big label and produce ur generic music but in the end, its going to burn you.

In the last line he says "for all this same, id like to hide my head in the ground". by "all this same" once again he is talking about all the music being the same. and he wants to hide his head because he too fell victim to the industry.

General Comment:This seems to be the realization of what becoming famous does to you
You're selling your talent (less of a singer you are more of a prostitute)(when did the music turn into a beauty pageant?)
Everything you're getting yourself into.. all the drugs and sex
That point when you realize that it doesn't mean as much to you now that you're not trying so hard
(should have been more careful what I wished for)
No matter what you do there will be a downfall and in the end you'll wish you never "given birth to this monster"

General Comment:Well regardless of what the artist intended it to be about...this song completely describes

    'scene kids' to me.

"Less of an artist, you are more
    More of a xerox machine
You sit tracing the pages of juxtapoz magazine
When did the music turn into a beauty pageant"

Most are holier then thou, self absorbed, vain, and obnoxious, and they don't listen to bands for the artistic merit...rather ~street cred~

General Comment:Um, the xerox machine means the "artist" can't produce anything original of his or her own.

I just thought this was about pretentious artists in general, those in it just for money with no real talent. But people are saying it's about Ben, or Melanie? o_o

General Comment:What i got from this song is that because the drummer (now singer) had to write the lyrics in about one day becasue the old singer left just befor they started to record this is his way of telling him off. It shows the emotions the drummer had at the time and that he was not happy with the singer. look at the lines it says "less of a singer you are more..."
