Lyrics for I'll Believe in Anything as interpreted by FuneralCatering

I'll Believe in Anything Lyrics
Give me your eyes
I need sunshine
Give me your eyes
I need sunshine
Your blood, your bones
Your voice, and your ghost

We've both been very brave
Walk around with both legs
Wait for the scary day
We both pull the tricks out of our sleeves

But I'll believe in anything
And you'll believe in anything
Said I'll believe in anything
And you'll believe in anything

If I could take the fire out from the wire
I'd share a life and you'd share a life
If I could take the fire out from the wire
I'd share a life and you'd share a life
If I could take the fire out from the wire
I'd take you where nobody knows you
And nobody gives a damn
Said nobody knows you
And nobody gives a damn

And I could take another hit for you
And I could take away your trips from you
And I could take away the salt from your eyes
And take away the spitting salt in you
And I could give you my apologies
By handing over my neologies
And I could take away the shaking knees
And I could give you all the olive trees
Oh look at the trees and look at my face
And look at a place far away from here

So give me your eyes
I need sunshine
Give me your eyes
I need sunshine
Your blood, your bones
Your voice, and your ghost

We've both been very brave
Walk around with both legs
Wait for the scary day
We both pull the tricks out of our sleeves

But I'll believe in anything
And you'll believe in anything

If I could take the fire out from the wire
I'd share a life and you'd share a life
If I could take the fire out from the wire
I'd share a life and you'd share a life
If I could take the fire out from the wire
I'd take you where nobody knows you
And nobody gives a damn
I said nobody knows you
And nobody gives a damn

I said nobody knows you
And nobody gives a damn either way
About your blood, your bones
Your voice, and your ghost
Because nobody knows you
And nobody gives a damn either way

And now I'll believe in anything
You'll believe in anything
Because nobody knows you
And nobody gives a damn anyway

I hadn’t thought about it that way, but I think archemist has a good notion about the song being sung from the point of view of one heroin addict to another, although I think the other addict may be sick or dying (maybe HIV or AIDS transmitted through needles?) This could explain the shift in the last verse.

“If I could take the fire out from the wire
I'd take you where nobody knows you
And nobody gives a damn…
…About your blood
your bones
your voice
and ghost
because nobody knows you
and nobody gives a damn either way”

He goes from wanting to share a life with her, needing her blood, bones, voice, ghost, to instead making that the reason he’d like to take her away.. where no one knows, and therefore cares about the illness (her blood and bones) and the stigma it has.

It’s always sort of bothered me at the end, that it seems like such an earnest love song, but all of the sudden he wants to whisk his love object off to somewhere no one gives a shit about her. Seems to make a little more sense this way, and enforce the sentiment of the rest.

Just a thought…

Regardless, this is my favorite on the album.

i just heard this song and it's not bad. this is the first time i've listened to this kind of music so i really don't know how to interpret this song, but the points that thelorax and spime-vimes seem to make sense. i just wonder if he's actually with this gurl or it's somebody that he wants really bad and can't really have right now

'And I could take another hit for you
And I could take away your trips from you
And I could take away the salt from your eyes
And take away the spitting salt in you'

I always heard that last pair of lines saying...

'And I could take away the salt from your eyes
And take away what's been assaulting you'

..and y'know, even now when I go back and listen to it again, I still hear it that way.

To be honest, I even like it better than the other interpretations. It's a clever little play on words stuck in the middle of this crucial moment musically and lyrically for the song. Krug does that sort of thing a lot, mixing puns or turns of phrase that are almost goofy within his more intense imagery.

not necessarily online relationship, but a very strong long-distance relationship. not being sure if it's going to last for much longer, but not wanting to give it all up, because it means so fucking much.

Just discovered this song, it's amazing.
I'm 100% sure he says 'Take away what's been assaulting you' not 'the spitting salt in you'. fits with buddy's drug addiction interpretation too.
the neologies/ideologies, i dunno.

It is interesting to me that others have yet to comment on the 'religiousness' of this song. I don't believe this to be a love song, a song about a relationship, nor a song about a drug problem; it's about religion.

This song is obviously loaded with meaning so I'll only comment on what I believe to be the most obvious refference to religion:
to me, "your blood, your bones, your voice, and your ghost" is a refference to Christ. Blood and bones (like in communion), voice (as in teachings and personal guidance), and ghost (as in Holy Ghost).

In our world of individualism and materialism, this song cries about how people are thirsting so badly for something, anything to hold on to and believe in. In short, this song is saying that this thirst has become so strong in today's society that, at this point, "I'll believe in anything."

It is unclear (to me) the stance this song takes on religion (whether we should believe in It or not), but i do believe this song is about religion. And, in my experience, His Eyes really do bring The Sunshine.

And I could take another hit for you
And I could take away your trips from you

This seems to be referencing some kind of drug, but for me the drug reference is largely metaphorical-as if it is the society that is keeping them sadated and detatched from there desires--especially the desire to leave and be free of it all together. Feels like Roussouian love song to me...

If What I've Read about msot wolf parade songs and heard, is that it seems to have to do with wanting things being back to nature and human civilization dieing out because of technology, When He Says' "if i could take the fire out from the wire i'd share a life and you'd share a life" i think it means that if he could take technology in general and ispose of it everyone could be nature and be ok to say anything without it being publiszed much so u could share your life with somone

i never thought about the heroin thing but that makes a lot of sense. it's a fundamentally happy song to me, or at least self-affirming. an recovering addict saying it makes sense cause it's like the feeling you've been hurting yourself for a long time and now you're acknowledging that you deserve good things. it's kind of magical to see people realize they need to stop hurting themselves and the song has a magical quality to me.

Wow, Tinydancer take that shit back to the pulpit this aint sunday school.

"We've both been very brave
Walk around with both legs
Wait for the scary day
We both pull the tricks out of our sleeves"

"I'd take you where nobody knows you
And nobody gives a damn
Said nobody knows you
And nobody gives a damn"

Try to apply these lines to your "Jesus" theory and it falls apart like so much wet toliet paper. So hes taking Jesus somewhere where no on gives damn? Sound like a fun religion.

This song is definitely about a loved one in a bad situation, not sure if its drugs or if shes in some other bad situation. But one thing I AM sure of, and thats that it isnt about Jesus!

It doesn't fall apart with those lines. On the contrary, I think these lines make my view of the song more clear. Perhaps he's not talking to 'Jesus' but someone like a missionary. (Both him and the missionary are brave and walk the earth, await (or ‘fight’ as I’ve seen on other lyric sites) the end of the scary day (end of the world?), and both pull tricks out of their sleeves). It makes perfect sense.

Jesus is just as much for the Christian as He is for those who are not (if not more so). So to "take you where nobody knows you and nobody gives a damn" might be talking about trying to bring Christ to those who have yet to see. Or it’s just plain talking about how, in general, modern society doesn’t give a damn about religion.

And to clarify; I don't think the song is about Jesus. I think it's about religion in a general societal context. Wolf Parade's album is thick with meaning and includes waves of social as well as metaphysical angst. The lyrics are hard to comprehend and obviously have a strong meaning to the writer. I don’t think it’s too hard to think that they wrote a song about religion and its place in today’s society. So I'm just offering another perspective that's not as obvious (and cliché) as a love song.

I have to agree with the person who said it's a really ott love song. The way he sings it it sounds like he's got so much to say that he barely fit it all into the song, like the repetition "And I could take..." etc. Like he doesn't ever care that it's got no grace he just needs to say it all realllyyyy fast.

Like he's trying to convince someone of something?

i dunno, but i love it.

The lead singer's imagination is incredible, never heard of such lyrics. I really can't say what the song means, but the tone of his voice sounds eery and desperate. Not to underestimate its a passionate song.

Here follows a long, convoluted and tenuous explanation:

It doesn't really fit into the whole naturalistic ideology that seems to be a theme with the album but I think the line 'If I could take the fire out from the wire' could be about gossip.

There's a girl who has a past, and it's catching up/caught up with her and now she has to live with everyone around her knowing. The fire in the wire is the phone line which people use to gossip and bitch about her to each other. And if he could just stop people persecuting her then they'd be happy.

'We've both been very brave
Walk around with both legs
Wait for the scary day
We both pull the tricks out of our sleeves'

They both knew the day would come when people would find out, but they just tried to carry on as normal. They had vague plans of what to do if the day came but they were superficial and fleeting, not really a solution.

He's been trying to shield her from it all, by taking her eyes, her blood/bones etc away, by keeping her close/averting her attention or whatever.

'But I'll believe in anything
And you'll believe in anything'

He doesn't care about her past, he'll accept anything she tells him about it, even if it's a lie. And hopefully she'll believe it eventually too.

'And I could take another hit for you....'

He'll help her face it/stick it out with her until it gets better.

'I'd take you where nobody knows you
And nobody gives a damn'

They'll start another life together where nobody knows about her/what she's done.

Doesn't have to be about a girl/it could be a boy or a friend/family member or whatever.

Anyways, whatever it's about, it's a brilliant song, I listen to it way too much :)

An absolutely beautiful song. I've started listening it in repeat after reading your comments.
I have a feeling that he sings this instead:

"And I could take away the salt from your eyes
and take away the dripping salt in your wound"

Also, I like someone elses comment about this song being an online or long distance relationship. Maybe he met her online chatting and they fell in love, but they know they can't be together.

He doesn't know what she looks like but wants to see her physically, hear her voice, touch her soul.

He wishes he can pull the love formed between them online from the internet wire.

When you're chatting online, you'll probably believe anything that's being chatted about because nobody knows you and nobody gives a damn.

People if you listen to the lyrics closely and read what the lyrics say above they seem correct. I'm not saying I know the lyrics for sure but if you actually listen closely its pretty easy to figure out what he is saying.

As for the meaning, I definitly have to agree with the interpretations that have already been made saying its about deep, sometimes naive affection. The images of the olive tree and the line

"I'd take you where nobody knows you
And nobody gives a damn"

definitly makes his feelings feel pure and peaceful. And the whole

"And I could take another hit for you
And I could take away your trips from you
And I could take away the salt from your eyes
And take away the spitting salt in you
And I could give you my apologies
By handing over my neologies
And I could take away the shaking knees
And I could give you all the olive trees
Oh look at the trees and look at my face
And look at a place far away from here"

sequence is amazing!! This song is full of energy and emotion. It does seem like there is something that has come in between him and the person who the song is for, and he is willing to do anything to be able to get away from these problems and live a peaceful life.

According to Dan Boeckner, Spencer writes his songs from the point of view of a character. In this case, he writes it from the view of a twelve year old girl.

I keep thinking about it, and I can't see what he sees. Spencer is one crazy guy.

The references to hits and trips convince me that archemist1 is right, that the song might have something to do with drug addiction, or with some mental/emotional dependence mediated through the theme of drug addiction. Yes, the lines "If I could take the fire out from the wire/ I'd share a life and you'd share a life" suggests that quitting would allow them to maintain healthy, meaningful lives and relationships. The two people in the song "wait for the scary day/ we both pull the tricks out of our sleeves," or the day they make the decision to quit.

I like how one can understand the first line of the song only after listening to the fifth stanza: the request for the other's eyes is a rephrasing of the appeal to "look at the trees and look at my face/ And look at a place far away from here."

Finally: stop assuming the other person is a female that the first person is in love with.
