Lyrics for This Heart's on Fire as interpreted by FuneralCatering

This Heart's on Fire Lyrics
Sometimes they rock and roll
Sometimes they stay at home and it's just fine
This heart's on fire
This heart's on fire
This heart's on fire
This heart's on fire

I am my mother's hen
and left the body in the bed all day
We don't know what to do
This heart's on fire
This heart's on fire
This heart's on fire
This heart's on fire

A thousand made-up loves
What makes the sound of surf once you know you're alive?
This heart's on fire
This heart's on fire
This heart's on fire
This heart's on fire

It's getting better all the time
It's getting better all the time
This heart's on fire
This heart's on fire
This heart's on fire
This heart's on fire

And you're my favourite thing
tell it everywhere I go
I don't know what to do
This heart's on fire
This heart's on fire
This heart's on fire
This heart's on fire

Sometimes they rock and roll
I'd rather stay at home in real life
This heart's on fire
This heart's on fire
This heart's on fire
This heart's on fire

It's getting better all the time
It's getting better all the time
It's getting better all the time
It's getting better all the time

This heart's on fire
This heart's on fire
This heart's on fire
This heart's on fire
This heart's on fire
This heart's on fire
This heart's on fire
This heart's on fire

Brilliant closer of a fantastic album. Judging from the lyrics you could say it's a bit dull but that's definitely not the case. This song sounds very emotional, and I think the meaning of it is obvious. :)

Sounds a lot like Wilco. In fact, for the most part I think half ths songs sound like Modest Mouse and the other half sound like Wilco. Great band, great cd, probably the best this year.

The posted lyrics "sometimes they rock and roll/
sometimes they stay at home and it's just fine"...I thought they were "sometimes WE rock and roll/
sometimes WE stay at home and it's just fine" and "sometimes they rock and roll/
I'd rather stay at home in real life"...I thought they were "sometimes WE rock and roll/I'd rather stay at home AND FEEL ALIVE"...I hope the lyrics as I heard them are the actual lyrics, because I think they're more personal. I think this song is about someone who is depressed and broken hearted and would rather stay home and pine about their lost love than go out and look for someone else. Someone who cannot let go of that lost love.

I am pretty much certain this is a break up song about getting over someone. In fact, I think that's who "Queen Mary" is, the person that the writer is trying to bury with words. The lines are too obvious:
"and you're my favorite thing,
I tell it everywhere I go
I don't know what to do.."

"it's getting better all the time"

That's right, it does get better all the time...

Actually, the Queen Mary is a boat they were at a party on and they pretty much trashed it.

I like the perhaps beatles reference with "it's getting better all the time" is too close to "Getting Better" to be coinicidental.

I agree with u, kozmik.

And the lines "this heart's on fire" don't get out of my mind.

I agree with papel, It definitly sounds like "I'd rather stay at home and FEEL ALIVE"

I also certainly makes sense it being about someone stuck in a depressed funk who doesnt really want to go out and do anything.

r u guys serious? u really think this is a sad song about someone depressed or a break-up? it seem pretty obvious that it's a happy song. he's so happy with the one he loves(his wife im guessing) that he wants to do nothing else but be at home with her.
"And you're my favourite thing"
"It's getting better all the time"
"Once you know you're alive"
"I'd rather stay at home in real life"
"This heart's on fire"

cmon guys.

what i have always heard it as, and what i have read on other websites is "i am my mother's hand". this makes slightly more sense to me for two reasons. first, it makes more sense with regards to the following line about leaving the body in the bed all day. second, hen's are female, and thus mr. boeckner singing about being a hen doesn't seem reasonable. either way the meaning isn't explicit so who knows. wonderful song though. perhaps my favorite on the album.

boeckner said it's a song dedicated to his girlfriend for being supportive of him when his mother died.

hence, "...and left the body in the bed all day/we don't know what to do."

i believe the correct lyric is "I am my mother's hand."

At a Metro concert I went to Boeckner said before starting this song, "This song is about my mother.... who died..... Three years ago.... today...." It framed the song in this terrible sad yet hopeful way.... and then they proceeded to letaway a killer performance of it.

Yeah, this songs about his mother who died. She was a very loved dance teacher and it was a tradgedy in Lake Cowichan where Dan's from.

Amazing song.

Yes it's about his mother who died. Listen up: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWR8bTp-UV8

It's obviously not "I am my mother's hen", it's:
"I kissed my mother's hand
and left the body in the bed all day
We don't know what to do..." :(

You got some other parts of the lyrics wrong but I can't get them right either, so let's leave it as it is. I'd appreciate if someone'd change the upper verse, though.

it's definitely "sometimes WE rock and roll" in both verses, "i HELD my mother's HAND" (makes sense as she was dying) and "i'd rather stay at home AND FEEL ALIVE"

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the contrast of the line "I am my mother's hen" in this song, the last of the album, to the line "I am my father's son" in the first song. The two songs display very different attitudes about the singer's parents. Could it also signify a general direction the album moves in?

I agree that the lyrics that are posted above are incorrect. If you listen to the song, you can tell. They should fix that. Either way, I love the song.

it does indeed sound 1/2 wilco 1/2 modest, and in addition to the beatles' 'getting better' i'd like to add 'this wheel's on fire' by the band as another possible reference
