He's a stranger to some
And a vision to none
He can never get enough
Get enough of the one

For a fortune he'd quit
But it's hard to admit
How it ends and begins
On his face is a map of the world
(A map of the world)
On his face is a map of the world
(A map of the world)

From yesterday, it's coming
From yesterday, the fear
From yesterday, it calls him
But he doesn't want to read the message here

On a mountain he sits
Not of gold but of shit
Through the blood he can look
See the lives that he took
From a council of one
He'll decide when he's done with the innocent
On his face is a map of the world
(A map of the world)
On his face is a map of the world
(A map of the world)

From yesterday, it's coming
From yesterday, the fear
From yesterday, it calls him
But he doesn't want to read the message
(But he doesn't want to read the message)
Doesn't want to read the message here!

On his face is a map of the world

From yesterday, it's coming!
From yesterday, the fear!
From yesterday, it calls him
But he doesn't want to read the message here
From yesterday
From yesterday
From yesterday, the fear
From yesterday
From yesterday
But he doesn't want to read the message
(But he doesn't want to read the message)
He doesn't want to read the message here!

General Comment:I'm pretty sure this song is about fear itself - Jared says it in the lyrics. "He's a stranger to some but a vision to none" - not everyone has fear, but no one can see it. "Through the blood he can look, see the lives that he took" - others have died of or in fear. "On his face is a map of the world" - fear is all over the world, it affects everyone. It seems like a good guess...

General Comment:In some ways this song seems very spiritual. Could be about the devil himself or a devilish man who lives to take the lives of the innocent. But, now he sits at the end of his life on this mountain (he assumed would be a mountain of gold ... that his life would bring great reward somehow, but is reduced to a mountain of sin or "shit" as I've seen it written elsewhere). The map of the world could be the desire to dominate. But, from yesterday or from the past he'll reap what he's done. It's all going to come back on him, but he keeps refusing the read the writing on the wall ("he doesn't wanna read the message here"). If you really take it spiritually, the words "through the blood" could almost be the blood Jesus shed to break the power of the devil. (I'm sure that's not it, but it kind of fits). Through this blood he can learn his own fate ... almost like there could be hope for him if he turns from the council of one (his own council). But, "he'll decide when he's done with the innocent" and then it goes on to the lyrics ("on his face is a map of the world"). It's like he's set on taking on this world. Anyway ... that's kind of how it hits me. Seems obvious there's a lot of conflict going on inside whoever this is about. His or her past seems to be catching up and the results of hisliving he doesn't seem to want to look at.

General Comment:I really don't care what their website says. I hate to say it but what the music companies/fans put down isn't always what the artists sing.
Also a buddy of mine is MI (military intelligence; oxymoronic I know) but they used a voice scrubber on the song and a voice spectral analyzer to determine the lyrics and he definintely says "sin." Sides if you believe what you read all the time and keep thumping that line, you sir, are an idiot.

General Comment: Its not shit its sin. Its not about a soldier. I am a soldier. I have seen real fighting and real combat. Most soldiers do not care for it, though we live in the moment, we live to survive. So if anyone thinks that most soldiers enjoy it you are a fool.
The song is simply about a person who was so wrapped up in enjoying life (carnal pleasures, etc.) that he can't see that it leaves a gaping hole in his life. He doesn't realize the negative karma he has accrued (or maybe doesn't care) and the messes he leaves. Think about this: a person who lives in the moment and does drugs, sleeps around (with/without a condom) and appreciates all sorts of red delights including fighting just to fight and hurting people to get what he wants or it could be about the businessman that accrues wealth and steps on anyone in his path to get what he thinks he deserves in this world. Simply put, its about one who puts his desires ahead of others not caring who they hurt to get them. The meaning behind the refrain is simple too: Its coming, The fear, It calls him but he does want to read the message here - Its obviously a reference to the fact that his conscience is kicking in but he refuses to see what it means; a hole in his life that he can't fill but will continue to fill with "stuff" in order to feel better about the things he does.
I suppose it wasn't fair to say it wasn't about a soldier because a soldier who enjoys killing and goes merc would likely fit this general category too. Still, the song is more of a generalization of sinful people and not really focusing on specifics. Its not beautiful its sad.

General Comment:And I also don't think it's about drugs, everyone always tries to bring drugs into the mix. Jared Leto is an animal rights activist, a vegetarian, or vegan I believe, all about energy conservation, etc. Doubt he'd do a song on drugs.
