Lyrics for 7/4 (Shoreline) as interpreted by benadeutsch

7/4 (Shoreline) Lyrics
it's a shoreline
it's high speed
its a cruel world

and it's time
and you want to get away
oh where to go to
when you want to get it out
oh how to get through
if you want to get it all
you can own what you choose
and you want to live a lie
and love what you lose

it's a shoreline
it's high speed
its a cruel world
and it's time

And you're walking away
And you try to get through
but youve got another life
from the lies they told you
and you try to do it right,
and they all will see you
if you try to steal the beat ohh
the beat will steal you

its coming
its coming in hard

This song is about our lives. How some people live in a double standard. You love one sort of life or lifestyle but you must sacrifice it for another life expected of you. It is a tough decision too make and you feel very pressured emotionally due to time constraints, as the song hints, and "it's time" to make that decision.

I wonder if this applies to the whole band in general. I mean, they were all struggling musicians/singers/performers/music producers. It is likely that many of them felt pressured to leave their respective roles to live a more conventional life- getting into a more profitable career, buying a house, settling down with a life partner, raising a family, etc.

I'd like to point out that one of the things contributing to 7/4 (Shoreline)'s distinctive feel is that the song is played in 7/4 time (7 beats to a measure). They found such a wonderful groove using this uncommon time signature -- and they pay tribute to that not just in the title, but also in the line about trying to "steal the beat", which is kind of what happens in 7/4 time.

That's really cool, kirlen. I don't know anything about music in that sense so it's always amazing to hear about it. Anyhow, I love this song a lot.

Such a beautifully layered song, that produces such a giagantic sound that it will completely blow you away, over and over again. The timing is impecible and the melody floats so graciously. I only had the honor of seeing them perform this song on Conan O'Brien, but it made me fall in love with them even more. And Feist is truly awesome, and her angelic voice really adds the finishing touches to this masterpiece.

"But youve got another life
From the lies they told you"

To me, this song sounds like an internal as well as an external struggle. What I take from these lines is that one has to be active in defining oneself against the backdrop of social pressures. The most insidious are those who love us...as related in "It's all Gonna Break". I cannot look around at this world and recognize ANY moral authority that is both legitimate and qualified to set such an example that I would surrender my personal soveriegnty to follow. It's so important to distinguish the lies that others tell you from the lies that people tell themselves. Peace.

the power you can feel behind this song completely reminds me of the time I saw arcade fire in concert. both of those bands (bss and arcade) seem to harness this incredible energy into their music that just makes their live performances breathtaking. on another note does anyone have any ideas about the symbolism behind the line "it's a shoreline"?

tidal rabbit:

You know when you are on a boat, floating aimlessly in the water? You'd want to get on dry land, naturally. There are many of us who float helplessly in life. How many of us felt fear, pressure, uncertainty, angst, regarding life decisions? Perhaps the shoreline represents the way out; through that final decision. Right or wrong people find relief when they finally take action that's right for them. You will have get off the boat sometime.

I just saw BSS perform yesterday in Sheffield, UK, and when they began to play this song, Kevin Drew sang, "This is your line" instead of "it's a shoreline," and pointed at Andrew Whiteman, another guitarist. I know that's not the real line, but I love everyones fascination with the discrepanies between lyrics. The show was awesome, and I'm glad I got to witness a changing-of-the-lyrics moment!

Here are the correct lyrics that are posted on the BSS website:

It's a shoreline
And it's half speed
It's a cruel world and
And it's time

And you're walking away
But where to go to?
And you're walking alone,
But how to get through?
If you wanna get it right
You can own what you choose
But you wanna live a lie
And love what you lose

It's a shoreline
And it's half speed
It's a cruel world and
It's time

While you're walking away
And I'm trying to get through
But you've gotta know their lies
From the lies they've told you
If you try to do it up
It all will leave you
If you try to steal the beat
The beat will steal you

It's coming
It's coming in hard
It's coming
It's coming in hard
It's coming
It's coming in hard
It's coming
It's coming in hard
it's coming
It's coming in hard
It's coming
It's coming in hard
It's coming
It's coming in hard
It's coming
It's coming in-

It's a shoreline
And it's halfspeed
It's a cruel world
And it's time

It's coming
It's coming in hard
(repeat 7x's)

Hey naptownmandy, thanx 4 the corrected lyrics.
But you've gotta know their lies
From the lies they've told you
I felt like that was what I was hearing...not the lyrics posted above. That's important bcuz for me this is the hook-point of the song. As I alluded to above it is very important to be able to seperate the stoopidBS that people believe and honestly but mistakenly tell you in an effort to steer you right (eg, my family, the church, society) as opposed to the flat-out liars that are trying to f*** my life up by lying to me for their own benefit (eg: my FAMIL...the CHURCH...and definitely SOCIETY). Hey...funny how the same people can fit into both categories, ain't it? Do you know anyone like that? Unfortunately for me I know about 6 billion of them.

7/4 also translates into July/4th. I have no clue if this means anything, and i really don't care to speculate. but for those who do i'd just thought i'd throw it out there.

This song is very passionate, that much is obvious. The band members put a lot of energy into the work they do, and their material reflects this. The song is about trying to get by. In the music video for this song, there are images of the band playing interspersed with this group of four people driving along a beach, a shoreline. One of them is humorously wearing a zebra mask throughout. Two of them are leaning against each other, giving off a 'just married' feeling. The guy who is driving just smiles to himself as he drives, carefree, worry-free. The guy in the zebra mask does nothing. I think the song is about getting by in life, and how one is opposed in honest endeavors by malevolent elements. I think it ultimately has a positive outlook, I think it says 'everything's either already okay, or everything's going to be okay.' I like that.

I'm pretty sure the 7/4's referring to the time signature of the piece.

As for the shoreline, are we trying to get into the ocean and lose ourselves to be free or are we trying to stay on land to find ourselves in a tempered life? It's the balance that's tricky. To me, it's about bottling up passions to find a steady, successful path in life. You may own "stuff," and be well-off, but you're not really who you are. I think the last two lines are referring to the tide, passion's hand come to bear you away. In the end, it's the tide that always wins, whether it takes the form of violence from storing it all up or happiness from letting yourself shine.
