i can really relate to this song. What I think this song is trying to say is that two people likes each other and the both of them knows it but wont say anything.

Very simple...a relationship that ended with everything left up in the air. Leaving everything just as it was so one day there is a reason to go back. By leaving everything "unsaid" it lets there not be a real goodbye and a way to one day pick up where everything left off. "Not to say today" is also coming back to this notion of the future and the ability of it not being over forever, which is the safest way to end things so you never actually have to admit that it's really over.

This song was one of me and my ex's songs. At the time, I felt it was saying they were in a difficult position and trying to start the relationship and make it work out. Like they have a big age difference, this was our case, and they were both a little weary going into the whole thing. The funny catch is, when we stopped seeing eachother, he left it all 'unsaid' so to speak, and now i see the song as him never telling me what was wrong because i believe he was afraid to hurt me.

To me this song is about 2 people that are really into each other. both of them know the other likes them but they are leaving things unsaid... either because they know its not the right time or because they are just scared... i love the part where he says "not that your the one, not to say im right."

i think this song is about two people who were happy at one stage but now something has happened and they both need to talk about it but there scared of what the other will say "And we are leaving some things unsaid And we are breathing deeper instead"
i think they were getting along just "We're leaving things unsaid We sing ourselves to sleep Watching the day lie down instead" but then they just cant da it anymore "I can sing myself to sleep
No more" i think that vienna is closely related to this song. thats my opinion

I think that song is telling a story about a couple who were once happy, and now something is off in there relationship..it isn't a dramatic collapse or something fast pace but its a slow turn and both of them are complacent in it. In stead of getting into a fight and upsetting themselves in a break up, they're "breathing deeper instead" as in calmness. They both seem pretty sure of the other ones unhappiness but they both do nothing to end the relationship because they don't want to sing themselves to sleep anymore, they like the "we"...i think this is also a continuation of vienna...in fact i think its the song BEFORE vienna..before the open-ended break up "maybe in 5 or 10 your and mine can meet again..maybe then honest need not be feared as a friend..." .... :-)

This song means so much to me.
My boyfriend and I recently split up because my best friend told me he had cheated on me, though my boyfriend denies everything. It's difficult not knowing who to believe but I eventually chose my best friend.
To me, this song describes leaving someone because you have to, and being alone will be so different and so difficult and your still unsure whether you have done or said the right things or have had the right things said to you.

I agree with shibby shoes. I think this song is about two people who really like each other, but they never say it to each other. They both know yet they leave it unsaid for whatever reason. So sad...I completely identify...

it's like they give hints that they like each other and they understand the clues, only that i think these 2 people never really seem to find time to actually talk through it [probably they're not yet ready or they're scared of whatever might happen next]

"... We seem difficult
What we got is hard as hell"

it seems that not being honest to each other is the safest thing to do, but at the same time they find it really hard and painful to wait for someone to speak up

the "confrontation" gets shrugged off each time they meet or talk.. they always put it off until the next time they see each other [or at least that's how i see it]

these 2 keep giving off clues [probably more of the subliminal] that they like each other, but they never really confirm it as in "verbally" with the exact words

"We sing ourselves to sleep
Watching the day lie down instead"

maybe "sing ourselves to sleep" means that when they're together, they try not to make the most out of the chance to finally confess, thinking that making a move would leave things in a rather [ugly] unexpected state.. so they end up feeling discontented after a day ends that they're around each other


this song was done beautifully by the fray.. i think the mood set by this song magnifies its meaning of desperation for the truth and the unknown.. idk, i see it revolving more of around the "friends [or special friends] zone" hehe
