This is a fantastic song. One of the best off of Reason. Here's an article with Isaac talking about it:

"When I was 19, I started looking at the songs and how all my friends weren't connecting with my music. I pretty much threw them away, literally, and then broke up with my first girlfriend and chose to throw caution to the wind and write about that. That's actually a song on our second EP called "Ocean's Away." It was actually the first song I wrote about my life." -Isaac

this song is simply about a breakup, of maybe younger people. hes saying he really thought it would work and last FOREVER, but it isnt going to. it also shows that young people should get rid of thier ideals about true love, and that their one teen love will last forever. the whole thing with the castle crumbling to the ground. and then when it says
"Here's to the man of your dreams.

I take it all in a box and make my way down to the shore,
Throw it in and begin to leave it to the waves."
it says to let go of your ideal man, because life just isnt perfect like that.
great song!!

this is such a great song.

Honestly I thought that we could make it all the way,
Barefoot on beaches dancing against the gray.
But stone by stone the castle crumbled to the ground,
I stood and stared as you started to fall into the waves.

^^ that is the best part.. it's such a great analogy to thinking that your relationship could last and then just watching it fall away and wondering what happened.. siiiigh!

i rekon its about knowing the girl you love has found sombody new but your still in love, that last part means hes taking all his love and letting it get washed away coz he knows it over

This song is def about a breakup.. I think the last line is about getting rid of all your memories of the other person. It's like, getting rid of the shoebox of memorabilia/souvenirs that remind you of someone.

I can listen to this song all the time. Wow.

"I miss the words I love, the words you did not say". It seems that there were some commitment issues in this relationship, but the "kiss you never gave away" makes it seem like there was never much to the relationship to start with.

"I take it all in a box and make my way down to the shore,
Throw it in and begin to leave it to the waves."
This reminds me of people's ashes after cremation, throwing it to the sea. The relationship is already dead, and it's time to move on.

i'm inclined to agree with hopeful canyon...

i think this guy is head over heels stupidly in love with this girl who is a very close friend to him, (hence: Honestly I thought that we could make it all the way, Barefoot on beaches dancing against the gray).
However, he wants more, and he finally decided to let it all hang out and tell her, and she didn't respond in kind. She doesn't want more, and now he's left to deal with it.

Everyone is right about this song. You believe at such a young age, that youve found the "perfect" person. There is no such thing. I'm currently in a relationship, and I do feel as though I've found the perfect person, but I know it's not possible yet. Everyone believes they'll have a happy ending. It takes alot of bad relationships and experiences to result in a fairytale ending.

I love this song. I especially listen to it when I'm going through hard times, and it helps. Just leaving the pain to the waves. Oceans Away has officailly been my favorite song for months now, and it's often that my favorite changes.

I think he feels that he's so far from her, that he can stop fighting for her, because it wont do any good anymore.

"I miss the words i love, the words you did not say. I miss the kiss you never, never gave away."
He misses the kisses and the "i love you"'s he played over and over in his head, but never came true.

"There goes the sun, oceans away. And days die young when you're gone and you're gone."
He relates the sun to her by the warmth and life he feels when each is around... but fades and leaves him alone in his thoughts, cold, when they slip away over the horizon.

"There goes the sun, oceans away. And leaves the day for someone else"
He knows she's beyond his reach and has moved on to someone else.

"Honestly I thought that we could make it all the way, barefoot on beaches dancing against the gray."
He felt that she was the one, that they could live without worry (barefoot on the beach)

"But stone by stone the castle crumbled to the ground, I stood and stared as you started to fall into the waves"
But he realized the life he had built in hope that they'd be together was falling apart and she was slipping away out of his grasp. (becoming one of many "fish in the sea")

He wishes her luck in finding her Love, wanting the best for her.

He takes all the memories and love he has for her andgoes to the place he lost her (in the waves on the shore)

....but it doesnt work like that... the tide washes it all back to the shore. Everyday i see the ocean, the shore... and it all comes back, and i remember her.

I agree with what everyone is saying. It is a break up of a guy who thought he had found the girl, but he is VERY young, and it didn't get far "I miss the words I love, the words, you did not say. I miss the kiss you never gave away." And so he dumps her, but later he realizes, she would have been good for him, but it is too late. So he throws his memories of her away.
