The day's last one-way ticket train pulls in
We smile for the casual closure capturing
There goes the downpour
There goes my fare thee well

[Chorus]
There's really no way to reach me
There's really no way to reach me
There's really no way to reach me
'Cause I'm already gone

There's so many words that we can say
Spoken upon long-distance melody
This is my hello
This is my goodness

[Chorus]

Maybe in five or ten
Yours and mine will meet again
Straighten this whole thing out
Maybe then honesty need not be feared as a friend or an enemy
But this is the distance
And this is my game face

There's really no way to reach me
There's really no way to reach me
Is there really no way to reach me?
Am I already gone?
So this is your maverick
And this is Vienna

My Interpretation:He's breaking up with her, but he doesn't want to. "There's really no way to reach me, 'cuz I'm already gone". I think he means emotionally, because he can't handle it. He's emotionally shut off. Whether this occurred in Vienna or not, distance is an issue-- physical distance or emotional distance.

Maybe in 5-10 years they might be able sort things out... Honesty and fear are playing a role in this relationship. "But this is the distance"-- again, either emotional or physical.

"This is my game face"-- he's trying to hide his real feelings for some reason which he doesn't get into at all. IMO, I think he's been hurt and he has built emotional walls around him. But did this person do it to hi, or someone else? He doesn't say, but for some reason needs to leave.

And I don't think he's telling her that he's ending it. They take a last picture, and smile. Breakups don't work like that. She has no idea, and this one way train means he's not coming back for quite awhile. "Maybe" in 5 years or a decade. When he gets on the train, there goes the down pour"-- he cries after he gets on the train.

He repeatedly questions to himself: "Am I *really* gone?" And "Is there really NO way to reach me?". I think he's questioning himself and his barriers. He's not talking about reaching him via phone-- he means emotionally.

A "maverick" is someone who doesn't use traditional methods; they're rebellious, they're independent and unconventional.

People in Vienna Austria have a stereotype for being cold, aloof, and impolite. Obviously, stereotypes are generally wrong and cannot possibly be true for all people, of course.

She has some kind of maverick, and since "this" is Vienna, he's leaving, while trying to keep a straight face.

General Comment:Okay well to me, this song seems like it has something to do with two people; couple or non-couple. It just depends how you want to look at it.
But it's two people who are obviously saying their goodbyes to each other, and it seems they aren't really ready to say this goodbye but are being forced to? or because it's what they believe is the best for now. The lyrics say "Maybe in five or ten yours and mine will meet again, straighten this whole thing out. Maybe then honesty need not be feared as a friend or enemy." This seems to mean that apparently right now things can't be settled, as if they're too close to it and need to step back and give it five or ten years of growing so they can figure it out. And the honesty quote seems to mean something a long the lines of not being able to accept what's happened but five ten years down the line it would have blown over making the truth - honesty not feared as an enemy or welcomed as a friend. just sort of a fact. So they're distancing themselves, and he says "this is my gameface" as if it's a tough decision but he's gonna have to be strong about it.

    And the last two lines,

    This is your maverick.
    This is Vienna.

Maverick - someone who exhibits great independence in thought and action

maybe the person who he's saying this two wanted to be free or "independent" and thought this was for the better so him leaving is her maverick and opportunity. "This is Vienna." is a little harder.. it could mean their chance to find something greater? or simply just be reffering to it as the city.

General Comment:What's interesting is the chorus makes you think he is being kind of a bit hard-hearted about the relationship ending like "whatever you can't get me back, i'm gone" but what's so beautifully heart-breaking is when he says "This is my game face"....almost like he is in just as much pain as her, but he's trying not to show it because he's trying to do what he thinks is the right thing to do..at least at this point in their lives.... also at the end where he starts questioning "Is there really no way to reach me? Am i already gone?" almost like as he's saying goodbye, about to leave, his game face and his resolution is starting to crumble, because even though this seems to be the right thing to do, he really does love her that much, regardless.

General Comment:This song actually really gets to me
because the way he sings it
it makes me feel like he's saying goodbye to the world
i know people might think i'm wierd when i say that
but thats what i think of when i hear this song
every time i listen to it
    i just want to cry.

Song Comparison:As to the Maverick comment and this song in general: The song seems to be the end of some sort of relationship be it for the better or worse. On the next album the song "you found me" is a song about the beginning of a new relationship (possibly with God although Isaac is not a practicing christian), for better or worse. The connection is this-

In Maverick County, Texas, there is a small town called Quemado; Right along the Rio Grande. Do a quick google maps search and you'll see that there is an intersection in that very small town of 1st and Amistad. I'm not saying the two songs are related, but it is an interesting little tidbit for the conspiracy theorists.

Song Meaning:In my own opinion, this song is not JUST typical break-up song. He wanted to break-up before they both become ATTACH to each other.

"The day's last one-way ticket train pulls in --- IT'S LIKE HE HAD ENOUGH, THIS IS THE LAST, AS IN THE LAST AND
FINAL TIME HE WILL SAY GOODBYE!

We smile for the casual closure capturing. ---THEY LITERALLY SMILE CASUALLY, AND THE FAREWELL THINGY CAME
    ACROSS THEIR SMILES.
Here comes the downpour --- IT'S THE BREAKDOWN ON THE GIRL SIDE
There goes my fare thee well" --- THIS IS THE WAY HE SAYS 'GOODLUCK' AND "GOODBYE AND TAKE CARE' TO THE GIRL

There's really no way to reach me
There's really no way to reach me
There's really no way to reach me
'Cause I'm already gone --- IT'S LIKE HE'S SAYING THAT HE'S ALREADY GONE--- LIKE THE FEELING IS GONE. 'NO WAY'
    IS LIKE A 'MAD' PHASE.

Only so many words that we could say
    Spoken upon long-distance melody.
    This is my hello
This is my goodness -- SINCE THE GIRL IS TOO FAR AWAY FROM HIM, NOW HE CAN SAY WHAT HE WANTED TO SAY TO HER
BEFORE THROUGH HIS SONGS, AND THAT MEANS, THIS IS HIS "HELLO" AND HIS "GOODNESS" IN
    SARCASTIC WAY.

Maybe in five or ten yours and mine will meet again
Straighten this whole thing out. ---- HE WAS JUST SPECULATING IF THIS THING BETWEEN THE TWO OF THEM WILL WORK
OUT AFTER 5 OR 10 YEARS. IT SHOULD BE 'STRAIGHTEN' WHAT THEY HAD
(RELATIONSHIP)WAS TOTALLY TWISTED AND THEY NEED TO SETTLE THE UNSETTLED.

Maybe then honesty need not be feared as a friend or an enemy --- THIS LINE FOR ME IS LIKE THE GIRL HAS DONE
SOMETHING TO HIM, OR MAYBE SHE CHEATED ON HIM,
THAT THE GIRL IS AFRAID TO CONFESS ABOUT.
    But this is the distance
And this is my gameface --- 'BUT' HE'S ABSOLUTELY DETERMINED TO DISTANT HIMSELF FROM HER.

So this is your maverick ---- THE GIRL HAS DONE SOMETHING REBELLIOUS THAT CAUSED THE DISRUPTION.
And this is Vienna ---- THIS IS A WAY HE IS TELLING THAT HE'S IN A PEACEFUL PLACE, WHERE HE'S ACTUALLY LIVE
HAPPILY, DESPITE WHAT SHE DID TO HIM, HE IS HAPPY!!!

General Comment:to everyone questioning about the "so this is your maverick this is vienna" here is my meaning

obviously the guy is leaving. i agree with earlier comments that he is too hurt or confused to deal with anything. they still love each other but there is something that they cant get past for whatever reason. When he leaves he says so this is your maverick almost as if to say so this is it? this is your ultimatum or this is how you are going to end things? its her maverick, its the unexpected end that he cant account for. What they had was love a beautiful thing that they could live and grow in like the city vienna but now just like every good thing comes to an end he finds that he must leave vienna and his love. Thats the way it ends. There was the maverick, well this is vienna. Thats how love ends.
