Lyrics for Vienna as interpreted by Alli-oh!

Vienna Lyrics
The day's last one-way ticket train pulls in
We smile for the casual closure capturing.
Here comes the downpour
There goes my fare thee well

There's really no way to reach me
There's really no way to reach me
There's really no way to reach me
‘Cause I'm already gone

Only so many words that we could say
Spoken upon long-distance melody.
This is my hello
This is my goodness

There's really no way to reach me
There's really no way to reach me
There's really no way to reach me
‘Cause I'm already gone

Maybe in five or ten yours and mine will meet again
Straighten this whole thing out.
Maybe then honesty need not be feared as a friend or an enemy
But this is the distance
And this is my gameface

There's really no way to reach me
There's really no way to reach me
Is there really no way to reach me?
Am I already

So this is your maverick
And this is Vienna

I just feel when I listen to this song like he was writing about a hard goodbye. . . maybe to someone he loved. And thats not even with looking at the lyrics (which only strengthen my feelings about it). I love his voice on this song

to me this song seems to be about a girl and guy who had some kind of falling out, and they still love each other, but for whatever reason hes leaving. she wants to work it out, but he doesnt, and hes telling her theres really no way to reach him now, hes GONE and theres nothing she can do. theyve done all the talking that can be done, there isnt anything left, and he needs space. he says maybe someday in five or ten years he'll be ready to work it out with her, but right now he just needs to leave, clear his head, because honesty is too hard. hes running away he cant handle it right now. hes gone, its over, theres no way to reach him now it just too late to make the relationship work. sad song :(

I agree with thelemon. I think this boy and girl had a falling out, still love each other, but aren't able to patch things up...at least not now because it's too soon [maybe in five or ten yours and mine will meet again and straighten this whole thing out]. Things are just rocky between them, and being together involves a lot of heartache.

I also see it like this: this girl hurt this boy, and he is too hurt to fix things [there's really no way to reach me. I'm already gone].

Ok, The Fray isn't that bad of a band in itself, but personally I am into the more "screamo, emo" genre...but I still appreciate a little mix in their once in a while. Vienna is a great thing for that but definitely not their best.
Btw, the lyrics go
"There goes the downpour"
not
"Here comes the downpour"
that's what my song sounds like anyways.
Have fun with it.

This song always makes me picture a European train station, and there's a guy and a girl, and they're breaking up because he has to leave. They say goodbye, and he's sitting on the train, watching the rain on the window, full of regret.
But maybe that's just cause it mentions Vienna, which makes me think of Europe.
It's such a pretty song, and so emotional.

What do the last two lines mean?

"So this is your maverick
And this is Vienna"

Is this just a reference to distance?

I adore this song! I understand most of the metaphors...but does anyone know what they mean by "this is your maverick", I don't really get that part. Thanks!!

"so this is your maverick and this is vienna" that part to me is almost sarcastic. for some reason i took it as meaning that the person he left behind is thinking "so youre leaving me here to be spontaneous?". (maverick usually means a unique or unconventional person but perhaps in this case it is a new destination or an adventure, perhaps theyre going to vienna!)
GREAT SONG

I love this song. I think it means that Issac is leaving vienna because he had a fight with his girlfriend and he dosn't want to try figuring it out anymore.

I have thought about this song since I posted my question and have come up with an idea as to what the last two lines mean.

"So this is your maverick
And this is Vienna"

I do not agree with morgan macd that the person being left behind is the maverick but instead the singer/narrator is the maverick. saying this is YOUR maverick makes me think she liked that he is a maverick and this is th outcome of that (kinda weak I know).

And this is vienna! That is a bit easier in my opinion. When I think of vienna I think of a beautiful city with everything that you could want (culture, life, and so on); but the city is sinking into oblivion. He is saying that the relationship is like vienna. It seems perfect and perhaps is but for some reason the relationship is sinking like vienna will be no more.

Tell me what you think

Has anyone ever related this to WW2 and/or the Holocaust?

"Vienna, Austria" is an area where a portion of the Holocaust happened.

"The day's last one-way ticket train pulls in..."
When the prisoners were being brought to camps, it was for many, a one-way ticket train.

"There goes the downpour... There goes my fare thee well"
Men from women, familys from familys, people from themselves. It's goodbye, and knowingly, for good.

"There's really no way to reach me"
There was absolutely no way to contact anyone inside the camps, and no contact going out either.

"'Cause I'm already gone"
By the time the liberators got there, a lot of people had already died.

The entire second verse makes me think of the prisoner's screaming from help from foreign countries to come in and save them from the situation.

The bridge "Maybe in five or ten..." seems like a plee to end the war. Maybe in five or ten years this will be straightened out and honesty need not be feared as a friend or an enemy -- truth hurts, but it builds strong lasting solid relationships.

And lastly, "so this is your maverick. this is vienna".

Maverick means indepence, doing what you will when you will.

Saying, the rest of the world may have it's fancies and riches and freedoms, but this is just Vienna. The hell they live is not a maverick, it's simply, Vienna.

If you read this meaning and then look up "Vienna" you wont find much of a definition more than that of it being a City in Austria. I think this song creates one.

What do you think...?

newdawn....I'm pretty sure it's Venice that you are thinking of that's sinking, and not Vienna...a good interpretation though nonetheless, though geographically inaccurate :)

Isaac said that Vienna was "a breakup song I wrote about a girl before we even started going out"

I can completely understand this, the "there is really no way to reach me" is completely understandable, you feel like there is no way the girl will be able to understand you, because no one ever has, and she will probably no different - pessimistic, a bit.

I understand this whole song perfectly. And if you really pay attention to it, it is a break up song.
The parts that reach out the most to me are "Maybe in five or ten yours and mine will meet again" and "Maybe then honesty need not be feared as a friend or an enemy" When you can put simple average words together and make them sound beautiful, and poetic, then you are a special music artist. Only few can capture the essence of life and the Fray is one of those few.

This song reminds me so, so much of "Before Sunrise", and consequently "Before Sunset"...two of my favorite movies.

A great song. An amazing movie.

To me, this song is about an impossible relationship that the two people tried desperately to MAKE possible.

The author, who is leaving, has become tired of trying to work it out: "there are only so many words that we can say", but also knows that there isn't really a "fare thee well" either.. there just isn't a way right now to make it work out. The reference to Maverick, to me, means that the author wanted to break free of the mold, make the relationship work despite all the barriers that were in the way, but the other just couldn't do it. But he is still hopeful. He offers that his leaving is also "my hello" and "my goodness" meaning that the door isn't really closed either... hence the bridge talking about 5 or 10 years.. when they are older, they won't run from the simple truth of their love.

What I always wonder is why people fight love.. why do people fight it off or throw it away when they find something as wonderful as whatever inspired this song.

The most beautiful thing about the song is the soothing piano lines I think. The first time I heard the song, I remember hearing the piano and already loving it because it just sounded so beautiful. I'm not a very good judge of lyrics though but I think most of the people here have to right idea.
