Between this world and the next
I want to locate a bit of you
will I feel it or gaze in emptiness
who'd guess it could be so unfinished
a never ending infernal process
yeah where is that bliss
the ordinary life I knew that was so exquisite

You long for the flowers
I get more from the hours spent
minutes that are free of dissent
a day without argument

You said you long for the flowers
that you remember
a song sang from the shower
how I used to bend words
you asked me where did all that go
and I have no answer
I admit that I'm giving up hope
and wondering if it can survive

One day will we just begin again
one day will we begin again

You said you long for the flowers
that you remember
a song sang from the shower
how I used to bend words
you asked me where did all that go
and I have no answer
I admit that I'm giving up hope
and wondering if it can survive

Don't think I take lightly
the wilting we feel
I wish for surviving
but time, but time
it steals like a thief

Whoa, don't think I take take lightly
the wilting we feel
I wish for surviving
but time, but time
it steals like a thief

General Comment:It's about getting older, coming upon a midlife crisis, and trying to figure out where to get your happiness from at that age. The "you" in the song gets his/her happiness from memories of beautiful flowers as a symbol of the beautiful end product of months of growth, while Nick seems to be trying to get happiness from that process of growth, the single minutes and days spent content, without fighting. SA's part and Nick's second chorus ("steals like a thief") seem to be highlighting that in all of this time is still ticking away out of their control.

It's possible that this is just about a relationship growing stale and trying to find happiness still, but I think it's a bit deeper than that, with all of SA's parts about "will we begin again?" and "between this world and the next."

General Comment:Whoever says 311 is losing it is full of shit. 311 is the best band ever and have been together without breaking up like all other bands. They have the best songs. Quit trying to find hidden meanings in songs, I think this song is about a relationship, but none of us know what its about, except the artist themselves.

General Comment:tenclub, in answer to your question...no. dtom is just as timely and well-put together as every other 311 record. had it been a collaboration of old demos, it wouldn't have flowed nearly as well and each song would have had a different feel. also, if anyone's looking for an out on why they maybe didn't love dtom off the bat, it was rushed. and also, nick gave SA creative reign on this cd. nick just threw in a little input, suggested a couple melodies, and sang them how SA wrote them.

General Comment:I think this song definately has references to Mrs. Dalloway, by Virginia Woolf.

General Comment:not sure what it's about.
it was originally called grifter; and intstrumental demo from transistor.

wonder if all the songs from don't tread on me are just instrumental demos from other albums with lyrics added to make them seem new?

General Comment:no no no, this song ain't about the ppl saying 311 is turning soft, because then in the chorus nick wouldn't say "ans I have no answer" they DO have an answer, "THEY ARE EVOLVING", and that is what 311 is about, the whole new vibe you get from album to album, so I think is prob about a girl... (although miss SA rapping and scratching still luv'em!)

General Comment:giving up hope in reviving whatever it is that older fans feel that 311 has lost as they've aged.

General Comment:gee, I hope it is about a girl...

"you asked me where did all that go
    and I have no answer
I admit that I'm giving up hope
and wondering if it can survive"

Because if the chorus describes the old school style then whats the giving up hope part about...?
