Love of mine
Someday you will die
But I'll be close behind
I'll follow you into the dark

No blinding light
Or tunnels, to gates of white
Just our hands clasped so tight
Waiting for the hint of a spark

[Chorus]
If Heaven and Hell decide that they both are satisfied
Illuminate the no's on their vacancy signs
If there's no one beside you when your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark

Catholic school, as vicious as Roman rule
I got my knuckles bruised by a lady in black
I held my tongue as she told me, son
Fear is the heart of love, so I never went back

[Chorus]

You and me have seen everything to see
From Bangkok to Calgary
The soles of your shoes are all worn down
The time for sleep is now
It's nothing to cry about
Cause we'll hold each other soon
The blackest of rooms

[Chorus]

I'll follow you into the dark

General Comment:Words can't describe how amazing these lyrics are. I'll do my best to interpret what I believe the meaning of the song is, though.

    Love of mine
    Someday you will die
    But I'll be close behind
I'll follow you into the dark
[This shows that he is acknowledging the fact that one day his lover will die, and there is no escaping that fate which all humans face. However, he is reassuring his lover that he will follow her into death and be with her for whatever is to come.]

    No blinding light
Or tunnels, to gates of white
Just our hands clasped so tight
Waiting for the hint of a spark
[This line suggests that he doesn't believe that you immediately go to Heaven after death. In Catholicism, it is believed that after death a soul goes to Purgatory where they await fate. You don't know yet if you are going to Heaven or Hell, and have to "wait" for whatever is to come, hence "waiting for the hint of a spark".]

If Heaven and Hell decide that they both are satisfied
Illuminate the no's on their vacancy signs
If there's no one beside you when your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark
[This line is so beautiful. He is telling his lover that if in Purgatory it is decided that he is not fit for Heaven or Hell, he will await the fate of his lover. If she is destined the same fate as he is, hence "if there's no one beside you when your soul embarks", he will follow her to wherever it is she must go. The dark symbolizes the unknown.]

Catholic school, as vicious as Roman rule
I got my knuckles bruised by a lady in black
I held my tongue as she told me, son
Fear is the heart of love, so I never went back
[This line is about what a teacher of his said to him back when he was at school, which may or may not have inspired him to write this song. "Fear is the heart of love" means that fearing love is natural, and love can only be felt through fear. He did not believe this, and never went back to the school because the thought of what the teacher had said to him was so powerful that he did not want to go back.]

You and me have seen everything to see
    From Bangkok to Calgary
The soles of your shoes are all worn down
The time for sleep is now
    It's nothing to cry about
Cause we'll hold each other soon
    The blackest of rooms
[This, I believe, are the most powerful lines in the whole song. It's saying that him and his lover are near the end of their lifetime on Earth. His lover is scared, but he is reassuring her that they won't be apart for long.]

This song is just so beautiful and powerful. I hope one day to experience a love this strong.

General Comment:I don't really think this is about love in the romantic sense. We love a lot of people, and I think that this song is about telling someone that you love, whether it be your best friend, your wife/girlfriend, or your mom, that you won't let them be alone when their souls "embark".

It's easy to just stamp "love song" on these lyrics, but what really got me thinking were the lyrics "If there's no one beside you, when your soul embarks...". It made me feel like they're letting them know that even if you don't have a wife/husband/boyfriend/girlfriend/bestfriend, that they'll be there to follow them into the dark.

Also, this song does not necessarily have to do with death directly. Death may just be symbolism for a time that someone is dealing with something that is really heavy. When we are crippled by depression, or anxiety, we are effectively "dead" because living a life run by depression isn't really living.

Song Comparison:In general, I feel like this song illustrates growing old together, and that they know the inevitable is coming. He doesn't care where they go (whether heaven, hell, or just darkness), he just wants to spend the rest of eternity with her. Referencing Catholic schools with nuns and rulers, it sort of alludes to an older time, because I haven't really heard of any schools that still have that policy in the last twenty or thirty years.
I also noticed that this song has elements that reference Soul Meets Body. If I apply this interpretation to that song as well, then it fills in the time when they were younger together.
In Soul Meets Body, the chorus ("I do believe its true/That there are [roads?] left in both of our shoes/But if the silence takes you/Then I hope it takes me too") leads to the emotions felt in this song. There, they are young, but have every intention of being together for the remainder of their lives. It feels like maybe they traveled together, which ties to "You and me have seen everything to see/From Bangkok to Calgary/The soles of your shoes are all worn down" which is followed by "The time for sleep is now/It's nothing to cry about/Cause we'll hold each other soon/The blackest of rooms"
Maybe my thoughts aren't all-too clear, but when playing them in succession I sort can't help but notice that.

General Comment:dont think hes creating conditions to be met before following. seems more like that if she should die and heaven and hell have no vacancy...he'll go with her into the dark just because he doesnt want her to be alone in the unknown.

im sure everyone has heard that the greatest emotion is fear and the greatest fear is the fear of the unkown. so with that thought in mind....maybe this is the idea of fear being at the heart of love. be afraid together and face it. i dunno...it made more sense in my head before i started typin.

General Comment:Oh, man, I had never heard this band until NOW. The concert is on TV tonight. I had no idea who I was listening to, but fell in love almost immediately. WoW. Good band. It sounds very much like another, although I can't (yet) place it. They lyrics seem self-explanatory. WoW, what a sound. Time to hit some YouTube for videos afer the concert ends...

My Interpretation:He is acknowledging that one day his love will die and that he will soon follow, into the unknown.
The spark may refer to them being reborn, as in the spark of life, and they are holding each other so they may find each other again when it happens, they both will be reborn together.
If she dies before him he will follow into the unknown.
He rejects possibly both, the idea that Fear is at the heart of love, and also the nuns doctrine.
And lastly they have a good life together, death is nothing to regret, for they will soon be together again, in Death, the blackest of rooms, but she will not be alone.

All in all one of the finest songs expressing what love means.

My Interpretation:I think really there are two meanings to this song- the first being the literal one of someone promising they'll never leave their love. But the second I feel is so complex that I can't really properly explain it, but I'll give it a shot. I think it's about the journey we all go through of growing up, maturing and learning what the world is really like.

The first verse is when a person realizes for the first time that they will eventually die, and it's a difficult concept to come to terms with. But, "No blinding lights or tunnels to gates of white," is reassurance to the person that death isn't as scary as it may seem. Everyone goes through the same thing, so that person is no exception and won't be alone.

The second verse is when the person becomes an adult, and is thrown into the world and learns what it's really like. Perhaps it is much more brutal than they expected because of all the rules, and the person's hopes and dreams are crushed by the harsh reality. It is like the person's innocence is being crushed by everyone else's experience (like Charles Dicken's theory of innocence and experience), so the person is forced to conform. But the lyrics, "I held my tongue," implies the person is reluctant to conform, as they don't want to become like everyone else.

In the final verse the person is very old, at the doors of death. They have seen the ways of the world, and are tired of watching people lose their innocence and gain experience. They don't want to see it anymore as too many people's dreams have been crushed, and so they welcome death. They are ready to go, so they no longer have the same irrational fear that they had once when they were young- now they know better. The lyrics, "The time for sleep is now, but it's nothing to cry about," supports this, as the person is no longer sad about dying and is ready to take the same journey that everyone else must one day take.

...A bit long I know, but this is my favourite song ever.

General Comment:I think that the line "Son, fear is the heart of love, so I never went back" is saying that he went out to do things that scared him to see if he would love them. He may have pursued things that he loved ding, or chased after a girl, such as the one in the song.

    Just my opinion.

General Comment:I'll take a stab at it. But from what I understand it sounds like he's creating a hypothetical situation out of the inevitability of death. First he's saying "IF, heaven and hell decide, that they both are satisfied." He's saying "If" which makes it conditional. Which means he will ONLY follow her in to the dark under those conditions. (may seem messed up but let me get there it's actually quite sweet) moving on,"Illuminate the 'nos' on their vacancy signs" Means that they're both full/booked/out of room/not accepting new occupants, of course.
So I see him saying he'd commit suicide, if and ONLY IF, heaven and hell were full. Because OTHERWISE if heaven and hell were NOT full when her soul departed and he proceeded to kill himself, they would NOT end up in the same place. He would be in hell and her likely in heaven is what I am assuming his thought process was. So he thought of the only possible way for him to be with someone when they die . And it is for heaven and hell to be full so he is allowed to kill himself without being punished and they both go forever in to nothingness. And that is why it is conditional. I see him literally saying he'd kill himself for her if heaven and hell were basically non existant, but the fact that he says "IF" tells me he wouldn't do it if he knew he would go to hell. which is indirectly saying he would stay alive if they did exist and endure the torture without her just to be there with her in the end in heaven.
