Your defenses were on high
Your walls built deep inside
Yeah, I'm a selfish bastard
But at least I'm not alone

My intentions never change
What I wanted stays the same
And I know what I should do
It's time to set myself on fire

Was it a dream?
Was it a dream?
Is this the only evidence that proves it
A photograph of you and I?

Your reflection I've erased
Like a thousand burned out yesterdays
Believe me when I say goodbye forever
Is for good

Was it a dream?
Was it a dream?
Is this the only evidence that proves it
A photograph of you and I?

Whoa, yeah! Whoa

Was it a dream?
Was it a dream?
Is this the only evidence that proves it
A photograph of you and I?
(A photograph of you and I)
Was it a dream?
Was it a dream?
Is this the only evidence that proves it
A photograph of you and I
A photograph of you and I
A photograph of you and I?

In love

Memory:My freshman year of college i was going through an inner struggle with my self and alot of people in my past. I didnt talk to my abusive mother for 2.5 years, and I havent spoken to a best friend in years. All i have are a few happy pictures. I felt like the only relationship I had with those people where through my dreams and my photographs, of course. I knew it was selfish of me to completely cut my mom off but she has been selfish as well with her temper and hurtful words and physical abuse. as far as "intensions being the same" it was just trying to proove to her that I was strong and I didnt need her and for her to see how cruel she had become. I would walk around campus in the middle of the night and listen to this song and cry. This song kind of echos when you listen to his voice..kind of like listening to yourself think of memories.

General Comment:Why is it that so many people think that songs are about a relationship with someone? Look a little deeper. There are many types of relationships. There are the relationships you have with yourself, with someone else of course, and also with your idea of the Infinite or your Higher Self. This song seems to be talking more about a spiritual relationship than a mundane one. "Was it a dream?" could be talking about how when you glimpse the Infinite you wonder if you're going crazy and hope it was only a dream. Plus I feel that this verse doesn't go with it being about a mundane relationship:

    My intentions never change
What I want still stays the same
And I know what I should do
Its time to set myself on fire

General Comment:when i first heard this song i thought the lyrics said
"if this is what i hide
    it was built deep inside
    another selfish past-time
but at least im not alone"

In terms of meaning, Leto is really just trying to get across the message about the colapse of humanity.
Was it a dream that the world used to be how it was because these days people are always trying to move forward, when if they looked into the past they might see that the world was a better place back then.
I hope this offers some insight, this song makes me cry every time.

General Comment:What if this song was about someone being in a dreamstate and living their life, only to see something from reality which questions whether there living a lie or not.

To be honest, I guess im trying to relate it to Supernatural.

General Comment:This song cops Prayers For Rain by The Cure pretty badly. At least Jared doesn't deny it.

General Comment:To be honest i don't think this song is about a relationship ending or something around those lines at all. People assume 30 Seconds to Mars is one of those bands that sing of relationships, but they really don't. Take the kill for example, people think it is about someone telling someone its over and its hurting them etc, but its really about a battle with one's inner self, as the lead singer, Jared, stated to the press. I'm not too sure what this song is about but i know for sure it is not about a relationship.

General Comment:I think maybe it was a great relationship that suddenly and unexpectedly ended, and all that is left is a photograph(maybe a metaphor for a memory even). He is unsure of whether or not it really happened because it seemed too perfect til it all went away
