Lyrics for Was It A Dream as interpreted by Rocky1480

Was It A Dream Lyrics
Your defense is where I'll hide
Your walls built deep inside
Yeah I'm a selfish bastard
But at least I'm not alone

My intentions never change
What I want still stays the same
And I know what I should do
Its time to set myself on fire

Was it a dream?
Was it a dream?
Is this the only evidence that proves
A photograph of you and I

Your reflection I've erased
Like a thousand burned out yesterdays
Believe me when I say goodbye forever
Is for good

Was it a dream?
Was it a dream?
Is this the only evidence that proves
A photograph of you and I
(a photograph of you and I)

Was it a dream?
Was it a dream?
Is this the only evidence that proves
A photograph of you and I
(A photograph of you and I)
Was it a dream?
Was it a dream?
Is this the only evidence that proves
A photograph of you and I
A photograph of you and I
A photograph of you and I

to me this song is about being with someone and knowing that things are completely over. like he doesnt want her anymore...but he's wondering if being with her was a dream you know proving that there really was a connection there...but he doesnt want her anymore..and hes saying that when he says its over and goodbye is forever he's meaning the realtionship is over..hes erased her from his mind completely just knowing he did that he's wondering "was it a dream is this the only evidence that proves a photograph of you and i"

such a beauitful song

I can relate to this song, me and my ex broke up because she cheated on me and I will never forgive her for it, I have gotten over her and everytime I see her picture I get sick to my stomach. Back when we broke up I thought it was a dream and it wasn't.

I get the feeling a relationship is ending, of course. But I think he liked the relationship, loved it even. I think maybe she changed or stopped loving him, ending the relationship. He still loves her, but can't stand not being with her. He has to kill a part of himself off (And I know what I should do/Its time to set myself on fire). Even though he knows it has to be over, he still wishes it was alive, he was so happy in the relationship that he wonders if it was real or not, if maybe it was a dream. But it can't be, because he has the photograph of them together.

Everyone sayys the relationship is ending but I say its already over....he thinks about it....and he realizes everything he loved was over, everything was a fake, so thats why he asks if everything was a dream cause the only evidence he has of what happened is a photograph....no feelings, nothing else!! You should comment more since this is an awesome song!

this is about a relationship that has ended and he tried so hard to forget everything that now when he thinks about the relationship he can't remember if it ever really happened at all... and the only reason he knows that it had to have been real is because he has a picture to prove it... that's what i get from it... this could be included in the soundtrack of my life... cuz i definitly relate to this song

As much as I think you all have good insight toward this song, I happen to know none of you are correct. I heard a live version of this song where Jared introduced it, and he said he wrote this song while in Africa, and it talks about the beauty that he saw, while also seeing the failure of humanity with everything going on around there. A pretty powerful piece, and definitely one of my favorite 30 stm songs.

30 SECONDS TO MARS LYRICS

"Was It A Dream?"

Your defenses were on high
Your walls built deep inside
Yeah I'm a selfish bastard
But at least I'm not alone
My intentions never change
What I wanted stays the same
And I know what I should do
it's time to set myself on fire
Was it a dream?
Was it a dream?
Is this the only evidence that proves it
A photograph of you and I
Your reflection I've erased
Like a thousand burned out yesterdays
Believe me when I say goodbye forever
Is for good
Was it a dream?
Was it a dream?
Is this the only evidence that proves it
A photograph of you and I
Was it a dream?
Was it a dream?
Is this the only evidence that proves it
A photograph of you and I
(A photograph of you and I)
Was it a dream?
Was it a dream?
Is this the only evidence that proves it
A photograph of you and I
A photograph of you and I
A photograph of you and I... in love...

I agree with docpostal to an extent, it's just the first line

"Your defenses were on high
Your walls built deep inside
Yeah I'm a selfish bastard
But at least I'm not alone"

Seems like he's feeling guilty about something and maybe doesn't feel like he deserves to be with her but he stays anyways to kill off the lonely ness, but later in the song he leaves her

"Believe me when I say goodbye forever
Is for good"

He's telling her that beleive him, cause it's over for good this time, there's no going back, the song is very vague and open for your own meaning.

I think maybe it was a great relationship that suddenly and unexpectedly ended, and all that is left is a photograph(maybe a metaphor for a memory even). He is unsure of whether or not it really happened because it seemed too perfect til it all went away

To be honest i don't think this song is about a relationship ending or something around those lines at all. People assume 30 Seconds to Mars is one of those bands that sing of relationships, but they really don't. Take the kill for example, people think it is about someone telling someone its over and its hurting them etc, but its really about a battle with one's inner self, as the lead singer, Jared, stated to the press. I'm not too sure what this song is about but i know for sure it is not about a relationship.

This song cops Prayers For Rain by The Cure pretty badly. At least Jared doesn't deny it.

What if this song was about someone being in a dreamstate and living their life, only to see something from reality which questions whether there living a lie or not.

To be honest, I guess im trying to relate it to Supernatural.

when i first heard this song i thought the lyrics said
"if this is what i hide
it was built deep inside
another selfish past-time
but at least im not alone"

In terms of meaning, Leto is really just trying to get across the message about the colapse of humanity.
Was it a dream that the world used to be how it was because these days people are always trying to move forward, when if they looked into the past they might see that the world was a better place back then.
I hope this offers some insight, this song makes me cry every time.

Why is it that so many people think that songs are about a relationship with someone? Look a little deeper. There are many types of relationships. There are the relationships you have with yourself, with someone else of course, and also with your idea of the Infinite or your Higher Self. This song seems to be talking more about a spiritual relationship than a mundane one. "Was it a dream?" could be talking about how when you glimpse the Infinite you wonder if you're going crazy and hope it was only a dream. Plus I feel that this verse doesn't go with it being about a mundane relationship:

My intentions never change
What I want still stays the same
And I know what I should do
Its time to set myself on fire

My freshman year of college i was going through an inner struggle with my self and alot of people in my past. I didnt talk to my abusive mother for 2.5 years, and I havent spoken to a best friend in years. All i have are a few happy pictures. I felt like the only relationship I had with those people where through my dreams and my photographs, of course. I knew it was selfish of me to completely cut my mom off but she has been selfish as well with her temper and hurtful words and physical abuse. as far as "intensions being the same" it was just trying to proove to her that I was strong and I didnt need her and for her to see how cruel she had become. I would walk around campus in the middle of the night and listen to this song and cry. This song kind of echos when you listen to his voice..kind of like listening to yourself think of memories.
