Lyrics for Crooked Teeth as interpreted by Si_duffers

Crooked Teeth Lyrics
It was 100 degrees as we sat beneath a willow tree
Whose tears didn't care, they just hung in the air
And refused to fall, to fall
I knew I'd made a horrible call
And now the state line felt like the Berlin wall
And there was no doubt about which side I was on

Because I built you a home in my heart
With rotten wood that decayed from the start

Because you can't find nothing at all
If there was nothing there all along
No, you can't find nothing at all
If there was nothing there all along

I braved treacherous streets
And kids strung out on homemade speed
And we shared a bed in which I could not sleep
At all, woo hoo, woo hoo oo oo hoo
At night, the sun in retreat
Made the skyline look like crooked teeth
In the mouth of a man who was devouring us both
You're so cute when you're slurring your speech
But they're closing the bar and they want us to leave

And you can't find nothing at all
If there was nothing there all along
No, you can't find nothing at all
If there was nothing there all along

I'm a war of head versus heart
And it's always this way
My head is weak, my heart always speaks
Before I know what it will say

Because you can't find nothing at all
If there was nothing there all along
No, you can't find nothing at all
If there was nothing there all along
There were churches, theme parks and malls
There was nothing there all along

This song went for too much of a super-rock poppy thing not unlike Sound of Settling, I personally think it's also one of the "eh" songs off the band, especially if you're a fan of their older material.

These lyrics are wrong. The corrections are below. Though yeah, I agree, I think it's a bit too poppy.

I'm a war, of head versus heart,
And it's always this way.
My head is weak, my heart always speaks,
Before I know what it will say.

I have a feeling that this song is about a man who did something to really piss off his girlfriend. He went back to make up with her and they got it worked out. They went home that night after the bar. On his walk home he gets to thinking about how little they are getting along these days. After thinking it through that night he decided that their relationship just might be shit.

that is just what I got out of it.

Soz corrected the lyrics now, looking back they were pretty rubbish! Anyway they're all cool now except the i'm a war/idle war part as I think it is idle war no matter what the booklet says.

I think this line...

"‘Cause that night, the sun in the tree
Made the sky line look like crooked teeth
In the mouth of a man who was devouring
Us both"

I think it's a reference to the Beatle's 'free as a bird video' in which the sky in the trees supposedly look like paul mccartney which added to the whole paul is dead thing, and of course then it leads to come together which could be why the songs called crooked teeth and there are a lot of beatley feels in the album

Nah. This is one of my favourite songs off plans, along with "I will follow you into the dark". I am unsure as to what it means yet, although I believe the line "You're so cute when you're slurring your speech, but they're closing the bar and they want us to leave" Is the greatest!

Musicians make songs, and lyrics are often added after the music, making them bear no more weight than the guitar riff. Ben, like Isaac Brock, is a writer who has the gift of finding an audience through music. Knowing that there's a story behind songs imbuies it with much more depth

This song ties with "I will follow you into the dark" and "some day you will be loved" for my favorite song on 'plans'. This is a fantastic cd. I really really love it.

personally, i think this song is about how a man and a woman had a relationship that was never really true, and more of lust than love.

"cause I built you a home in my heart with rotten wood that decayed from the start"

i think this means that he started a relationship that was so rocky and would never last.

"and you can't find nothing at all if there was nothing there all along
no you can't find nothing at all if there was nothing there all along"

i think this means that right before or after their break up he started to contimplate his love for her. then realized he had none for her, and never did.

thats just my theory. i suck at figuring out what songs mean, so this is probably about as close to the real meaning as a lizard is close to a toaster.

This is the most catchy song off the iffy Plans, but its got a really weak chorus. Its kinda a let down cos the verses and bridges (especially the "You're so cute when you're slurring your speech" bit) are great.

Think it may be about being in a relationship that you know won't work, but you stick at it for whatever reason you can, and thus there's "Nothing there at all"

Is it generally accepted that when he says "you're so cute when you're slurring your speech" he's mocking the person (assumedly girl) he's talking to? Cause that's what I got.

"you can't find nothing at all if there was nothing there all along" is trying to rebuild a relationship (and rekindle the love) that was never good to begin with.

In my opinion, the name says it all.
It's about imperfections.

Plus, I love the song. And Death Cab.
