I will promise myself I won't care
Distracting myself from your stare
And I've seen this mistake once before
With your games I will never fall for
I've hung up my guns
I won't kill again

I won't forget you
I'm not gonna let you win
But I'm tired of lying
Tired of fighting you
And it's not gonna change

You ask for my heart
You know that I'm down
But not the way you lie to me
You tear it all apart and beg for me to say
I sail off to sea
I'm not coming back

Counting down, make that sounds
And you know it makes no sense
Counting down, 'til you mess around
And I know you can't ever change
When I'm trembling, thrown overboard
And I'm ready to relive the past
Counting down, make that sounds
Break the silence

Pretend it's not forever
I'll pull myself together
I'll say that I'll forget her
I'll breathe
And I'll say she never hurt me
And look at it as learning
And laugh about the good and the bad
Because I won't live forever
We don't belong together
I know I'll feel better
One day when I can make it through

Song Meaning:actually in the lyric pamphlet from the special edition shane says "This song is the title track and ties in with the cover art and concept of the album artwork as a whole. The person on the front cover is torn between 2 situations. One is staying in the burning city behind him, a place he knows to be bad, and the other is to venture out into the watert a place that falls off into the unknown. This happens in many situations in life; whether it's a dead end job, a bad relationship, or a bad living situation, people need to realize that it's better to go into the unknown than stay in a place where they are unhappy and not progressing. This song is about getting through and realizing that things will not change by themselves. People need to take initiative in their own lives to be happy and successful"

General Comment:I really don't think this song tells one specific story. At the end of the day this song is about whatever it means to you. Personally this so is not only about a relationship with one person but perhaps many as in friendships and such. I will be getting a tattoo of the lyrics

    "Pretend it's not forever
    I'll pull myself together
I'll say that I'll forget you
    I'll breathe
And I'll say you never hurt me
And look at it as learning
And laugh about the good and the bad
    Because I won't live forever
    We don't belong together
    I know I'll feel better
One day when I can make it through
    I won't forget you"

As you can see I replaced the word "her" with "you" because for me it's about a lot of friends that I have that seem to come and go. I get attached to someone and then they're gone. This tattoo will be sort of like a foot note to myself to remember that I can't wallow in the past i gotta get up and move on but I don't have to forget about the good times we had and that i can learn from the while experience.

Song Meaning:This song is definitely about being in a relationship and realizing its going to end soon because you suspect their either going to cheat and your waiting to find out. or your waiting for THEM to break up with you, you'd rather them be the first to end it.

also somewhat in denial, telling yourself its going to be okay and this is a learning leason to just reassure yourself once it is over.

Song Meaning:This song is one of my favourites in the whole wide world. I believe its basically describing a break up, where the vocalist is talking about how hes dealing with the situation, hence the confusion and controdiction in the lyrics, talking about not caring, and then saying the girl hes in love with can see how hurt he is. With most relationships each break up is different, but the standard rule is to look like your so much better off and you dont miss them every second of the day, you dont wonder what they are doing, you dont cry when you hear that certain song or feel like your having a heartattack when you know the other person is having a fling with someone else. The saddest thing about this track is that you dont even need to listen to the lyrics to feel his pain because the tone of his voice literally drips with empathy and heartache. The song starts off strong and gradually he mellows and strains to keep his barriers up, with the end of the song coming back to a narrative equilibrium and his walls back up. Hes clearly no where near over her, but he doesnt understand who shes become, and he misses the way she used to be. Hes crying out for her to come and save him, but its clear she isnt going to come. ♥

General Comment:I love the very last bridge.
I write it over & over in my notebooks & then add
    I WILL FORGET YOU
really big at the bottom of the page.

I found this song before I had really been in a relationship, but I think it fits any badly-ending relationship pretty well.
The basic meaning is pretty obvios, but it's vague enough that you can change the little details to fit your situation perfectly.

    I love it. :]

General Comment:Favorite part of the whole song, i mean you just get down to this part

    Pretend it's not forever
    I'll pull myself together
I'll say that I'll forget her
    I'll breathe
And I'll say she never hurt me
And look at it as learning
And laugh about the good and the bad
    Because I won't live forever
    We don't belong together
    I know I'll feel better
One day when I can make it through"

I totally felt this at one point and at times i still do

General Comment:You all are partly right about the bad relationship, but there's more to it than that. In the book for the Special Edition the singer talks about the meanings of all the songs and here's what he says about Discovering The Waterfront.

"This song is the title track and ties in with the cover art and concept of the album artwork as a whole. The person on the front cover is torn between 2 situations. One is staying in the burning city behind him, a place he knows to be bad, and the other is to venture out into the water to a place that falls off into the unknown. This happens in many situations in life; whether it's a dead end job, a bad relationship, or a bad living situation, people need to realize that sometimes it's better to go into the unknown then to stay in a place where they are unhappy and not progressing. This song is about getting through that and realizing things will not change by themselves. People need to take initiative in their own lives to be happy and successful."

So it's much deeper than just that. It's still a completely amazing song, and probably my favorite on the album. :)
