And on the open road we came to a sign
For it was foretold that the weak would inherit
And nothing would change
Here we are at the crossroads, standing face to back
Still afraid to see our eyes
I feel helpless and alone, trapped on the third stone

Sitting here sideways on a cold stone floor
My guitar gently bleeding and wanting more
When I heard a sound come rapping, tapping on my door

Hello, I'm happy to meet you
In your confidence is it safe?
Sit down, I'm happy to greet you
To feed your greedy dog at the edge of the stage?
But before, before you slam the door
Tell me when, tell me why, tell me what this fucking life is for
We fly through this godless endeavor
We try to explain the black forever

I feel helpless and alone, trapped on the third stone
I feel permanently stoned, this godless endeavor the only cage I've known

Our organic equation has shown its flaw
Can we agree to disagree on the concept of God?
As I lifted up my brother he said to me
"Abandon naïve realism, surrender thought in cold precision"

I feel empty and deranged, denied one last epiphany and ushered from the stage

Thou shalt not question, the role of science is not to eliminate God
As alternative gods multiply science stands accused of theocide
Consume, conform
Consume, conform

The children sitting in the trees, they turn to laugh at me
They tell me that I'm insane, but in my mind I know I'm to blame
Alone within my lunacy, dementia fills the void within me
No testament, prayer or diseased lament can heal my wounds
They are so discontent

All the faithful fall onto their knees
And praise the priests of industrial disease

We contemplate oblivion as we resonate our dissonance
In godless random interpretation
The universe still expands, mankind still can't understand
How to define you, so hide your face and watch us exterminate ourselves over you
Welcome to the end my friend, the sky has opened

General Comment:I was raised atheist but became Christian over time. I have My own logical reasons to believe after some personal experiences. Although I don't completely agree with Warrel Dane, He does have some valid points regarding religion. People have done horrible, evil and ignorant things in the name of religion. As a Christian, I am very offended by the comments i've read by BLACKENED89. I'ts people like Him that make Christians look bad. Blackened89: If You are reading this, You have a lot of growing up to do. The Bible teaches us to love and respect one another despite their differences. So please refrain from trolling on every fucking lyrics page I try to enjoy.
Whether or not someone believes in God, or multiple gods has NOTHING to do with their intellect. I don't believe science will ever prove or disprove the existence of God or the supernatural.
Whether You're christian, atheist, muslim, jew, scientologist, hindu etc. the one thing We all have in common is the fact that We're all human beings. So let's start treating eachother like human beings.
    God Bless You All!!
    PEACE!!
P.S. Jeff Loomis is the shit

General Comment:I personally think that this song is a "conversation" between the "believer" and the "doubter" inside the same person. The conflicting points and explanations regarding life and everything.
Dane once again gave us a lyrical masterpiece.

General Comment:I agree with some of the comments so far. It is about one being disillusioned with science but also unwillingly to believe in any religion and entering a state of despair for being unable to find an answer. It ends with a note pointing out that only death will bring any answer at all.

My Interpretation:I think this song is about a guy who originally believes in evolution and science so strongly and completely shut out the idea of their being a God that that is all he knows. However, science can only answer his questions of existence to a certain extent and he begins to go insane because there are no answers. He feels himself being pulled toward God as the only explanation to fill the void, but since he is still so resistant to believe in God, he "fills the void with lunacy." At the end he is still kind of stuck in the middle, saying that science is just a random interpretation and is really just a search for God, but since they are so resistant to him, they blind themselves and search for a different answer (I'm not sure, though, when he says 'how to define you' if he is talking about God or about the universe). However, believing in God is too blind and he's not ready to make such a blind leap of faith.

I really like songs with lyrics that make you think and I like Nevermore's choice of words:

"the role of science is not to eliminate god" science is used to explain the world, but it was not designed as an alternative religion or to disprove the existence of God.

"I feel empty and deranged, denied one last epiphany and ushered from the stage" he wants to believe in God, but since he is used to logic and reason and doesn't want to make a blind leap of faith, he is hoping that God will appear to him and prove his existence.

My Interpretation:I find that the song is about the neverending war between science and religion and how people are torn over which side to choose. I think that might just be because I just read "Angels and Demons" though.

General Comment:AWESOME SONG!!! LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT!!! This is definetly my favorite Nevermore song. It has the best music, lyrics, vocals, and general structure of any Nevermore song. It is now definetly in my top 5 songs.

Lyrically, I interpret this song to simply be about nihilism, or the belief in nothing, and also, somewhat about misanthropy (fear and hatred of fellow humans) as well.

General Comment:I think some people over-analyze this. It's very simply and straight-forward. It just takes a sense of irony.

General Comment:In addition to everything stated above, this song really describes the idea of absurdism: the human condition is absurd in that it is ridiculous to look for meaning in a wold that simply exists, and nothing more. Absurdism is more than that, I would recommend reading ALbert Camus' The Stranger or his essay on The Myth of Sisyphus.

General Comment:I mainly agree to bananaphone05 with some exceptions:

    > "Our organic equation has shown its flaw"
    >
    >Answers people have made have no true basis. We
    >cannot find the answer.

I think it's more like traverse to people who say that science is their religion. This lines says "your equations, theories, and all other worth shit"
Or it may also be about perish of mankind.

    >“Abandon naive realism, surrender thought in cold precision”
    >seems to mean that what his "brother" is telling him to do is to
    >give up trying to find the answers he is looking for because his
    >"organic flaw" prevents him from doing so.

Or it may be turn into true belief. Don't dig into science, don't try to prove anything, to make crazy theories, just believe.

    >"Thou shalt not question, the role of science is not to eliminate
    >god
    >As alternative gods multiply science stands accused of theocide"
    >
    >Science does not eliminate your "God." It creates more gods
    >because god is mereley your explanation for the "black." As
    >more and more people create such explanations, "alternative
    >gods multiply." People think science is theocide because they
    >believe it eliminates god in people's beliefs. Instead, it just
    >changes their own description of god.

Great interpretation and explenation here.. : )

General Comment:i love this song. warrel dane can flat out sing... and jeff loomis is a monster of sweeps. not to mention, van willaims is a great drummer. too bad i can't hear jim in all of this.. the bass always seems to get buried on a lot of Nevermore's songs. and just thought i'd say... great lyrics, nevermore's lyrics are always very thought provoking.
