1)i agree with everyone on the whole breaking up thing. that DEF clearly works.
2)i also see it in another way...
i think it can also be about two people cheating or trying not to cheat. The singer wants to cheat (or has cheated) on their BF/GF with the person they are singing the song to. He has feelings for this person. He thinks its best that he doesn't talk to them anymore bc of the temptation and problems it can/will cause for him and his GF/BF. for example:

General Comment:In a Podcast interview with AP Magazine, Craig Owens revealed that the song "Baby, You Wouldn't Last a Minute on the Creek" is lyrically about Craig wanting to quit the band, not about the end of a relationship like majority assumed.
