Well you're magic he said
But don't let it all go to your head
Well I bet if you all had it all figured out
Then you'd never get out of bed
No doubt
All the thing's that I've read what he wrote me
Is now sounding like the man I was hoping
To be
Keep on keeping it real
Cause it keeps getting easier indeed
He's the reason that I'm laughing
Even if there's no one else
He said, you've got to love yourself

You say, you shouldn't mumble when you speak
But keep your tongue up in your cheek
And if you stumble on to
You better remember that it's humble that you seek
You got all the skill you need,
Individuality
You got something
Call it gumption
Call it anything you want
Because when you play the fool now
You're only fooling everyone else
You're learning to love yourself

There's no price to pay
When you give and what you take,
That's why it's easy to thank you
You

Let's say take a break from the day
And get back to the old garage
Because life's too short anyway
But at least it's better then average
As long as you got me
And I got you
You know we'll got a lot to go around
I'll be your friend
Your other brother
Another love to come and comfort you
And I'll keep reminding
If it's the only thing I ever do
I will always love
I will always love you
Yes you
I will always, always, always, always love
I will always, always love
I will always, always love, love

    General Comment:Hi everyone.

I just want to add my input regarding the bridge lyrics where it says there's no price to pay when you give it what you take. Isn't it "when you're given what you take" ? It makes a hell of a lot more sense cause it means that the friend jason is talking about gave him a lot of things bet it material or of other kinds, and so that's why it's easy to thank him for that.

    What do you think ?

General Comment:This is 8mins long, but I don;t get tired listening to this song.

It was just kinda frustrating that I have no brother to share this song with or a friend maybe, not even a father...what a shame.

General Comment:The very end of the song is my favorite part:

    Climb up over the top
Survey the state of the soul
You've got to find out for yourself
Whether or not you're truly trying
Why not give it a shot?
    Shake it, take control
Inevitably wind up finding for yourself
All the strengths that you have inside still rising
(All the strengths that you have inside of you)

    I think it's kinda self-explanitory...
but I also think it can be taken from a religious standpoint; do you really trust in God or are you just a poser? At the end of your life you'll find out who you really are on judgement day when you haven't used everything you have for God's will...
that's that last stanza from a religious stand; everyone else covered the rest of the song fairly well.

General Comment:this song has a lot of special meaning no matter what gender you are. to me it is just a song that expresses true love for a person. this love is not neccessarily a romantic kind of love, but it is one that shows that you will always be there for that other person.

an amazing song that has a great message

General Comment:Thanks for the interview quote, musictravelfun. That certainly sheds new light onto this song. That in mind, I think this song is about giving someone unconditional love no matter a person's orientation. Being a lesbian, I always found this a very empowering song about getting over depression and having someone to lean on.

General Comment:In a Dec 8th 05 interview with The Virginian-Pilot Jason responed this way to the song:

" Q. Are you aware you have a massive gay following?

    A. I did have an idea, and I dig that. A lot of my friends are gay – my roommate, my manager. The last song on my album, “Song for a Friend,” was written for my roommate, Jerry. I felt it might be a great idea. … There’s always love songs for women, but there should also be a love song for two bros, whether or not you’re gay. I’ve always tried to be open to all things. So it doesn’t surprise me that the gay community digs the mu-sac , ’cause I am friends with the gay community. "

...and yes I am a big fan of the man!
