No one ever said that life was fair and I'm not saying that it should be
So knowing that you are where you want to be and I'm not comes as no surprise
But don't expect me to be happy for you
And don't smile at me and tell me things will work out for me too
I don't want your pity, I hate your pity

Taste your vanity'
Its sweet bitterness as you hide behind your veil of my stolen hopes and lost dreams
You took them all'
I watched you steal my thoughts and had to see you smile

As you build your dreams on my shattered hopes
I'll look back on a day once loved and fantasize for tragedy

Beg me to make this easier and listen to my hopeless cries

Suffer alone in emptiness
I lust to see you swallowed by the mess that you left in your wake
Disgust lies deep within your empty gaze'

Beg me to make this easier and listen as my hopeless cries
Send stares into your meaningless eyes

My envy can't describe how I loathe you for having all the stars
Leaving my eyes to marvel the sky knowing it should be mine
Yet it's you I see wasting the dream that only I deserve
I'll tear off your face to see your smile

As you build your dreams on my shattered hopes
I'll look back on a day once loved and fantasize for tragedy

Hi, i'm Tory. I've always felt as all music has their own personal meaning to a person itself. You could say this song was about a flying turtle, or something. I, personally, see it as a break up. "No one ever said that life was fair, and i'm not saying that it should be. So knowing that you are where you want to be, and i'm not comes as no suprise. But don't expect me to be happy for you and don't smile at me and tell me things will work out for me too." I see that as the girl breaks up with this guy, finds another guy, and she is telling him that she will find someone too, but hes telling her he doesn't wanna hear it, and that hes not gonna be happy for her. I can totally relate to that, because i feel the same way about my ex boyfriend. "Taste your vanity and its sweet bitterness, as you hide behind your veil of my stolen hopes and lost dreams,I watched you steal my thoughts and had to see you smile ..You took them all..." He has to watch her be happy, but all he can think about her. "As you build your dreams on my shattered hopes, I'll look back on a day once loved and fantasize for tragedy." Shes doing the things he wished they were doing, and all he can think about is how things used to be between them. Suffer alone in emptiness "I lust to see you swallowed by the mess that you left in your wake, disgust lies deep within your empty gaze"He wants to see her hurt, like he is, and he wants to see her come back only to tell her no, and cause the same pain she caused him.

Just the way i saw it. :)

Warren wanted a Beach Boys thing for this one, and Carl Wilson and Billy Hinsche came in, with Carl arranging the vocal parts. The other harmony vocalists (credited as the "Gentlemen Boys") were Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther, Zevon's longtime backers Waddy Wachtel and Jorge Calderon, and Linda Rondstadt/Stone Poneys guitarist Kenny Edwards.

The Spy

Like a lot of the other comments are saying, I think this mainly about voyeurism. If the song was about his girlfriend, then why would he use the word spy. If you are a spy it means you shouldn't be caught, that is kind of the whole point, and if you are a voyeur, the whole point of the pleasure you get from it, is the fact that the other people don't know you are watching them. See a bit of a connection there?

Light Up The Sky
Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

Standing On The Edge Of Summer
Thursday
In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
