Returning The Smile You Have Had From Th... Lyrics
You wanted to know us
If it was for the pain that its caused us
For the lies, such a white lie
Don't know what it was to deserve this

As simple as I can
I'll tell you the difference
Between a pencil and a pen
And where it will leave us
Now as your body lets you die
And I sit here still alive

In my memory I wrote you down in ink
I never wanted to erase your story
Even with the tragedy it brings

The fluid in your lungs
That tells you you're losing
Stop breathing
the medicine that comes
Will fix you, will help you
But takes you from conscious to sleep
Place my hands to face and weep

In my memory I wrote you down in ink
I never wanted to erase your story
even with the tragedy it brings

Smiling, beautiful
Something torn from my hands

I'm not ready for you to die
(Can't tell what josh is screaming)

This day will end
With the lies complete
My closest friend
Here in front of me
(Can't tell what josh is screaming)

You wanted to know us
If it was for the pain that its caused us
For the lies, such a poor thing
Don't know what it was to deserve this

now for the actual lyrics...

You wanted to know if
If it was worth the pain that it has caused us.
Both our lives - subtract one life
To know why it was you deserved this

As simple as I can
I'll tell you the difference
Between a pencil and a pen
And where it will leave us now
As your body lets you die,
And I sit here still alive

In my memory I wrote you down in ink
I never wanted to erase your story
Even with the tragedy it brings

The fluid in your lungs
That tells you you're losing, stop breathing
The medicine that comes will fix you
Will help you but takes you from conscious to sleep
Place my hands to face and weep

In my memory I wrote you down in ink
I never wanted to erase your story
Even with the tragedy it brings

Something beautiful
Something torn from my hands

I'm not ready for you to die

(I can't leave here like this, get away from her)
This day will end with a life complete
(that is not all that she was. I don't want to say goodbye yet)
This day will end with a life complete
My closest friend here in front of me

You wanted to know if
If it was worth the pain that it has caused us.
Both our lives - subtract one life
To know why it was you deserved this

Latinorocker, you know when someone has cancer or is just dying away and they are emaciated and tired looking. It's just like remembering someone for what they were like when they were well as you currently see them looking horrible.

i remember seeing my grandma for the first time when i was younger after she really started to go downhill with alzheimer's, I remember what she was like before.

i love this song as much as i love Emery.
i saw them at warped tour 2005 and i had the chance to meet them, and it was awsome that i was talking with Josh and telling all that i feel for the band and he ask me for my name and i told him and he said: "oh i´m Josh, nice to meet you" and shaked my hand.
Half a year later i´m still excited

okay, i'm not sure on the meaning (although it's obviously about death) but from what I gather from the lyrics the narrator and a friend did something they weren't supposed to out of curiousity ("You want to know if it was worth all the pain that it caused us") then the friend dies and the narrator is asking why it wasn't him ("to know why it was you deserved this")

Where you said you couldn't understand what josh was screaming, I think it was this.

I'm not ready for you to die

(I can't leave here like this, get away from her)
This day will end with a life complete
(that is not all that she was. I don't want to say goodbye yet)
This day will end with a life complete
My closest friend here in front of me

I think this song is about death....someone he really cared about is dying of cancer or some other disease like that and he feels like guilt of being alive still......

also, each song title is an answer to THE QUESTION.

in the liner notes with the actual album, there is a question.

it reads:

Where were you when i was ...

you can add in any song title and it makes sense.

i.e. - Where were you when i was In a Win, Win Situation.

i think it is a brilliant concept.

Well, I think that this song is about a couple breaking up.
The difference between a pencil and a pen is the idea that she is erasing him from her memory, but he's keeping it ink, as it is referred to later.
I'll break down verse for verse.

"You wanted to know if
If it was worth the pain that it has caused us.
Both our lives - subtract one life
To know why it was you deserved this"

This is the breakup, they were dating, and they're not, one life is subtracted. Maybe he did something, so she's asking "Was what you did worth the pain?

"As simple as I can
I'll tell you the difference
Between a pencil and a pen
And where it will leave us now
As your body lets you die,
And I sit here still alive"

She's trying to erase him from her memory, and he's keeping it in. As result, she becomes very empty inside, depressed;;; dead. However, the man has learned from it and continues to be alive.

"In my memory I wrote you down in ink
I never wanted to erase your story
Even with the tragedy it brings"

Going further about the memory, elaborating on what he's saying by the difference between a pencil and a pen.

"The fluid in your lungs
That tells you you're losing, stop breathing
The medicine that comes will fix you
Will help you but takes you from conscious to sleep
Place my hands to face and weep"

This, i think, is a metaphor about anti-depressant (or the likes) pills. It saying you're dying, as in depresed or whatnot, you start taking the pills and it does make you feel better but it completely changes you, it makes YOU go from concious to sleep, and this change in the person makes the guy sad, he doesn't see the same thing, so he weeps.

"Something beautiful
Something torn from my hands
I'm not ready for you to die"

Something beautiful torn, is her breaking up with him, and he doesn't want it, so he's not ready for her to die.

"(I can't leave here like this, get away from her)
This day will end with a life complete
(that is not all that she was. I don't want to say goodbye yet)
This day will end with a life complete
My closest friend here in front of me"

He doesn't want to break up with her... and I think either the closest friend wants to date him, or the closest friend is going to date his ex...

Yep, that's my theory...

"You wanted to know if
If it was worth the pain that it has caused us."

I'm not sure what has happened here, (if it was worth the pain that it's caused us), but somebody did something, and wondering if it was worth it because pain was the result. Personally, I don't really know how to put it into words, but I'm thinking maybe they had a hint (or maybe even knew for sure?) that one of them was going to be diagnosed with a disease (such as cancer?) and might not make it through, but they started up a relationship together anyway. Probably way off, but whatever.

"Both our lives - subtract one life
To know why it was you deserved this"

They have a life together, but one is about to die, hence - subrtact one life.
Why is it she deserves this (death)?

"In my memory I wrote you down in ink
I never wanted to erase your story
Even with the tragedy it brings"

He tries hard to "write her down" in his memory so that he will never forget her. Think "permanent" (notice he says ink). He never wanted to erase her "story" (her story of life/her life/etc), even though it's such a tragedy now. (she's dying)

"The fluid in your lungs
That tells you you're losing, stop breathing
The medicine that comes will fix you
Will help you but takes you from conscious to sleep
Place my hands to face and weep"

We get a description of her dying in the hospital bed.
The medicine that's on its way will help with the pain she's having, but will cause her to fall asleep. He puts his hands to his face and cries.

"Something beautiful
Something torn from my hands

I'm not ready for you to die"

Description of her - she's the "something beautiful" which is being torn from his hands.

"(I can't leave here like this, get away from her)
(that is not all that she was. I don't want to say goodbye yet)"

Pretty straight-forward. He can't leave here like this, he can't get away from her. She was obviously very meaningful to him (she was more than that. that is not all that she was.), he doesn't want to say goodbye yet.

"This day will end with a life complete
My closest friend here in front of me"

He's telling us she DOES die. (This day will end with a life complete)
Her life is complete now, it's over - done with. His closest friend in front of him.

"You wanted to know if
If it was worth the pain that it has caused us.
Both our lives - subtract one life
To know why it was you deserved this"

So, was it worth beginning the relationship knowing there was a chance of this happening? (or, if I'm wrong on that, was it worth whatever had happened in the past.) Was it worth all this pain.
And, again, why did she deserve this?

That's my take.

Aight, here's what I get from this . . . I don't think it's about breakin up but it makes some sense so w/e, it works. I think it's about his like gf, wife, mom, someone important that's a female that is dying.

"You wanted to know if
If it was worth the pain that it has caused us.
Both our lives - subtract one life
To know why it was you deserved this"

K well having someone dying is an insane pain for both people, and someone dies of course, and they are wondering why they deserved this or what they did.

"As simple as I can
I'll tell you the difference
Between a pencil and a pen
And where it will leave us now
As your body lets you die,
And I sit here still alive"

This is why I don't think it's about breaking up; it's saying that pencils are erasable but pens aren't and the girl he's singing about is the pencil, he's the pen. She's dying (being erased) while he sits there still alive.

"In my memory I wrote you down in ink
I never wanted to erase your story
Even with the tragedy it brings"

I will never forget you, no matter how much pain and suffering thinking about you brings.

"The fluid in your lungs
That tells you you're losing, stop breathing
The medicine that comes will fix you
Will help you but takes you from conscious to sleep
Place my hands to face and weep"

There's probably some disease that I don't know about that has to do with having liquids in your lungs that she's dying of. The medicine to cure her will make her unconcious (or however you spell it) and she may die from that. That makes him sad because he like can't do anything to help her.

"Something beautiful
Something torn from my hands"

She is beautiful, but being taken away.

"I'm not ready for you to die"

Speaks for itself.

"(I can't leave here like this, get away from her)
This day will end with a life complete
(that is not all that she was. I don't want to say goodbye yet)
This day will end with a life complete"

I can't say goodbye, it's too much, she's amazing, etc.

"My closest friend here in front of me"

She was his closest friend.

Once again, that whole breaking up thing can work I guess, but this does too. I don't really know the true meanings but I guess no one but Emery does. Amazing song. K bye.

Ok the more I listen to this song, the more it becomes apparent to me that this song is about his closest friend or significant other is passing away from a disease such as alzheimers. He is in the hospital room by her side trying to remind her of who he is and what he means to hear. She is on her deathbed and he knows she won't make it through the day. At first I thought it was about a breakup, but alot of the lines in the song do not really go along with that.

I think the verse:

"As simple as I can
I'll tell you the difference
Between a pencil and a pen
And where it will leave us now
As your body lets you die,
And I sit here still alive

In my memory I wrote you down in ink
I never wanted to erase your story
Even with the tragedy it brings"

totally gives the alzheimers thing away. He is trying to explain to her how his memory has a permanent ink written account of his life with her and she has a pencil memory that erases their memories every day, whether she wants it to or not. And it is a tragedy that two people are in love are torn apart by a disease that neither of them have no control over. That to me is what the song is about.
