"And today was a day just like any other"

I'm on the verge, I'm on the verge
Unravelling with every word.
With every word you say, make me believe
That I won't feel your tires on the street

As I'm finding the words..
You're getting away...

I come undone, oh yes, I do
Just think of all the thoughts wasted on you
And every word you say, say something sweet
'Cause all I taste is blood between my teeth

As I'm finding the words..
You're getting away...
Well, I'm ready... I'm ready to drop
Oh, oh, oh, oh
I'm ready... I'm ready so don't stop
I'm ready, so don't stop
Keep pushing (don't stop me, I'm ready)
I'm ready to fall (don't stop me, I'm ready)
I'm ready (don't stop me, I'm ready)
I'm ready so don't call
I'm ready so don't call

I am aware I've been misled
I disconnect my heart, my head
Don't wanna recognize when things go bad
The things that you'll accept
Except that I am...

I'm finding the words to say I'm...
Ready, I'm ready to drop
Oh, oh, oh, oh
I'm ready... I'm ready so don't stop
I'm ready so don't stop.

I wake up to find it's another 4 aspirin morning and I dive in.
I put on the same clothes I wore yesterday.
When did society decide that we have to change
Or wash a T-shirt after every individual use?
If it's not dirty, I'm gonna wear it.
I take the stairs to the car and there's fog on the windows
(And I'm finding the words)
I need caffeine in my bloodstream
I take caffeine in the bloodstream
I grip the wheel and all at once I realize...
(And you're getting away)
My life has become a boring pop song and everyone's singing along

Well, I'm ready to drop...
Well, I'm ready, I'm ready so don't stop
Oh Oh Oh Oh
Well keep pushing, I'm ready to fall
Well I'm ready (don't stop me, I'm ready)
I'm ready so don't call (don't stop me, I'm ready)
Don't stop, I've already let go.
Don't stop me, I'm ready
Don't stop me, I've already let go...

General Comment:i know that this song isn's about his battle with cancer, because it was written before all that happened but it can sure be applied to that whole situation he went through. kind of ironic

My Interpretation:I completely agree with all of the ideas about this song being about ending a relationship. But for me, personally, i think it could also be about the start of a relationship, from a friendship. Or rather the narrator finally deciding that it is time to tell his close friend that he loves them, and wants to be with them.

    "Well, I'm ready to drop...
Well, I'm ready, I'm ready so don't stop
Well keep pushing, I'm ready to fall"

For me, this particular section of the song says that the narrator's friend has already made it clear that they love him, and even though deep down he loves the person back, he has never been able to admit it or has previously been confused about how he feels. But now, he is "ready" to tell them.

    "As I'm finding the words..
    You're getting away..."

I think this lyric shows that the narrator is aware that his friend won't wait around for him forever, whilst he is "finding the words" to tell them how he feels.

I think that the part of the song where the singer is talking shows that he is sick and tired of being in the same routine, and feels empty. This is because he is supressing feelings towards his friend. The line "my life has become a boring pop song and everyone's singing along" could suggest that all of his other friends believe he is in love with this person, and the only person who can't see this clearly is him - and all of his friends are "singing along" to his life. I think this lyric symbolises a turning point in his life, where he finally works out how he feels, and decides to tell his friend.

General Comment:Has anyone else considered that this song may be about suicide? the way i interpreted it, it's all about a guy whose last remaining connection to reality is this relationship he's in. when the other person ends it, he has nothing left to live for; he doesn't think the endless mundaneness of everyday life is worth it anymore. he's "ready" for it all to be over.

it starts off with "I'm on the verge". the verge of what? he then proceeds to talk about how everything in his life is "unraveling" as his significant other breaks up with him, hollowly reassuring him that he'll be ok and get over the whole thing: "make me believe, that i won't feel your tires on the street". amid thoughts of disdain of the relationship ("just think of every thought wasted on you"), he starts to question the validity of the rest of the world around him, everything he's built his life around. on this day, a "day just like any other" (presumably after the break up), he goes through the mundane actions that now define his life: waking up, taking aspirin/ caffeine, questioning the validity of society (the t-shirt monologue), all at once realizing that "my life has become a boring pop song and everyone's singing along". i kind of picture him walking up to the office of the dead-end cubible job that dictates his boring life, standing in front of it, and then getting back into the car.

This brings us to the main chorus of the song. At first I thought he was saying “I’m ready to drown” as opposed to “drop”; it really works either way though. Picture him driving in his car to the tallest building he can find, going to the top, andstanding at the edge. He’s “ready” to "drop/fall" off the side of his building; he’s “already let go” of all of the stupid, meaningless formalities of life. The significant other was the only thing that mattered for him; she’s the one that “keep[s] pushing” him to do this in his mind. No one can stop him (“don’t stop me”) by trying to call him (“don’t call”), begging him not to do it. He’s made his decision. He’s ready to leave behind this world, the rules that society has decided, the torturous similarity of every worthless day… there’s absolutely nothing left for him here.

This all may sound a little morbid, but honestly, every lyric can be related to this in the song: asking that his suicide be one of the “things that you accept”, his discontentment with his life stemming from the fact that he’s been “misled” by his significant other and society, etc. There are also a few allusions to the violent nature of suicide: “blood between my teeth”, “I disconnect my heart, my head”.

I’m sure he didn’t intend for the song to mean this; I mean he obviously didn’t kill himself. But looking at every lyric, it all just seems to add up. Maybe he was contemplating it or something, or maybe the lyrics were meant to mean something entirely different, I don’t know… but to me it will always be about someone escaping the life that they don’t want to live anymore.

such a great part of the song. i totally agree with these lines and i think that people should worry less about outside appearences and more about what's in their hearts and minds

General Comment:I love this song. This is EXACTLY what happened with my ex. I was so crazy about him, but we kept fighting. 2 years after the breakup we were STILL having the same fight, and at first, I felt like it was worth it.... but each time we had the same fight, I felt further and further away from him. I would try to reason with him, and each time he would disregard it. Then he would come back, and say he was sorry and how much I meant to him.... and I would forgive him... and he'd do it again.

This last time, something just clicked. And I realized that I'm ready... I'm ready to be done with him. I couldn't have cut him out of my life before (I tried, it didn't work), but now I feel like I can. I'm ready to "fall" out of love with him, I'm ready for him not to call. I'm ready to be done.

    This song is so eloquent.
