Brilliant tune, it's so catchy. Especially the 'They said it changes when the sun goes down' part.

This band are going to be big, they're already so popular and they only have 1 single out yet.

This song is now known as 'Sun Goes Down' which is a shame cos I like the name 'Scummy' . . .love the track as well. It's the best singalong track at their gigs.

can i point out that a lot of the lyrics are a bit out? like "they say HE changes when the sun goes down"
& "he TOLD roxanne to put on her red light"
don't mean to be picky but its such a GREAT song, musically & lyrically & i think we should all know it how it is :)

ps. this song means SUMMER to me... reminds me especially of reading festival- a whole tentfull of people singing along to an "unknown" band... just shows what giving out demos can do for a band!

Also, in the new version of this song (on the album) it says "Over the river going out the town in the last chorus so always changed that. The new version might be even better than the demo if that's possible..

i havn't seen the video, but peopel have said it does pretty much show my theory is right..
its about a pimp and his prossi, and how he's mistreating her, and just using her and basicaly being a 'scummy man'

its a great song, form a great band, who sound even better live than they do recorded

i agree with lukefun somewhat i understand protests songs coming from a teenage band from sheffield riding on the wave of this old skool rock phase just wudnt b right- but thts EXACTLY why this is is a band that should b taken as seriously as some of you are.

see some of you are making too much of their musical significance, significance of some the lyrics. yeah i like some of their tracks but no arctic monkeys wont last past the end of the year as least not in the way some bands have lasted generations, take bob dylan, pink floyd. fun bands like arctic monkeys r imo ruined by screaming girl fans who belive they are the next OASIS.

Did anyone hear them perform in the live lounge on BBC Radio 1 for jo whiley? They did a cover of "love machine" by girls aloud and it was the funniest thing ive ever heard a band do on radio. AWESOME

It was right next to the red light district and when they were leaving at night they used to see scummy men going in with paper bags of unidentifiable stuff. That's what they say its about, or at least what I remember they say its about.
