Well, I've had this secret
And I feel it's time that you should know
When I'm in your arms, it turns me on
But I've got a conscience, too
And it says my heart's never in tune
With anything I do

So, this is the last time that I'll hold your hand
I want to kiss you on the mouth and tell you,
"I'm your biggest fan."
I'm your biggest fan

I've had this secret
And now it's time that you should know
I was wrong to string you along
Circulating the streets in the pulsating heat
I scoured your town, completely aroused
Making love to your memory

So, this is the last time that I'll hold your hand
I want to kiss you on the mouth and tell you,
"I'm your biggest fan."
This is the last time that I'll hold your hand
I want to kiss you on the mouth and tell you,
"I'm your biggest fan."

Sad minion of mine
Don't be so unkind
I know I stole your coat
You can have the song I wrote
I've just crossed the line
From fashion to crime
But it's such a perfect fit
When I am wearing it
Sad minion of mine
Don't be so unkind
I know I stole your coat
You can have the song I wrote
I've just crossed the line
From fashion to crime

So, this is the last time that I'll hold your hand
I want to kiss you on the mouth and tell you,
"I'm your biggest fan."
This is the last time that I'll hold your hand
I want to kiss you on the mouth and tell you,
"I'm your biggest fan."
This is the last time that I'll hold your hand
I want to kiss you on the mouth and tell you,
"I'm your biggest fan."
I'm your biggest fan

General Comment:My interpretation seems a little bit different from anyone else’s, but I’ll give it a try anyway. I’ll start with a pop culture reference: The May 6, 2008 headline read, “Lindsay Lohan stole my coat.” This reminded me of the song when it says, “I know I stole your coat; you can have this song I wrote.” (I know that this song was released before this headline occurred; I’m using it for demonstration purposes, not saying that Lindsay Lohan inspired the song.) This song describes the way the life of a pop star or touring musician or otherwise famous person can ultimately deteriorate into delusion and emotional destruction.

It is well known that fame destroyed Lindsay Lohan both emotionally and physically to the point where she became basically just a running joke in the media. She forgot how to have normal relationships with people and got lost in her own world of materialism and other things that come along with being rich and famous. The song reflects the same idea when it says, “I want to kiss you on the mouth and tell you I’m your biggest fan.” Clearly the singer of the song has lost the capability of having a real, deep romantic relationship beyond just the superficiality of “when I’m in your arms, it turns me on.” Basically, the singer’s own relationship with this girl is based on many of the things that also gave Lindsay Lohan validation; materialism, sex, and being idolized by others.

The next verse goes further, saying that the singer is “making love to your memory.” In the same way that Lohan is viewed as a fallen star in the media, so also does this singer feel about his past relationship. The media looked at Lohan and idolized her memory, even though she was far from perfect in the past. This is exactly what the singer is doing to his old relationship; idolizing it, because he wants to believe that there was, at some point, something there that he can still cherish in his mind, regardless of how false his beliefs might be.

Then, the singer says that “I’ve just crossed the line from fashion to crime.” While Lohan was once a pop icon, a trend, she slowly deteriorated to the point where she was doing drugs, stealing people’s things (such as coats), and otherwise becoming less of a fad and more of a criminal. This is exactly what the singer is describing in his life.

Therefore, this song is really just a reflection on what can happen when fame goes to your head. Perhaps it was the lead singer thinking about what the growing fame of his band was doing to his life. I do not think that this song is about Lindsay Lohan; rather, it uses similar language, such as the language used in the cases of many fallen pop stars, so that Brandon Reilly can describe his own life and how his career path has affected his relationships.

General Comment:This song kind of depresses me. I agree with cutiebear. As an addition to the "I've just crossed the line from fashion to crime, but it's such a perfect fit when I am wearing it" I think he's saying that although them being together looks good, he ultimately hurts her because he doesn't feel exactly that way, or something like that. I dunno

My Interpretation:For me, this has always been about the guy being with the girl initially for some selfish reason, maybe as arm candy or for her reputation or whatever, and they split up for whatever reason, and now he doesn'thave her he realises he's made a horrible mistake and should never have let her go, and he likes her more than he thought.
'I've had this secret...' is his way of saying that that was what he used to think, and maybe that's why he didn't treat her as he should first time round, but now he wants her back. 'I wanna kiss you on the mouth and tell you I'm your biggest fan' is basically just saying 'I want you back, I love you'.
This is how I've always thought of this song. I absolutely adore it.

General Comment:Basically, I think he does love her (or him), but he feels that he needs to end it, because he either doesn't love her in THAT way, or because he doesn't love her as much as she loves him.

General Comment:idk i don't think it's him not loving her. i think he dearly loves her, but doesn't want to hold her back from anything. and the whole stealing her coat part, i think it's kind of like he stole her time per-say and now he wants to let her go

General Comment:Well Morrissey influences many people (I used to be a massive fan!), but at the same time, many people use the phrase 'My name is trouble'. I'm not sure - we need a few more references!!

General Comment:I have a theory on the coat part of the song. Lol.

I think the song is basically about a guy who is sexually attracted to the girl, but they are in a "boyfriend-girlfriend" relationship where there is supposed to be feelings of love there. However, he doesn't have that. He just really wants her sex.

I'll break the coat part down part-by-part.

    "Sad minion of mine
    Don’t be so unkind
I know I stole your coat
You can have the song I wrote"

I take "I know I stole your coat" to mean "I know I took your clothes off." They probably chose coat because it usually is seen as protective, but he took it off and had sex with her, taking away her emotional protection and hurting her. He is trying to apologize by writing a song about his feelings. He is basically saying "Don't be mad at me. I know I had sex with you, but let me explain why..."

    "I’ve just crossed the line
    From fashion to crime"

He is basically saying that taking off her coat was not an innocent move (for "fashion's" sake), he did it so she's have less clothes and want to have sex with him (even though he knows he doesn't love her... making it a "crime")

"But it’s such a perfect fit
    When I am wearing it"

It is hard to feel sorry about it because the sex felt really good. Aka, he liked taking off her "coat" (emotional protection) and having control over it himself (by 'wearing it') because it allowed them to have sex.

I don't know, this might be way off, but it seems to make sense in context.
