it’s hard to believe
i cannot exist without you
as hard as i’ve tried
i cannot confess completely
these words will lament you
and do sorts of likewise behavior
it’s just part of the curse
i’m just trying to stay alive

are you out there
are you listening at all
are you out there
are you listening
to anything i’ve said

it’s hard to admit
my weaknesses can consume me
i search for the cure
in the bottles of buried volumes
the joke of it is
i express myself without purpose
yet you devour my smallness
the madness to make believe

if i can pretend, i don’t depend
i can deny, deny, denial
yet when push comes to shove
and all the above
i decide to live the lie

General Comment:Yeah definately "inspired by" not inherently about invisible monsters. Justin (as of lately)seems to enjoy taking pop culture media names (books, movies) and writing songs that have little to do with them. I think it's just kinda like a shoutout he gives by using a title of something he likes.

    General Comment:huh.
I didn't notice it on here before, but I always thought in the first verse, the line was, "these words were not meant to induce acts of likewise behavior," not "these words will lament you and do sorts of likewise behavior."
    maybe it's just me.

General Comment:I see similarities... The deciding to live a lie, for example. And all the parts about medicine.

I think it may have been influenced by the book, but i don't know if it's actually about it. If it is, its definitely in a more subtle way than Time to Dance by Panic! at the Disco.

General Comment:everyone made a great point on saying they think Justin is imagining himself as Shannon, but i really think the song is directly about the book

    "i search for the cure
in the bottles of buried volumes"
    - the various drugs Shannon steals..

    the joke of it is
    i express myself without purpose
    - Brandy Alexander had all the operations just to express himself. he didn't really want to be a woman, hense 'without purpose'

General Comment:I have to agree. While the song may borrow very basic motifs and ideas from Invisible Monsters I think it can be applied to anyone who stays attached to a person or event in their lives and struggles to move forward & take responsibility.
"It's hard to believe I cannot exist without you."

General Comment:i think it's all about depression, anxiety, and paranoia...

when he says "its hard to believe i cannot exist without you" i think he's talking about depression and anxiety and all that..

"are you out there are you listening at all"
i think that part is about paranoia.

    "it’s hard to admit
    my weaknesses can consume me
    i search for the cure
in the bottles of buried volumes
    the joke of it is
    i express myself without purpose
    yet you devour my smallness
    the madness to make believe"
I think that's about trying to find a cure for his depression/anixety/paranoia/etc. through pills & medicines.
