What if I wanted to break
Laugh it all off in your face
What would you do?
What if I fell to the floor
Couldn't take all this anymore
What would you do, do, do?
Come, break me down
Bury me, bury me
I am finished with you
What if I wanted to fight
Beg for the rest of my life
What would you do?
You say you wanted more
What are you waiting for?
I'm not running from you
Come, break me down
Bury me, bury me
I am finished with you
Look in my eyes
You're killing me, killing me
All I wanted was you
I tried to be someone else
But nothing seemed to change
I know now, this is who I really am inside
I've finally found myself
Fighting for a chance
I know now, this is who I really am
Come, break me down
Bury me, bury me
I am finished with you, you, you
Look in my eyes
You're killing me, killing me
All I wanted was you
Come, break me down
Break me down
Break me down
What if I wanted to break
What if I, what if I, what if I (bury me, bury me)
Laugh it all off in your face
What would you do?
What if I fell to the floor
Couldn't take all this anymore
What would you do, do, do?
Come, break me down
Bury me, bury me
I am finished with you
What if I wanted to fight
Beg for the rest of my life
What would you do?
You say you wanted more
What are you waiting for?
I'm not running from you
Come, break me down
Bury me, bury me
I am finished with you
Look in my eyes
You're killing me, killing me
All I wanted was you
I tried to be someone else
But nothing seemed to change
I know now, this is who I really am inside
I've finally found myself
Fighting for a chance
I know now, this is who I really am
Come, break me down
Bury me, bury me
I am finished with you, you, you
Look in my eyes
You're killing me, killing me
All I wanted was you
Come, break me down
Break me down
Break me down
What if I wanted to break
What if I, what if I, what if I (bury me, bury me)

On the meaning of the song, Jared states: "Most people would think of it as describing a relationship with someone, an unhealthy relationship, but really the song is about a relationship with yourself... and how we eventually gain the confidence to fight the "demon" version of ourself. It's about finding who we really are."
In the video Jared is seen having a violent confrontation with himself, Tomo witnesses himself partaking in sexual relations with a person in a bunny costume (lol), Matt realizes that the bartender is a version of him and Shannon is seduced.
It is noteworthy that this song, or any of the Mars songs do not elaborate on Jared's past relationships, especially his engagement with Cameron Diaz. He is the sole songwriter of the band and a private person :)
If you think about it, this song could also be about him breaking off of his fake him, leaving the fake him behind, killing it and becoming his real self..
I like to take it both ways because I can connect on both levels. Knowing that trying to be someone you're not isn't going to work neither for your partner nor for you (even if he/she falls in love than, its not you whom he/she loves but the fake you and also you might try to be the one you wanted to be, but you're not that person anyway)..
What if I wanted to break
Laugh it all off in your face
What would you do
Wanted to break. Like breaking away from what he used to be.
Come break me down
Bury me, bury me
I am finished with you
Come break me down. Like breaking down and wanting to change.
Bury me, bury me. Bury my old self.
I am finished with you. Finished with who I used to be.
I tried to be someone else
But nothing seemed to change
I know now this is who I really am inside
Finally found myself
Fighting for a chance
I know now this is who I really am.
I tried to be someone else. Figuring out who he wants to be
But nothing seemed to change. Couldn't figure it out
I know now this is who I really am inside. Realizing he doesn't have to change
Finally found myself. Now he knows
Fighting for a chance. Trying to make people realize he's changed
I know now this is who I really am. Again now he knows.
Reading the lyrics up there does actually allow me to see that maybe there was a relationship but... This band is different. They're good. They don't create the usual crap that people make about relationships and sex. They're good.
It's sort of obvious, because in the video he is actually confronting himself.
