--The guy is amazed at how the girl can "lift the heavy bricks and build a path for him to walk on" so he can come back to her. She is dealing with the pain of the break up and at the same time working on getting him back. She is "carving herself in the stones", she believes that they will be together forever (as if she is carving herself permanatly into his life). Despite the fact that "her skin is still as thin as his." she is still dealing with the pain of the breakup.
He does'nt understand how she believes the things that she believes (the fact that everything will be okay, and that they will get back together). He thinks he should listen more carefully so he can understand her beliefs.
