Lyrics for Boston as interpreted by helenrips

Boston Lyrics
In the light of the sun
Is there anyone?
Oh it has begun
Oh dear, you look so lost
Eyes are red and tears are shed
Some world you must have crossed

You said, You don’t know me
You don’t even care
Oh yeah
She said, you don’t know me
You don’t wear my chains
Oh yeah - yeah

The essential yet appealed
Carry all your thoughts cross an open field
When flowers gaze at you
They’re not the only ones
Who cry when they see you

You said, You don’t know me
You don’t even care
Oh yeah
She said, you don’t know me
You don’t wear my chains
Oh yeah

She said, I think I’m going to Boston
I think I’ll start a new life
I think I’ll start it over
No one knows my name
I’ll get out of California
I’m tired of the weather
I think I’ll get a lover
I’ll fly ‘em out to Spain

I think I’m going to Boston
I think that I’m just tired
I think I need a new town
To leave this all behind
I think I need a sunrise
I’m tired of the sunset
Here it’s nice in the summer
Some snow would be nice
Oh yeah

Boston
No one knows my name
Yeah
No one knows my name
No one knows my name…

Boston
No one knows my name

My best friend gave me a meaning for this song. It was weird the song played and the radio and we just closed our eyes listening to the piano...and she told me...

This song is about a person who wants to start a new life. This other person is treating them like nothing, and that person has no idea what they're going through, you don't see what I see, you don't hear what I hear...you don't know my point of view. And then the person just packs up and leaves, someone where nobody knows who I am...where you're not in my world. Because I'm tired of the way you treat me.

This song makes me cry in the right moments. This song can never get old. =)

I loved this song from the moment I heard it two years ago, but then it got so overplayed. Anyway, it's a gorgeous song nonetheless. My favorite part is " you don't know me you don't even care, you don't know me, you dont wear my chains" --you don't know me, you won't take the time to understand why I am the way I am, but you don't know what holds me back, so don't judge me. Bascially the song is about wanting to change your life. For some changing location might solve your problems, but like nylentone said sometimes the problem is yourself, and running won' t make things better your problems will follow you, so in that case where you are physically doesn't matter you have to change yourself; break away from whatever it may be that ties us down (like aleashax3 said something bad that happened in your past or just chains you gave yourself). This song is actually pretty inspirational. The video is also beautiful, well to me anyway, the ocean and waves are one of my favorite things. "I think I’ll start a new life
I think I’ll start it over where No one knows my name" aaah...the beauty of anonymity sometimes, where no one knows you, or better yet thinks they "know you".

I absolutely adore this song. I heard it last year and then took my first trip to Boston a few weeks later (coincidentaly). I fell in love. Now, I'm going to college at Lesley University in Cambridge this coming fall and as I listen to this song I can't help but get emotional. I can't wait to get out of this town. "I think I'll go to Boston..."

I've only ever visited California, but I have lived in New England my whole life and i can say it is a perfect escape with plenty of change. Heck the weather changes every 5 minutes, but personally I'm not too fond of Boston, its still too big city for me, I like the quiet hometown.

i LOVE this song. I think everyone gets to the point when they think, "I wish i could just move far far away and start over." I wouldn't mind a fresh peice of paper myself. I think everyone: young and old can relate to this song. You do something embarassing, bad, or just get sick of the same thing every day and you want a change.

WOW!!! This is one of the most beautiful, yet saddest songs I have heard in years. Hats off to lead singer Dan Layus for conveying such serious emotion throughout the song and congratulations to the rest of the band for doing a great job with the instrumentals. Here's my take on the opening verses.

"In the light of the sun
Is there anyone?
Oh it has begun
Oh dear, you look so lost
Eyes are red and tears are shed
Some world you must have crossed"

Out of the darkness of his relationship, he’s asking his lover if someone has come between them. Has the breakup just begun? He then describes how she looked when she started conveying the pain and emotion she’s been feeling. He’s wondering if she’s left his world.

“You said, You don’t know me
You don’t even care
Oh yeah
She said, you don’t know me
You don’t wear my chains
Oh yeah – yeah”

This section appears twice, indicating the main reason for the breakup. He must have said something really bad to hurt her. It tells me that he’s into the relationship to better himself, not her, and hasn’t really listened to what she’s been trying to tell him about herself over and over again. To me, the part about wearing my chains indicates some type of burden or addiction she has that he can’t understand, and therefore, he can’t or won’t help her deal with it.

“The essential yet appealed

Very confusing … it sounds like he’s trying to rationalize his or her thoughts and those that take pity on her for her illness or addiction. I have ready all of your comments on this and don’t think anyone has quite figured it out yet. Any Poets in the crowd?

Damn, this section shakes me off my feet! You can’t just read it and begin to understand what it means unless you have listened to the emotion that Dan sings/cries. Dan sounds like he’s lost the love of his life and his she’s ripped out his heart in the process. Who’s crossing worlds now Dan? The main line here is “No one knows my name”. She has a reputation with everyone around her and she wants to go somewhere where absolutely no one knows her history. A desperate situation often calls for a desperate move.

I agree with past comments indicating that these are all excuses for leaving the relationship and getting as far away from it as she can without having a passport. I found the music video strange. Does anyone see any significance to it? All I got from it is that there is danger to staying in one place too long, especially when the surf comes in.

I can guarentee whatever I'm about to say has already been said in one way or another, but that's okay.

For me, this song means letting go- just letting go of all the sh*t in life and looking for a new start. Not forgetting, just forgiving and moving on. I know that for me, change is possibly the worst thing in the world but I also know that it is more than necessary to change, even in the slightest way just to grow a little bit. And I think the girl that the song is about knows that too-- she's so sick of being with the same people day after day and dealing with them and their issues without being able to truly deal with herself. That, and she feels like none of them really know her for who she is. She just needs to start over, see something new where no one knows her name and it's okay for her to be herself.

i think i go to "boston" everytime i fuck things over where i am at the moment. this is such a relatable song. everyone has a place where they can go when things suck where they are. for me, thats my hometown. i just og there in the summer, when things at college usually start going downhill. and at the end of summer (which usually ends badly with shitty family BS) I can come back to college and do the whole cycle over again.

This song to me is where you go when you're sick of it all and you can get away from stuff that bugs you. Not necessarily a place but maybe a state of mind. But for me this place is for sure back to my college town and away from my hometown. And then from there into my music and sports.

Of course, every song means something different to everyone.

For me, I see it this way: There are two people in the song. One is the singer, who is telling a story. The other is the girl that left him for Boston. The singer is repeating to himself the last words that the person who left had said to him, as the reason for leaving.

She said, "I think I'll go to Boston, to get out of California, because you don't know me, and you don't wear my chains."

She left because she couldn't take it anymore, and thought that he couldn't understand her. I don't totally buy the idea that she left just to start over, because it just doesn't ring true to me that a Californian is tired of the weather. No matter how nice Boston is in summer, it certainly can't compare with Californian weather.

In addition, she says "I think I'll get a lover and fly them out to Spain" as if that were something easy. Rather, it sounds to me as if she's trying to make him jealous. Anyway, that's how I see it.

She's leaving, because she said I don't know her, or wear her chains.
