Lyrics for Boston as interpreted by helenrips

Boston Lyrics
In the light of the sun
Is there anyone?
Oh it has begun
Oh dear, you look so lost
Eyes are red and tears are shed
Some world you must have crossed

You said, You don’t know me
You don’t even care
Oh yeah
She said, you don’t know me
You don’t wear my chains
Oh yeah - yeah

The essential yet appealed
Carry all your thoughts cross an open field
When flowers gaze at you
They’re not the only ones
Who cry when they see you

You said, You don’t know me
You don’t even care
Oh yeah
She said, you don’t know me
You don’t wear my chains
Oh yeah

She said, I think I’m going to Boston
I think I’ll start a new life
I think I’ll start it over
No one knows my name
I’ll get out of California
I’m tired of the weather
I think I’ll get a lover
I’ll fly ‘em out to Spain

I think I’m going to Boston
I think that I’m just tired
I think I need a new town
To leave this all behind
I think I need a sunrise
I’m tired of the sunset
Here it’s nice in the summer
Some snow would be nice
Oh yeah

Boston
No one knows my name
Yeah
No one knows my name
No one knows my name…

Boston
No one knows my name

This hauntingly beautiful song is anchored by the repetitive phrase "...where no one knows my name". I love the ironic twist on the old theme song from "Cheers", a place "where everybody knows your name".

I also admire, "I think I need a sunrise, I'm tired of Sunset". The line's loaded with symbolism. First, there's the literal meaning of someone making a drastic life change that will take her all the way across the country, to another coastline. Second, a sunrise is a metaphor for hope, optimism, and a new beginning. Third, "Sunset" refers to Sunset Boulevard, the Sunset Strip, and everything else about the subject's miserable life in California, soon to be left behind.

This song is my favorite song right now. I am a piano player, so i adore the music itself. But the lyrics are perfect for me. Really, i think they can be for any person. And, it does seem to apply to a girls significant other, but i think its also very possible she is just singing to a friend. I think anyone can relate to this because a lot of people just don't feel understood, and this hurts. I think the chains that the artist speaks of could be anything, whether it be something terrible that happened in your past or just the chains you gave yourself (not believing in yourself, etc.). It's about beginning again too, which i think all of us long for sometimes.

Just an amazing song period :)

i dont really see any direct reference to a romantic relationship here, i think it definetly COULD be a bf/gf kind of thing, but it could also be about realy good friends. the girl is really depressed, and thinks no one understands her, and wants to leave california for boston.
the line "I think I need a sunrise, I’m tired of the sunset" is probably my favorite. Even tho most people like sunsets, because they're so beautiful, she is tired of conventional beauty, tired of all the glamour of california, and wants to go somewhere where the sun is rising. She wants a new beginning.
i LOVE this song. i think almost everyone can relate to it. The girl in the song feels so hopelessly entangled, everyone around her has known her forever, they know all about a past she'd rather forget. She needs a new city, a new place, where she can truly start all over.
also, i'm kinda confused, does any1 have any theories as to wat "The essential yet appealed, Carry all your thoughts cross an open field" means????

In the light of the sun

Oh it has begun
Oh dear, you look so lost

Have you ever woken up from a dream and been disapointed that your life is not what it was in the dream? The first whole verse of this song gives me that feeling.

I just saw these guys open for the Goo Goo Dolls and they were awesome. And if I didn't know better I'd swear this song was written about me...Boston is my favorite city in the whole world, and so many times when I'm bogged down by college and friends and work I'm just like "I wanna move to Boston and start over." Then this song comes out and pretty much takes my thoughts and puts them into song lyrics. A-mazing.

a few lines aren't right.

"some world you must have crossed"
should be "this world you must've crossed"

"I think I'm going to Boston"
should be "I think I'll go to Boston"

"no one knows my name"
should be "where no one knows my name"

"here it's nice in the summer"
should be "I hear it's nice in the summer"

little changes, but it really does change a bit of the meaning in the song.

I think that this song is about being so upset about your life, and having people look down on you for it which just makes it worse, because they have no idea what you're going through, and you just want to get away from it all.

It's obvious what this song is about. He's upset cause nobody knows his name so he wants to go to Boston. Boston was where the "cheers" bar takes place. What was the "cheers" theme song? "Where everybody knows your name" Exactly. He wants to go where everybody knows his name. That's what I think this song is about.

I love this song...I think the meaning is pretty obvious, but it can be interpreted differently depending on how you relate to it. Basically, he's fed up with everything in his hometown, his relationship has grown stagnant, he feels out of place...he just wants to start fresh.

why is everyone saying he?
it says "she said"
it's a girl. read the lyrics.

& she wants to go to boston to be unknown. ("where no one knows my name") not where everyone knows about her & her life.

i just recently heard this song.and it is my life. Well with some changes. First i am a guy and instead of going from cali to boston, i moved from PA to Phoenix,AZ. I was tired of the weather, had just gotten out of a 4 yr relationship and i needed a new town to leave it all behind. "I think I need a sunrise
I’m tired of the sunset" This lyric really hits me deep as well.I moved back home and i still feel the same way, its been over two years and im still waiting on that sunset. And the intro piano solo is amazing.

this song obviously means something to everyone at one point in anyones life. we all feel at some point that we are misunderstood and want to move away to 'boston'. this song has a great melody and the lyrics are absolutely captivating. 'i think i need a sunrise, im tired of the sunset' the best line in the song :P

from there on, it's a metaphor, open field = life/society/social medium she is a part of. she's beautiful, and although she thinks no one can help her, no one understands her, there are others out there who do, most notably the author.
----------------------------
"You said, You don’t know me
You don’t even care
Oh yeah
She said, you don’t know me
You don’t wear my chains
Oh yeah"
----------------------------
but yeah, she doesn't want to open up to him, blah blah...
----------------------------
"She said, I think I’m going to Boston
I think I’ll start a new life
I think I’ll start it over
No one knows my name
I’ll get out of California
I’m tired of the weather
I think I’ll get a lover
I’ll fly ‘em out to Spain"
----------------------------
this part is weird, because i believe that the "She said" part was an outro for the chorus, and NOT a part of this section. starting with "I think I'm going to Boston," the narrative shifts towards the author. he's had enough with this life he's leading, it's disappointing, he's made too many mistakes, and he simply wants to start over. PERHAPS this is to do with the girl who's mentioned before. he's trying to get her out of his head, and the only way he sees of doing so is to move away and start all over, find someone new.

tired of the sunset and would prefer a sunrise, obviously refers to start new. if before he constantly felt like his life was coming to an end, there was no light, nothing good in it, now he wants to start again, blah blah you get the point
----------------------------
"Boston
No one knows my name
Yeah

self explanatory

great song, the older EP version is infinitely better recorded than the newer album one, so Limewire it if u must. took a while to get this one off repeat the first time i heard it...

Whoops, messed up my pasting... here's the whole post:

the majority of the song is sung about the girl/from the girl's perspective...

----------------------------
"In the light of the sun
Is there anyone?
Oh it has begun
Oh dear, you look so lost
Eyes are red and tears are shed
Some world you must have crossed "
----------------------------
she is obviously going through something and the guy sees her pain, but when he asks her what's wrong, she says,
----------------------------
"You said, You don’t know me
You don’t even care
Oh yeah
She said, you don’t know me
You don’t wear my chains
Oh yeah - yeah"
----------------------------
she can't open up to him, she tells him that he knows nothing about her, don't understand the pressure/whatever she's under ("you don't wear my chains")
----------------------------
"The essential yet appealed
Carry all your thoughts cross an open field
When flowers gaze at you
They’re not the only ones
Who cry when they see you"
----------------------------
first line i believe is meant to say that she needs him, he's essential AND appealed, but she doesn't realize it.
from there on, it's a metaphor, open field = life/society/social medium she is a part of. she's beautiful, and although she thinks no one can help her, no one understands her, there are others out there who do, most notably the author.
----------------------------

No one knows my name

My friend made the point that this song could possibly be about gay marriage and after thinking about it, it is possible.

Gay marriage was legal in California for a short time but then nulified and now people are flocking to Boston, MA where gay marriage is legal.

I personally like this song and Augustana all right, but I just thought it was an interesting outlook.
