Distant earthrise long ago
lingers at the borders of our minds
mysteries spinning in the dark
in the frozen emptiness of time
we were lost and we never knew
who we were or what we left behind
living half-lives we were blind
to the new frontiers that opened up our eyes
to find our minds were spinning
souls entwined in a spiral dance
the ancient ways have found us
again to give us one last chaaaaaaance

living in this place
staring into space we find
we might share the corners of our lives
infinity runs deep
eternity that we can keep
melting through the frozen wastes of time

so we go and we'll not return
to navigate the seas of the sun
our children will go on and on
to navigate the seas of the sun
so we go and we'll not return
we'll navigate the seas of the sun
our children will go on and on
to navigate the seas of the sun

we can go on tomorrow
living death by gravity
couldn't stand it anymore
we'll sail our ships to distant shores

purple gold and blue
living colors every hue
flowers in the garden of the gods
no one can ever know
if you never saw them grow
but this darkness is really full of light

[solos]

now beyond the earth
beyond all things that gave us birth
we'll navigate...
if god is throwing dice
and einstein doesn't mind the chance
we'll navigate...
infinity runs deep
eternity that we can keep
we'll navigate...
flowers of our souls
purple blue and gold we'll find
to navigate...
so we know who we are
even in this frozen waste
we'll navigate...
living in this place
staring into space we'll find
we'll navigate...
well beyond the earth
beyond all things that gave us birth
we'll...
if einstein's throwing dice
and god he doesn't mind the chance
we'll navigate...
flowers of the soul
purple blue and gold
and who we were before
eternity...
we'll navigate...
flowers of the soul

    My Interpretation:Amazing.

"living death by gravity" - the feeling that the gravity that keeps on Earth is too confining

"If god is throwing dice, and Einstein doesn't mind the chance"
"If Einstein is throwing dice, and God doesn't mind the chance"

A play on the famous "God does not play dice" quote by Einstein. In the original quote, Einstein was expressing his skepticism over quantum science, by saying that the laws of physics are deterministic and nonrandom. Here it means something different, I think simply that religion and science don't know what to expect out there in space, but neither objects to exploration.

"Purple, gold and blue" - gsuryalss.wordpress.com/2011/01/10/dwarf-galaxy-harbors-supermassive-black-hole/

General Comment:I agree most with Journeyman. There's no way this is about a relationship. I can't hear that at all.

    This song is addicting.

General Comment:There is nothing in this song that suggests a relationship. Einstein suggests a relationship ending more than space travel? I don't believe there is anything simple about this song.

General Comment:I'm sorry, but all the people on here who are convinced this song is just about space travel need to listen a little more deeply to lyrics...

I mean, Bruce is an intelligent guy and most likely well-read, and while he likes to use evocative futuristic or occult imagery as a way of connecting with his listeners, he's generally writing about the same stuff people have always written about--people and the relationships between people.

For me, this song is clearly about a relationship (or relationships) ending, and two or more people now facing the world on their own. It could be a divorce or a separation, people dying and their souls moving on, or even a child or children growing up and leaving the home--venturing out on their own, and the lyrics describing the exhilaration as well as the sadness they feel. Regardless of the specifics, the focus is definitely on relationships ending and people facing a new unknown ('to navigate the seas of the sun').

Though the song is clearly about loss, the tone is definitely hopeful. And the perspective is ambiguous, which leaves it more open to interpretation...

General Comment:Rainbow Demon has it right, i think. After you mentioned that, i can't listen to this song without shivering each time at the correlation between Chariot of the Gods and other Von Daniken works and this song.

"To find our minds were spinning,
souls entwined in a spiral dance"

This means we found that our minds are far more interwined than we ever knew, with both and Alien nation each other, maybe even a GOD reference here in regard to the Universe being God. The 'spiral dance' refers to the shape of galaxies, which are often spiral shaped. There are potentially so many different life forms out there in one galaxy that all these different 'souls' are inwtined within this spiral dance. Quite beautiful, really.

"The ancient ways have found us, again,
to give us one last chance"

This is to say that the Aliens in Van Daniken's theories have or will come back to help us one last time to further our knowledge and species. Perhaps he is prophisizing here?

"Living in this place, staring into space we find
We might share the corners of our lives"

Living on Earth, when we stare into space we think about he possiblility that life did not originate on Earth, thus, we would share a bit of our DNA composition with an Alien race somewhere, otherwise known as, the corners of our lives.

"Infinity runs deep, eternety that we can't keep
Melting through the frozen wastes of time"

Infinity obviously runs on forever, and forever is deeper than comprehension goes. Eternity that we can't keep refers to the realization that one day (be it tomorrow or billions of years from now) humans will no longer exist. and our memory will melt into the frozen wastes of time, 'cos when the universe crunchs, time will not cease to exist.

    "Purple gold and blue,
Living colours every hue," This refers to stars, as stated earlier.

"Flowers in the garden of the gods" Stated earlier, stars are flowers in the universe (garden)

    "No one can ever know
If you never saw them grow
This darkness, is really full of light" The darkness that appears to be in the universe is really very much a bright place, due to the flowers in the gardens of the gods.

I could go on and on, but i'm tired and may do it later instead.

General Comment:I must Change What i said before. The album was not about space. I truly forgot about how the final song was about Macbeth. That said. I see no reason to dispute that this song is about space travel. "The suns Seas" is a term ocasionally used to discribe the space surounding the sun filled with high levels of radioactive activity. The quote mentioned by Eienstien, (mentioned earlier) was a reference to the machanics of the world, but of course, still referes to the universe.

As for space being desolate. what we currently KNOW of it yes. But this song is not about what we know. it is about what and how we dream. These are his visions, his perspective and his ideas of journying to another world, more vibrant and beautyful than our own......not a document of the traveling. as that would talk about the vast nothingness.

General Comment:Alright, after digging for a while, I found out that this one is based on Erich Von Däniken's theory about extraterrestrial presence on Earth long ago and about man dealing with that in the future.

    "Purple gold and blue,

Flowers in the garden of the gods
    No one can ever know

This darkness, is really full of light"

General Comment:Yeah, tyranny of souls isn't just about space. River of no return is about the river Styx or possible all the rivers of the dead in Greek mythology. Kill Devil Hill is about the right brothers flight. Power of the sun is a rather nihilistic look at Networking.

I know two things about Dickinson: First, he'll often write rather abstract songs. This is an example of one. I don't think their is an over all meaning, rather a description of how he feels sometimes.

Secondly: He loves science fiction, evident in Skunkworks on.

Oh, and to answer you about the Einstein thing, it was my favorite part.

"God doesn't throw dice with the Universe" is a quote by Einstien which he often said in defiance to quantum mechanics. I think it's a some what clever double entendre stabbing at both determinism and how much science resembles religion. This is most evident when he reverse God and Einstein in one of the final lines, suggesting people are the creators of their own understanding.

General Comment:Maidenfun is right, "seas of the sun" is space, what do you think why is he mentioning Einstein... My opinion is that he is singing about how we came here (human beings), and how we thought that earth is a flat plate and we new nothing about our planet until "new frontiers opened up our eyes" (ex. Gallileo...).

"So we go and will not return,
To navigate the seas of the sun
Our children will go on and on
To navigate the seas of the sun
" 0 it's obvious that one day we will leave this place forever and imprint to space to find other harbour and so our children will do the same thing, and on and on and on...

    "Purple gold and blue,
    Living colours every hue,
Flowers in the garden of the gods
    No one can ever know
If you never saw them grow
This darkness, is really full of light"
here he is describing picture of space, he means on stars coloured in every possible hue, milliards of gallaxies and stars as God's flowers in His garden which is space...
