There's a story in your eyes
I can see the hurt behind your smile
For every sign I recognize
Another one escapes me

Let me know what plagues your mind
Let me be the one to know you best
Be the one to hold you up
When you feel like you're sinking

Tell me once again
What's beneath the pain you're feeling
Don't abandon me
Or think you can't be saved

I walk beside you
Wherever you are
Whatever it takes
No matter how far
Through all that may come
And all that may go
I walk beside you
I walk beside you

Summon up your ghost for me
Rest your tired thoughts upon my hands
Step inside this sacred place
When all your dreams seem broken

Resonate inside this temple
Let me be the one who understands
Be the one to carry you
When you can walk no further

Tell me once again
What's below the surface bleeding
If you've lost your way
I will take you in

I walk beside you
Wherever you are
Whatever it takes
No matter how far
Through all that may come
And all that may go
I walk beside you
I walk beside you

Oh, when everything is wrong
Oh, when hopelessness surrounds you
Oh, the sun will rise again
The time you swim against will carry you back home
So don't give up
Don't give in

I walk beside you
Wherever you are
Whatever it takes
No matter how far
Through all that may come
And all that may go
I walk beside you
I walk beside you

General Comment:"loyalty, trust, faith and desire. Carry love through each darkest fire"

It's about supporting someone you love. Nothing more. Petrucci is religious, but I don't think that's what he was gunning for here.

General Comment:If this should be about the meaning of the song, then I don't think it's about God or religious things. It's about love. Anyway, this song really gives you the shivers down your spine. Once you listen to it, you can't stop listening. I mean, that probably goes for anyone. I hope. But the lyrics aren't cheesy at all. If this was the very first song in the world, it would be wonderful. Just pointing it out.
However, the song could be about God or someone religious comforting a loved one and saying "I can help you, and I will." That could be, but still is entitled, person loving person. Continous thoughts roam this Internet, but the truth is out there...yeah, it's right there. :)

General Comment:I definitely can see bible reference on this song, I'm i'm in "another religion" My interpretation are about caring someone as a human being and lift someone in a general manners. It's either about Religion on how the prophets lift up their followers regarding the hardship on their life and the doubt that they are having. And about someone that he's care the most, on family, girlfriend, friend, or a close ones. Even though it's not a self explanatory but most people will figure it out when they read the lyrics in general. :)

General Comment:This wasn't one of Dream Theaters typical 10+ minute long song and wasn't an instrumental with minimum singing, but I like it.

This is actually mine and my fiancé's song and we have always viewed it about love. It takes about walking besides someone through the hard times and opening up to the one that you love.

Summon up your ghost for me
Rest your tired thoughts upon my hands
    Step inside this sacred place
When all your dreams seem broken

    Resonate inside this tempple
Let me be the one who understands
Be the one to carry you
When you can walk no further

This has always been my favorite part because I have many ghosts in life and the relationship between me and my fiancé has been about opening up and carrying each other through the tough times. And since we are Jewish we don't see it about Jesus. Since the temple they talk about reminds us of our times in synagogues being together and building our relationship it is a fond part for us since our religion is about love and peace and they are happy thoughts.

General Comment:it's like the previous song on this album lyrically, except it's from the other person's point of view, who's trying to help the other

General Comment:Oh yeah, and this is actually a really great song. One of the better and inspiring songs by Dream Theater. Yeah it's not 42 minutes long, and it doesn't have any fast or hard parts where the guitarist and keyboard player are playing some fast riff together. It's a song that has a whole new approach from the norm, but a really inspiring song. It's hard to believe that people hate this song, I honestly don't see what's wrong with it.

General Comment:Whether this song was written for Mike Portnoy or for a woman, the fact is that the singer is saying that they'll always be with the person they're talking to. The song means that no matter what comes between them or what happens to them, they'll always be there for them to lend a helping hand (Y'know that one line in the chorus? "Through all that may come, and all that may go.) And, "Resonate inside this temple, let me be the one who understands," generally means that the singer is assuring the person that they'll always take care of them. This song is about love, and it's me and my girlfriend's song ^_^

General Comment:For me this song is about Fear, anxiety & self doubt. The wall is a representation of his fear. He is shy or introverted but the cause of this is the doubt he has with himself. This is stopping him from being his true self. We all have that 'little demon' in our head that places doubt in our minds. This a constant battle for many of us.

I originally didnt think he was talking to another person in this but now Im thinking this song is related to "I walk beside you". The person the lyrics are directed to is a confidant, friend or maybe a therapist. The ticking at the start of "I walk beside you" is a reference to "Scene 1 regression - Scences from a Memory" perhaps this relates to it being a therapist? The religious might say its a conversation with god, from a Freudian perspective, some might say its his conscious speaking to his sub-conscious mind.
One thing I pretty sure of is that if you want to break down the 'walls' you dont look to others to do this for you... the power lies within yourself. Others may be able to help you find the answer but in the end in the answer lies within... and thats a link to another DT song!

General Comment:In Octavarium, there is a section in the lyrics that refference all the songs on the album, giving them a description of each song.

    This one is about love.
