So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
Oh, you know I did it
It's over and I feel fine
Nothing you could say is gonna change my mind
Waited and I waited the longest night
Nothing like the taste of sweet decline
I was down, I fell, I fell so fast
Dropping like the grains in an hourglass
Never say forever 'cause nothing lasts
Dancing with the bones of my buried past
Never mind, there's nothing I could do
Bet your life there's something killing you
It's a shame we have to die, my dear
No ones getting out of here alive
This time
What a way to go, but have no fear
No ones getting out of here alive
This time
I'm finished, I'm getting you off my chest
Made you come clean in a dirty dress
A promise is a promise you kept in check
Hard to cross a heart that beats this fast
Take a good hard look for the very last time
The very last one in a very long line
Only took a second to say goodbye
Been a pleasure, but the pleasure's been mine, all mine
And never mind, there's nothing I could do
(Never mind, there's nothing I could do)
Bet your life there's something killing you
It's a shame we have to die, my dear
No ones getting out of here alive
This time
What a way to go, but have no fear
No ones getting out of here alive
This time
Ain't no way, DOA
Ain't no way, DOA
Take a good hard look for the very last time
The very last one in a very long line
Only took a second to say goodbye
Been a pleasure, but the pleasure's been mine, all mine
And never mind, there's nothing I could do
(Never mind, there's nothing)
Bet your life there's something killing you
It's a shame we have to die, my dear
No ones getting out of here alive
This time
What a way to go, but have no fear
No ones getting out of here alive
This time
It's a shame we have to disappear
No ones getting out of here alive
This time
This time
This time
It's over and I feel fine
Nothing you could say is gonna change my mind
Waited and I waited the longest night
Nothing like the taste of sweet decline

Maybe a stupid, unoriginal interpretation on any song, but I think it's about a difficult break-up.
"Oh you know I did it It's over and I feel fine Nothing you could say is gonna change my mind Waiting and I wait at the longest night Nothing like the taste to sweet decline"
He's just telling himself he "feels fine" hoping he can get out of this pain he's in. But he still wants her back - "Waiting and I wait at the longest night" is him knowing they should be together, and willing to wait.
"It's a shame we have to die my dear No ones getting out of here, alive This time
What a way to go, they have no fear No ones getting out of here, alive This time"
They're both having trouble with the break up, they both feel like shit, hence "no-one's getting out of here alive" - neither of them's getting out of this relationship with no pain.
"Finished, I'm getting you off my chest Made you come clean in a dirty dress" He's getting over her, but he's finding things out he doesn't like.
"Take a good hard look for the very last time The very last one in a very long line Only took a second to say goodbye Been a pleasure but the pleasure's been mine, all mine"
He's over her now, and is in deep regret about ever being with her, and is really, really pissed off at her.
Unfortunately, you're probably right.
