Lyrics for DOA as interpreted by EWizaCFT

DOA Lyrics
Oh you know I did it
It's over and I feel fine
Nothing you could say is gonna change my mind
Waiting and I wait at the longest night
Nothing like the taste to sweet decline

I was down, I fell, I fell so fast
Dropping like the grains in an hourglass
Never say forever cause nothing lasts
Dancing with the thorns of my buried past

Nevermind there's nothing I can do
Bet your life there's something killing you

It's a shame we have to die my dear
No ones getting out of here, alive
This time

What a way to go, they have no fear
No ones getting out of here, alive
This time

Finished, I'm getting you off my chest
Made you come clean in a dirty dress
A promise is a promise you kept in check
Heart across a heart that beats it's fist

Take a good hard look for the very last time
The very last one in a very long line
Only took a second to say goodbye
Been a pleasure but the pleasure's
been mine, all mine

Ain't no way, DOA
Ain't no way, DOA

It's a shame we have to disappear
No ones getting out of here, alive
This time
This time
This time

Look at the words here people this song is obviously about courtney love murdering Kurt Cobain. Ain't No Way DOA implies that there is no way kurt was dead when she got there. No one is getting out of here this time. Bet your life theres something killing you I MEAN COME ON now. Im getting you off my chest made you come clean in a dirty dress, courtney is known for being dirty. This also explains the Nirvana Lyrics here and why the album is called In Your Honor. Thats all i GOT

To me, this song is about our mortality, how finite it is, and trying not to wast our time with worry or fear, and not beating yourself up for past mistakes.

I guess it's better if we can have a healthy attitude about these things, and Dave is right there with us, screaming in the face of it, reminding us that we are all in this together, drifting toward the same inevitable sunset.

The line ".. It's a shame we have to die, my dear, no one's getting out of here alive..." looks death straight in the eye, with a defiant, " take your best shot " glare, encouraging us to take his hand and to run for as long as we can. A really empowering song.

referring to sewok15's comment. Man people really need to start letting go of the whole courtney/kurt complex in the foo fighters. Dave is an amazing and talented musician who has definately moved on to greener pastures since the tragedy with nirvana.
The foo fighters are the foo fighters! not the "I'm Still Messed up Because of Kurts Death".
Now there may be a few references in the debut album but life has definately moved on successfully for dave and pals since. let it go people.

I agree with a few posts here, dead on arrival seems to be about life on earth, we come here destined to die, so essentially, we are dead on arrival, it also comes through that way in the clip, its obvious that no one in the film clip can escape death... to quote a favourite film "you have to realise that one day you are going to die, until you know that, you are useless" .... so try to enjoy the time you have on earth

This song's about no looking back, and if you do regret something, then move on. The line, "I bet there's something killing you," signifies that there's always skeletons in our closets that linger and haunts us. The line "Dancing with the thorns in the past" confirms it. The regret we have keeps us captive, and to a certain degree dysfunctional. His best solution is to move on, and accept our inevitability...The end of life. So, just enjoy it while you do...This song's about optimism...It's a pretty song...Very smart.

I agree with most of the comments here, the song seems to be about a breakup, but I think there's a slightly different angle that I see. True, it's about a guy who broke up with a girl, but he's trying to get away, and she won't let him. He wanted to leave her because the relationship was purely physical (if you get what I mean) and he wanted more than that, though she did not.

-Nothing like the taste to sweet decline
(declining her offers, finally being able to)
-I was down, I fell, I fell so fast
Dropping like the grains in an hourglass
(her kind of stalking him, as if he fell running away from her)
-Finished, I'm getting you off my chest
Made you come clean in a dirty dress
(this is the /last/ time I'm letting you trick me, we're officially over, ps. you're a tramp.)
-Heart across a heart that beats it's fist
(the heart that beats its fist is hers and it is angry.)
-Only took a second to say goodbye
Been a pleasure but the pleasure's
been mine, all mine
(she was always quickly done with him, because it was just the sex, and she usually ends up "pleasured" but he's finally done with her so he's finally benefitting)

just my take on it =) (sorry it was so long)

I may well be overanalyzing, but after listening to the lyrics carefully a few times my take is that this involves a murder-suicide following a failed romance.

Also, this song IMO is a great exception to the bland-ness that comprises much of the first disc of IYH.

This doesn't necessarily have to be about a breakup...it could be about two close friends that are trying to pull through issues and they rely on each other to do so...the narrator is committing suicide but is talking to the friend that tried to keep him alive. He's saying that it doesn't matter what the friend says anymore, he can't take it. And he mention's the other friends problems "bet your life there's something killing you". and then continues to make references about how he tried to save his friend much like his friend tried to save him. "It's a shame we have to die my dear, no one's getting out of here alive" this is his admission that he does not believe either of them will be able to pull through, that he is killing himself and eventually his friend will too. DOA is his way of saying that they couldn't really help each other anyway, they were already so damaged that they were beyond repair (mentally dead, if not yet physically)

okay so heres my interpretation, right or wrong.

"Oh you know I did it
It's over and I feel fine
Nothing you could say is gonna change my mind
Waiting and I wait at the longest night
Nothing like the taste to sweet decline"

hes talking about past mistakes. its almost like hes talking TO them. he did and and the thing is over and hes okay with the fact that its over now. and there is no way that his regret (i think he refers to it almost in a person-like way in this song) is going to change how he feels now. he was waiting a very long time since his mistake to get over his regret, and since hes now, over it as "Oh you know I did it It's over and I feel fine" suggests, nothing feels greater to him then finally being able to overcome the regret and to have the pain is caused him to lessen and decline, as stated here "Nothing like the taste to sweet decline"

"I was down, I fell, I fell so fast
Dropping like the grains in an hourglass
Never say forever cause nothing lasts
Dancing with the thorns of my buried past"

he made his mistake quickly and suddenly, and "Dropping like the grains in an hourglass" is a line he is using to show jsut how suddenly and fast whatever his mistake was happened. he says to never say forever cuz no matter what mistake u made and what regret u have, it wont last, so dont act like it will. "Dancing with the thorns of my buried past" is a line he used to refer his statement about nothing lasting forever to his past mistakes and his regret.

"Nevermind there's nothing I can do
Bet your life there's something killing you"

the first line is pretty much telling the listener that its already done and over, you cant fix it, so u might as well say "nevermind" and move on. the second line is another statement DIRECTLY aimed at the listener. Dave is saying that he knows that there is SOMETHING in you that you regret and the regret is deeply hurting you. he is basically pulling the listener into the song, so instead of just listening to it, you FEEL it and start to relate to it and can UNDERSTAND it.

"It's a shame we have to die my dear
No ones getting out of here, alive
This time"

he says that its a shame that we all have to die sometime, and what he says in the second line is basically telling the listener straight forward and hard that YOU WILL DIE. its just a matter of time, and no matter how much you dont want to, you will eventually. its jsut a line dave is using to place that statement into the listeners mind. "this time" is a line that is comparing death to other difficulties in life. other things and other situations in life you can get out of. but you cant get out of death. so saying "this time" is basically stating that dave knows that you have gotten urself out of alot of shitty deals in life, but no matter what, you cant get urself out of death.

"What a way to go, they have no fear
No ones getting out of here, alive
This time"

dave is telling the listener that its terrible that you will eventually die, but he says to not worry about it, because everyone dies, no matter what. so all the worrying you do wont chang that and ur really jsut wasting ur time worrying.

"Finished, I'm getting you off my chest
Made you come clean in a dirty dress
A promise is a promise you kept in check
Heart across a heart that beats it's fist"

hes finished with his regret and hes going to move on. in this line "Made you come clean in a dirty dress" he accepted his mistake and what he did and didnt deny what he did, and even tho he knows what he did was bad or "dirty", hes faced it and accepted it so his mistake has finally "come clean". in doing is mistake, its almost like he made a promise. a promise that he would give in and DO that mistake and enjoy it then, but later, the other end of the promise comes about, and thats the regret. and the mistake kept its promise and made sure that dave regretted it, thus, the mistakes part of the promise was "kept in check". "Heart across a heart that beats it's fist" a refferal to the "cross my heart and hope to die" saying. basically stating that the promise was a strong promise that wasnt going to be broken. "beats its fist" is about daves heart, which is beating its fist out of anger, pain, and regret. it could also be about the mistakes heart, and how it constantly beats its fist, never giving dave a moment of peace. "heart across a heart" is talking about daves heart and the mistakes heart, and how the promise was so strong that their hearts were crossed.

"Take a good hard look for the very last time
The very last one in a very long line
Only took a second to say goodbye
Been a pleasure but the pleasure's
been mine, all mine"

in the first line he is saying to the listener to take a close look at your mistake for the last time. the second line is dave saying that he knows that youve looked at it closely before, many many times, and that this is the last one in a very long line of looks that you've done. in line 3 hes saying that its easy to let go of ur regret, after u take that good hard look at it and understand and accept what you did and that its over with. in the last lines of this section he is bidding farewell to his regret, and that he has learned from it, and it wasnt literally a pleasure, but it was in a way a benifit to him, cuz he is a better person for it and has learned from his mistake. its also him pretty much saying "i beat you, bitch" to his regret.

"Ain't no way, DOA
Ain't no way, DOA"

this little break in the song comes right after the chorus "no ones getting out of here alive". "aint no way" basically says that there is no way to avoid death. its inevitable. and "DOA" is dead on arrival. so from the very instant you "arrive", or are born, you already have an inescapable death in your future. you are pretty much dead on arrival in a sense.

"It's a shame we have to disappear
No ones getting out of here, alive
This time
This time
This time"

this is just a restatement of the fact dave proves in this song. its a shame we all have to "dissapear" off the face of the planet eventually, but dont be afraid of it. we all die. if you worry about it, ur wasting your time. its unavoidable. jsut accept ur ultimate destiny, and dont worry about it, because there is nothing you can do. this song is meant to help the listener. since the moment you were born, you were going to die. so dont spend your life regretting your past. know what mistakes you made were wrong, but face them, and accept that you did it, learn from them and make uself a better person, and be able to move on.

im sorry that was really long, but i hope it helps you make your own interpretation of this song, and i hope it helps you live your life.

I think it is a combination of sewok15's Nirvana "theory" and what everyone else is saying. Also the whole murder thing could be Cobain's murder thing some of you are talking about. Thats my, interpretation.

Another thing, I just thought of, the Cobain/Love part could be like a hidden thing message thing. Like the song has two meanings.......

I had to ask my Dad a million times what DOA meant and where they use it. Got a straight answer- Dead On Arrival used when an ambulance patient arrives at the hospital deceased. In my truest opinion, I believe The Foo Fighter's DOA is about living life to the fullest and finally going out with a bang and with the people you love nonetheless, and that life is bull without living it out.

i think the song DOA is kind of a continuation of the song best of you.
in the begining he says:
"Oh you know I did it
It's over and I feel fine
Nothing you could say is gonna change my mind
Waiting and I wait at the longest night
Nothing like the taste to sweet decline"
which means that the decision that he couldnt make before, he finaly made. and nothing that she/ they say is gonna change his mind.

"I was down, I fell, I fell so fast
Dropping like the grains in an hourglass
Never say forever cause nothing lasts
Dancing with the thorns of my buried past"

this means that he probably made alot of mistakes in the past, but hey nothing lasts forever.

"Nevermind there's nothing I can do
Bet your life there's something killing you"

all this means is that he mite have though about helping her, but then realized that their was nothing he could do cuz she wont change.

It's a shame we have to die my dear
No ones getting out of here, alive
This time

now this is very interesting cuz hes says " no ones getting out of here alive" no, it dosent mean he wants to kill someone. what i think it means is that when they break up, hes not the only one whos gonna feel pain. they wont be the same.

this is my favorite part of the whole song:
"Finished, I'm getting you off my chest
Made you come clean in a dirty dress
A promise is a promise you kept in check
Heart across a heart that beats it's fist"

this is saying that hes done with her and doesnt want anything to do with her anymore.and that he made her say how she really feels about him ( hence the part " made you come clean in a dirty dress) even though she didnt want to.

"Take a good hard look for the very last time
The very last one in a very long line
Only took a second to say goodbye
Been a pleasure but the pleasure's
been mine, all mine"

this is kind of self expanitory. all it means is for her to look one more time, and say goodbye to what she lost. and this will be the last time he will ever feel this way for her.
i think that intothegrinder2 is write it should be:Been a pleasure. but the pleasure's been mine, all mine

this is a really great foo fighters song. its one of my favorite.

I actually work in a hospital and the DOA patients are dreadful. Its nothing like the romantic, idealised idea the TFF give in the song, its a strange thing watching doctors trying to resus the patient, and listening to him moan as the O2 rushes past the larynx. other than that i have no criticism. i'm a new fan, and IYH was the first cd of TFF i bought. they rock, Dave Grohl is hot, but this isnt my fave song.

Okay, this is a bit wild but here's my thoughts on what this song is about...

'Oh you know you did it.
It's over and I feel fine.
Nothing you can say is gonna change my mind. Waiting and I wait at the longest night.
Nothing like the taste of sweet decline.'
He has been let down by his girlfriend so many times that he doesn't care anynmore and has decided to go down... And take his girlfriend down with him...

'I was down, I fell, I fell so fast.
Dropping like the grains in an hourglass.
Never say forever cause nothing lasts.
Dancing with the thorns of my buried past.'
He remembers all the times they've shared together.

'Nevermind there's nothing I can do
Bet your life there's something killing you

It's a shame we have to die my dear
No ones getting out of here, alive
This time

What a way to go, they have no fear
No ones getting out of here, alive
This time'
He tells her about this and kidnaps her or something and take her hostage.

'Finished, I'm getting you off my chest
Made you come clean in a dirty dress
A promise is a promise you kept in check
Heart across a heart that beats it's fist'
He tells her how much she's broken his heart and how bad she made him feel.

'Take a good hard look for the very last time
The very last one in a very long line
Only took a second to say goodbye
Been a pleasure but the pleasure's
been mine, all mine'
He's telling her to say her last words.

'Ain't no way, DOA
Ain't no way, DOA

It's a shame we have to disappear
No ones getting out of here, alive
This time
This time
This time'
That's where he kills himself and her too.

Sorry if this disturbs you a little bit but I honestly think that's what this song is about. The fact it's called D.O.A. supports my opinion I think.
