Lyrics for All These Things That I've Done as interpreted by K-nuxXx

All These Things That I've Done Lyrics
When there's nowhere else to run
Is there room for one more son
One more son
If you can hold on
If you can hold on, hold on

I wanna stand up, I wanna let go
You know, you know - no you don't, you don't
I wanna shine on in the hearts of men
I want a meaning from the back of my broken hand

Another head aches, another heart breaks
I am so much older than I can take
And my affection, well it comes and goes
I need direction to perfection, no no no no

Help me out
Yeah, you know you got to help me out
Yeah, oh don't you put me on the backburner
You know you got to help me out, yeah

And when there's nowhere else to run
Is there room for one more son
These changes ain't changing me
The cold-hearted boy I used to be

Yeah, you know you got to help me out
Yeah, oh don't you put me on the backburner
You know you got to help me out, yeah
You're gonna bring yourself down
Yeah, you're gonna bring yourself down
Yeah, you're gonna bring yourself down

I got soul, but I'm not a soldier (x10)

(Time, truth and hearts)

Yeah, you know you got to help me out
Yeah, oh don't you put me on the backburner
You know you got to help me ou, yeah
You're gonna bring yourself down, yeah
You're gonna bring yourself down
Yeah, oh don't you put me on the backburner
You're gonna bring yourself down, yeah
You're gonna bring yourself down

Over and out, last call for sin
While everyone's lost, the battle is won
With all these things that I've done
All these things that I've done
(Time, truth and hearts)
If you can hold on
If you can hold on

spokmage i agree that the song is written to appeal broadly, and that if you're a christian you arent always deep in your faith, theres days when you believe and days you dont- i think in other songs they sing about heaven being close or not. but i think a key line is 'dont you put me on the backburner'- i dont think that could be written about anyone other than God, as we can't put each other on the backburner

this song changed my life in a matter of five minutes. i love this song, and it is mainly about being led away from what you've been taught to be right. this is the ultimate killers song and anthem. amazing. i bow down to brandon flowers and his songwriting.

I hadn't thought of this song as a cry for help before, but it certainly makes sense.

I always interpret the 'I got sould but I'm not a soldier' thing to mean either, a) I'm cool, but I don't have any political point to make or (which I think makes more sense), b) I may have style, but not very much resolve.

My boyfriend keeps teasing me about this song, joking that you might as well sing 'I got toes, but I'm not a toaster'. Witty, yes - but misses the point somewhat I think!

he needs to alleviate his guilt. "While everyone's lost, the battle is won
With all these things that I've done" he feels he's done so much wrong he's ruining stuff.

I know it doesn't fit specifically with every part of the song, but still this song makes me think of dodging the draft.

to me, this song is not about religion at all... he isn't necessarily speaking to god, it could be to anyone.

"Is there room for one more son
These changes ain't changing me
The gold-hearted boy I used to be"
it could have something to do with his actual father, and not "father" in the god-sense

"I got soul but I'm not a solider"
I think the singer/writer's interpretation of a solider is one who is the epitome of soul. The epitome of purity of soul, one who is willing to fight for, and die for his/her beliefs.

So he/she is saying that he's got soul, but not to the degree or level of a solider

Are you people sure he says
"time, truth, and hearts"?

To me it sounds like
"time, truth, and trust"

as in, those are the things it'll take to improve his relationship with God. Makes sense, right?

Obviously you realize that I think this song is asking God for forgiveness and trying to be more religious.

"Is there room for one more son?" --son of God?

"I need direction to perfection" --obvious this could be religious

"these changes ain't changing me
[from] the cold-hearted boy I used to be" --changes to try to be a better person. They aren't really changing him and his fate, he needs God to do that

"I got soul, but I'm not a soldier" --expressing his realization that he has a soul he needs to protect. (Reminds me just a little bit of POTC 2's "we got to protect our immortal souls" when the curse is lifted. LOL just had to say that)

Oh, and I definitely hear "if you can't hold on", all the times he says that, instead of "if you can hold on". Yep, pretty sure it's "can't".

i'll get back to you if i think of anything else, so peace

has anyone here read Ender's Game by Orson Scott-Card? because if you have you might see a lot of lines that point to this song possibly being from the POV of Ender.

"is there room for one more son" - Ender was the third child born in a time when having more than two children in a family was unthinkable.

"i wanna shine on in the hearts of man" - everything Ender goes through is because he wants to help save mankind.

"i'm so much older than i can take" - upon entering battle school Ender was forced to grow up faster than any other boy his age should have.

"and my affection, well it comes and goes" - Ender's relationship with his sister Valentine.

"the gold-hearted boy i used to be" - self explanatiory, haha.

"while everyone's lost, the battle is won with all these things that i've done."

and the "i got soul but i'm not a soldier" line makes a lot more sense if you think of it in terms of being about Ender.

anyways, i could be wrong. just an idea. [:

In my opnion the line "I got soul, but I'm not a soldier" means something like he is willing to fight his point but not to any bloodshed and "While everyones lost, the battle is won with all these things that I've done" is arugably the biggest line saying that he's trying hard to acheive a goal (peace?) despite the actions of others.

Okay, I listened to it a couple more times and I realize that it is "hearts". Sorry, but that doesn't really make much sense to me.

Oh, and sweet video btw. ;-]

Takes me back to a holiday down to Rosebud with my wife & 6 month old son. I thought it was an old David Bowie song the first time I heard it. It just sounded so familiar. Absolutely love the song. Reminds me of good times but also fills me with inspiration & determination every time I hear it. Haven't really thought too much about the lyrics of the song, but sometimes it's all about the feel of a song & how it's delivered.

This song is actually Brandon asking God for help. He says, "When there's nowhere else to run, is there room for one more son". As a Christain, the bible refers to Christians as sons and daughters. He is asking God if there is still room for him after he has commited so much sin. He is saying in the bridge "I've got soul, but I'm not a souldier" because he is saying that he feels like he is a Godly man, but he isn't in it 100%.

This song fits me so well.
Especially now.
"I wanna stand up, I wanna let go..."
"I'm so much older than I can take,"
"I need direction to perfection,"
"These changes ain't changing me,"
"You know you gotta help me out,"

Everything I want to say in a song... I've always loved this song and it's always been one of my favourite Killers' ones, but now... not far behind Mr. Brightside for me anymore.

I hope people know that this is from the Greg Kinear, Pierce Borsnan movie "MATADOR"

I'm pretty sure that this song was written specifically for the movie, and they played a good majority of it at the end/credits. The movie PERFECTLY depics Pierce's charecter, along with Greg.

Best song ever for a moive imho, and I'm a local critic.

With this line, "These changes ain't changing me/The cold-hearted boy I used to be".
I thought it was "gold-hearted boy". That makes more sense to me :/
"Over and out, last call for sin". I thought that it was "over and /in/". I dunno.

i agree with a lot of you, that the character is pleading for God to save him from himself.

one thing i was thinking about is the line

"oh don't you put me on the backburner"

i think that the backburner is a metaphor of hell, and that hes desperate to go to heaven and begging God not to put him in the "backburner"
