Lyrics for All These Things That I've Done as interpreted by K-nuxXx

All These Things That I've Done Lyrics
When there's nowhere else to run
Is there room for one more son
One more son
If you can hold on
If you can hold on, hold on

I wanna stand up, I wanna let go
You know, you know - no you don't, you don't
I wanna shine on in the hearts of men
I want a meaning from the back of my broken hand

Another head aches, another heart breaks
I am so much older than I can take
And my affection, well it comes and goes
I need direction to perfection, no no no no

Help me out
Yeah, you know you got to help me out
Yeah, oh don't you put me on the backburner
You know you got to help me out, yeah

And when there's nowhere else to run
Is there room for one more son
These changes ain't changing me
The cold-hearted boy I used to be

Yeah, you know you got to help me out
Yeah, oh don't you put me on the backburner
You know you got to help me out, yeah
You're gonna bring yourself down
Yeah, you're gonna bring yourself down
Yeah, you're gonna bring yourself down

I got soul, but I'm not a soldier (x10)

(Time, truth and hearts)

Yeah, you know you got to help me out
Yeah, oh don't you put me on the backburner
You know you got to help me ou, yeah
You're gonna bring yourself down, yeah
You're gonna bring yourself down
Yeah, oh don't you put me on the backburner
You're gonna bring yourself down, yeah
You're gonna bring yourself down

Over and out, last call for sin
While everyone's lost, the battle is won
With all these things that I've done
All these things that I've done
(Time, truth and hearts)
If you can hold on
If you can hold on

I think this song is about a family with a lot of kids so the parents can't handle them all so it falls to the oldest child. And he doesn't want the responablity.

"I'm so much older then I can take."I think he's saying that he grew up too soon because he had to.

"You know you've gotta help me out."He's crying to his parents to be parents and help him out.

i don't know, maybe I'm wrong.^_^

i think this song is about the Iraq war...im surprised nobody has mentioned it yet, because thats the first thing that popped into my head. i think its about how peoples' sons (and daughters no doubt) are all going to Iraq, but the problem there is being 'put on the back burner' and the soldiers who go over there are no longer 'gold hearted boys', and grow up too fast--'i'm so much older than i can take'. and they want to be hero's 'i wanna shine on in the hearts of men', but they really aren't soldiers at heart-- ' i got soul but im not a soldier.'

God? I don't believe! But if he has made all these references then DAMN is he smart and boys, there is nothing hotter then a smart guy.

All these things that I've done -- maybe it's just that.

this song is amazing--someone asked what i'm so much older than i can take means. This most certainly is a reference to those who are damaged, they seem to grow up and mature and see the reality in things too early (catcher in the rye). brandon captures a whole theme of life in one simple phrase. powerful.

i think June Star 99 has a great point, only making one mistake that i noticed, Midnight Show is not the story of brandons charactor killing the girl, but disposing of her..the actual killing is supposed to be told on leave the bouton on the shelf which is too be on their new album.I absolutly love the music video to this song..especially the shower scene..i hate to say it but im probably another girl infatuated with brandon...if only he weren't so talented and good looking, or my term for hot.i don't like to use that word but i think its called for in this case.Brandon is so amazing..the songwriting of this song is mesmerizing just as all the other songs on hot fuss.

undoubtedly brandon flowers is a part of the lds church, as many of us have the choice to serve a full time mission, to act as a "soldier" of god, and to spread the word of the gospel. brandon never did serve a mission, in this case, lyrics "i've got soul, but i'm not a soldier", is just in relation to him not serving a mission. in my personal opinion, this is a great song, def one of my favorites from the killers, i can very much relate to this song, i myself have not served a full time mission, but my love and dedication for the church will always live.

this whole religious thing sounds accurate.... but if you look at the video clip it seems to be about someone who has mistreated his partner and is now suffering the consequences and realises how cowardly he was... "i got soul but im not a soldier"..... then again video's arent always true to the lyrics

Just a comment from your friendly neighborhood minority group:

I KNOW it's hard to believe, but not EVERYTHING is about god, alright?

I've heard them talk about this as being the third part of an out of order murder trilogy on the album. My theory is that "Midnight Show" is the first part, "I took my baby's breath beneath the chandaler/of stars and atmosphere." This seems to be the actual murder. The album opener "Jenny Was A Freind Of Mine" seems to deal with the imideiate aftermath, I always thought of it as a guy confessin' to the cops after he's caught "Tell me just what you want to hear". This would be the final part, where the guy is trying to find peace with God for his actions. Who knows, maybe he's waiting to be executed and this is his last chance for attonment. That might be streching it a bit but The Killers seem to take pride in their ambiguity.

'The Killers have that annoying habit of being able to write whatever they like and still sound good... and they damn well know it.'

Except i dont think its an annoyin habit of being able to do that i think it rocks 4 us :P

to all those christian types that got on this site... saying this song was written about god... you're a little right... but you're all soooo wrong!
Brandon Flowers (the lead singer) was raised as a Mormon! and, now he's a rebellious Mormon, publicly smoking Marlboro Lights and drinking alcohol and coffee - see june issue of rolling stone.
this song... well... i'm not sure about what he's going on about... but it aint jesus.
i'm a christian too... but just don't run around telling everyone this song is about Mr. Flowers crying out to god and all that bull. it might be to you, but it aint to him. why does music have to be a huge lesson in theology? if you want a touch from the holy spirit, put some gaither or hillsong on you stiffs. the killers is just good music.

p.s. check out all the other killers' songs... they're about transexuals, sexual encounters in the back of cars, a jealous boyfriend murdering his girlfriend, celebrity stalkers etc. etc. can't listen to that, can you, good little christians? gosh, if jesus was still dead, he'd be rolling in his grave.

What “All These Things That I’ve Done” means to me.

If you purchase the sheet music it says “one more song” in both places, not “one more son” (the only other differences are “oh no no no” and no mention of “time, truth, hearts”). Is this a mistake? I don’t think so. This is a song about someone driven in a creative task, songwriting, but in a relationship where his girlfriend doesn’t understand.

“I wanna stand up, I wanna let go” he’s ready to get out of a stressfull relationship, but he’s not going to end it.

“you know, you know, no you don’t, you don’t” she doesn’t understand what he is doing, what the significance is, but even more she is not happy with all the time it is taking.

“I wanna shine on in the hearts of men” he knows he’s going to achieve something great.

“I wanna a meaning from the back of my broken hand.” The broken hand is the broken relationship. You can’t hold on with a broken hand even if you want to. The price for success was the loss of his girlfriend.

“Another head aches, another heart breaks.” It’s over and he accepts it.

“I’m so much older than I can take.” It was stressful.

“And my affection, well it comes and goes.” He has a problem relating to people (remember he hasn’t changed--still the cold-hearted boy).

“I need direction to perfection--no no no no.” He could have a relationship, but he would need to work on it. He is’t willing or doesn’t have time right now.

What is “Time, truth, hearts?” These are the things songs are made from. This is what goes into a song.

In awnser to your comment aaronsicedcoffee, if Jesus were alive the sort of people you say the Killers write about are exactly the sort of people He would be mixing with, for as He says (to paraphrase) its not the healthy who need a docter. In fact, a glance at the New Testament will tell you Jesus was against the way people of His day insisted on judging others as if they had any right to. Theology lesson over.

As it happens, it does seem like this song has religious undertones. No, annoying American atheist-liberals (before the American religious right think I'm with them, i find you lot even more annoying so dont get your hopes up), that does not mean I think that every song ever written is about Godbothering, but it does mean I think this one is. Not even every song by the killers (as aaronsicedcoffee points out, they cover a wide range of issues) but again, just this one. I wont bother repeating what other people have said, but the Biblicle references they were able to point out are too numerous to be co-incedence.

as someone said above, i like to think about Jesus being the protaganist in this song. its a plea, or observation He's making about the state of people these days. and the only thing that doesn't work is if the lyric is "cold hearted boy"... but i like to think it's "gold hearted" and then it perfectly fits Jesus.

I think its about Jesus wanting everyone who's lost to just see and remember what He did for all of us.

"my affection, well it comes and goes" - meaning people believe and then they dont... people lose focus on Him

and He's asking to "help him out" - He doesn't want people to put him on the backburner... make Him a priority in your life because He wants to help... He came to help, but people reject Him. its kinda like the whole "help me help you" thing.

"while everyones lost the battle is won with all these things that I've done" - perfect way of saying everyones lost... everyones trying to fight there fight without realizing the battles allready been won by Jesus dying for us.

I also agree with all the biblical references in this song, but to answer someone's past question about what all the numbers in the video are: I've thought that they had to do with the seven deadly sins. How? I have no idea.

The video is not in chronological order (like pulp fiction) so the numbers represent the order the events go in. If you were to edit it in numerical order it would all make more sense.

uhhh... guys. really, honestly. going on all the other stuff the Killers have done, does this song really look like a God-y type thing? They have three songs about killing someone! You can go and extract any meaning you want from it, but in the end, this song probably isnt a 'God God I love God God God GodGodGod!' song...

I draw from it what you will... this is a song about inner strenght... a mental speel about a being...

nothing to do with god...

Brandon Flowers has said this song is very personal for him and considering he's a mormon who didn't go on a mission I think it's so obviously about his experiences with his religion. I've got soul- that refers to him not going on the mission as he's saying that even tho' he didn't go it doesn't mean he's not into his religion anymore.

Just because they have songs about murder and shit doesn't mean they can't also have more spiritual songs!

When I first listened to this song I thought that it was about time running out. The part where 'Is there room for one more SON' I thought it was sUn, asking for more time. But when I actually came across the lyrics and saw it was son, I was thrown back thinking a lot.
