Lyrics for All These Things That I've Done as interpreted by K-nuxXx

All These Things That I've Done Lyrics
When there's nowhere else to run
Is there room for one more son
One more son
If you can hold on
If you can hold on, hold on

I wanna stand up, I wanna let go
You know, you know - no you don't, you don't
I wanna shine on in the hearts of men
I want a meaning from the back of my broken hand

Another head aches, another heart breaks
I am so much older than I can take
And my affection, well it comes and goes
I need direction to perfection, no no no no

Help me out
Yeah, you know you got to help me out
Yeah, oh don't you put me on the backburner
You know you got to help me out, yeah

And when there's nowhere else to run
Is there room for one more son
These changes ain't changing me
The cold-hearted boy I used to be

Yeah, you know you got to help me out
Yeah, oh don't you put me on the backburner
You know you got to help me out, yeah
You're gonna bring yourself down
Yeah, you're gonna bring yourself down
Yeah, you're gonna bring yourself down

I got soul, but I'm not a soldier (x10)

(Time, truth and hearts)

Yeah, you know you got to help me out
Yeah, oh don't you put me on the backburner
You know you got to help me ou, yeah
You're gonna bring yourself down, yeah
You're gonna bring yourself down
Yeah, oh don't you put me on the backburner
You're gonna bring yourself down, yeah
You're gonna bring yourself down

Over and out, last call for sin
While everyone's lost, the battle is won
With all these things that I've done
All these things that I've done
(Time, truth and hearts)
If you can hold on
If you can hold on

i'll go along with most of the other people here and say it definitely sounds like a plea to God. by the way, i have gone through whole days constantly singing "i've got soul but i'm not a soldier" in my head...so awesome.

I don't think this has anything to do with god. People don't, and shouldn't need god as a reason to turn their life around

Sawall has it right. If you read a lot of the Psalms, the Killers song is actually a modern day version of a Psalm. David appealed a lot to God, expressed his frustrations about a lot of things, and sought redemption.

I originally tought that the protagonist was Jesus b/c of the cruxification imagery ("back of my broken hand") who may have been at the Garden of Gethsame the night before his cruxification appealing to the Father to relieve him of his burden ("You know you got to help me out") reflecting on the pains of humanity ("Another head aches, another heart breaks"). Add to that the Armageddon like conclusion about victorious combat ("the battle is won"), the finality of his last action ("With all these things that I've done," which compares very well with John 19:30 where Jesus says, "It is finished" after going through his pre-meditated cruxification), and the seemingly contradictory images about victory through defeat (E.g., Jesus dying to become victorious over death, achieving greatness by being humble, facing hostility by "turning the other cheek").

Then there were things that were not Christ-like such as his reflection of life as a "cold hearted boy," which contrasts with Christ's sinless life as a child. That made it less likely that the protaganist was Christ. So it became puzzling that we had imagery about a cruxified messiah figure with a past that was less than righteous.

But through the Psalms, David took on Christ-like properties. The Psalms were written by a man in a prophetic vein, foreshadowing a divine figure (Christ). As a result, David would often take on attributes of a perfect Messiah while still retaining his failings as a flawed human beiing. The Psalms like this Killers song has elements of admitted failings, yearnings for perfection, petitions to higher powers, and assurances of a positive resolution.

Undoubtedly, this song has a lot of religous overtones. Given Brandon Flowers background as a Mormon and his serious treatment of his faith that he has not renounced, the infusion of his upbringing into his song-writing is natural. Although not great songwriting (sorry, that is reserved for Dylan, Springsteen, Joni Mitchell) this is a clever uplifting piece that only someone with a positive religious upbrining can write. This is a song that Trent Reznor can never hope to write.

For the actual song meaning, you guys got it right.
But for the video meaning, i have an idea. Well, there are the signs with the numbers on them in mixed order. If you put the numbers in the correct order (1,2,3 etc) then the scenes will tell a story.
Scene 1= Brandon walks in the door, apparently cheating on his 'girlfriend', and his girlfriend is obviously upset. he then goes to take a shower and falls.
Scene 2=The killers fall from the sky. (Brandon falls in the shower and through the sky onto the ground)
Scene 3= The killers walk around the streets alone, almost lost or astray, and get the donkey (??)
Scene 4= The girls drive through the village and pass the killers, and the killers chase after the girls and steal the girls sign.
Scene 5=They meet up with the girls, and i figure they are all the girlfriends that the killers cheated on.
Scene 6= They have a ''battle''.
Scene 7=While everyone's lost (the girlfriends lost the guys, and the guys lost their lives), the battle is won with all the things (the girls) have done. (the battle of the cheating is over)
So obviously the video is about is about cheating, and the womens revenge. Brandon comes home with evidence of his sins so he takes shower to wash away his sins, meanwhile the whole gang needed to wash away their sins. Then they walk astray down the streets looking for direction in their lives and they battle with the girls, and in the end the girls win. sweet revenge!!

Excuse me? So only those particular artists (and others like them) can be great songwriters? What nonsense.

did anybody notice that in the video the girls sign says "the killer sluts" and they stomp out the the luts so it says the killers. part of it is in a carnival of some sort and i think the killer sluts are an act in the carnival and the killers steal their sign.

I love this song. It's funny cause I'm not sure if the " I got soul, but I'm not a soldier" part is one of the best lyrics ever or just stupid.
About the video, I really don't understand it... I only watch it because of the shower scene.

mmm Brandon...

Tasha xox, it's funny that you came up with this idea of the scenes in the "All These Things That I've Done" video being out of sequence. Just the other day I was thinking that the songs on the Hot Fuss album all tell a story if you play them in the correct order (see below). Someone posted that Brandon said in an interview that he thinks of his music like a movie. Played in the following order these songs defiantly sound like a screen play.

Track#6 - Andy, You’re a Star
A look at a young mans strange, sexually confused high school past.

Track#4 - Somebody told Me
He sees a girl at a bar and wants to get to know her and take her home - lingering sexual confusion.

Track#7 - On Top
They are a couple having fun enjoying each other, and going out to parties.

Track#2 - Mr. Brightside
He becomes jealous, he thinks his girlfriend is cheating on him.

Track#8 - Change Your Mind
She has lost the love she felt for him, he's to jealous. He's trying to stop her from leaving.

Track#11 - Everything Will be Alright
His girlfriend is getting ready to leave him. He is angry and sarcastic about it, he has given up trying to stop her.

Track#10 - Midnight Show
His anger consumes him, he kills his girlfriend and dumps the body in the ocean.

Track#1 - Jennny was a Friend of Mine
He is arrested by the police for the murder of his girlfriend.

Track#5 - All These Things That I've Done
He is looking to God for redemption for killing his girlfriend.

Track#3 - Smile Like you Mean It
He's found his redemption and realizes he can't change the past, just smile and move on.

Track#9 - Believe Me Natalie
And finally, the moral of our story: Put aside jealousy, hate and anger, make the most of today, there may be no tomorrow.

'When there's nowhere else to run
Is there room for one more son
One more son'

If you can hold on
If you can hold on, hold on

this part sounds like brendon has been listening to his U2 albums again. This song starts out very familiar to "where the streets have no names"

'i wanna run, i wanna hide......"

I wanna stand up, I wanna let go.......

the next line
You know, you know - no you don't, you don't
sounds like he wants to tell someone how he wants to do the things he knows are right and just let go of the world, but he doesnt think anyone around him would really understand......and he cant do it on his own

I wanna shine on in the hearts of men

I want a meaning from the back of my broken hand
(maybe he punched a wall and broke his hand and he wonders why he does things like that?????)

Another head aches, another heart breaks
I am so much older than I can take
And my affection, well it comes and goes
I need direction to perfection, no no no no

Oh well, I'll try again..........
When there's nowhere else to run
Is there room for one more son
One more son
-this is the 'prodigal son' story in the Bible where the son turns his back on his father and goes off into the world only to find out he had it better with his father so he returns back home.

If you can hold on
If you can hold on, hold on
-sounds like advice for others that it's not always easy to stay where you know you are supposed to be, but try to hang on.

this part sounds like Brandon has been listening to his U2 albums again. This song starts out very familiar to "where the streets have no names"

'i wanna run, i wanna hide......"

I wanna stand up, I wanna let go.......

I wanna shine on in the hearts of men
-only THE LIGHT can shine in the hearts of men and we know who THE LIGHT is!

Another head aches, another heart breaks
-hurting other people
I am so much older than I can take
-i should be learning from these things as I get older
And my affection, well it comes and goes
-not able to love like before
I need direction to perfection, no no no no
-only the Holy Spirit can give direction to perfection

Help me out
Yeah, you know you got to help me out
Yeah, oh don't you put me on the backburner
You know you got to help me out, yeah
-sounds like a cry for help, 911, needing immediate help, now, an emergency.

And when there's nowhere else to run
Is there room for one more son
These changes ain't changing me
The cold-hearted boy I used to be
-if it's 'gold-hearted boy' then it might mean that with all of the new things in his life his heart has not changed, it's still in the same condition.

I got soul, but I'm not a soldier
-in 2 Tim 2:3 it reads that christians are soldiers for Christ and they should not get entangled with the affairs of civilian life if they entend to please their commanding officer. Maybe Brandon thinks his soul is saved, and he has his ticket to eternal life with God even though at this time he does not think he is participating in the spiritual battle.

(Time, truth and hearts)
-two out of the three things are eternal, truth=the Word of God, and hearts=souls of men and women.
eternal things are the most important, time will end someday.

I think sawall has answered well for the last lines and Tasha and June star have great insight!

Yes, excuse you!!! The other day, I thought the title of "most beautiful woman in the world" was reserved for my wife. (She actually is, by the way). I guess that is "nonsense." I thought the title of "most awesome mom in the world" was reserved for my mom (She actually is, by the way). I guess that is "nonsense." Figurative declaration of superlatives seem to be nonsensical . . . at least to people who take things too literally. I can at least safely say the title of "most-mentally impaired Killers fan" is reserved for 'atom_eyes' (S/he actually is, by the way). And that is NOT "nonsense."

Religious undertones--seriously? Never considered that; but to say what I generally think about this song: "Better single please."

The piecing together of the scenes via the numbers held up in the music video really did clear things up for me, however. =D

I also love the main girl in the music video for this song, she's sorta creepy lookin'.. and she licks things before she throws them. :)
