Lyrics for Andy, You're a Star as interpreted by Linger:

Andy, You're a Star Lyrics
On the field I remember you were incredible
Hey shut up, hey shut up, yeah
On the field I remember you were incredible
Hey shut up, hey shut up, yeah
On the match with the boys, you think you're alone
With the pain that you drain from love
In a car with a girl, promise me she's not your world
'Cause Andy, you're a star

Leave your number on the locker and I'll give you a call
Hey shut up, hey shut up, yeah
Leave your legacy in gold on the plaques that line the hall
Hey shut up, hey shut up, yeah

On the streets, such a sweet face jumping in town
In the staff when the verdict is in
In a car with a girl, promise me she's not your world
Cause Andy, you're a star
In nobody's eyes but mine
Andy, you're a star
In nobody's eyes but mine
Andy, you're a star
In nobody's eyes
In nobody's eyes but mine

i read an article with brandon flowers where he raises the question "maybe andy is a girl"...ha. i don't believe that. but what brandon's main point is this as he says:

"i just write stories, bizarre, weird, entertaining stories and only sometimes are they autobiographical."

so i think, yes, it is a story of a bi or gay boy that has feelings for an athlete that may never see him the same way...and it's freaking awesome..twisted and beautiful and dark, just like the best of brandon's songs.

Man, best killers song, ever (narrowly beating midnight show) but i honestly think that:
1.It's about a stalker
2.it's about a male stalker
3.the stalker didn't have the courage to talk to andy, the amazing sports star, or every time he tries to befreind andy he puts him down (hence the shut ups)
4.The stalker sees andy in the car with a girl and and gets enraged (promise me she's not your world) because he has sexual feelings for andy (and NO im not saying brandon flowers is gay)
5.I think the stalker gets so enraged he attacks, and maybe even kills andy (in the staff when the verdict is in)

that's what i think, it makes sense too, weither or not it's right, i have no idea

This is what I get the impression of.

Whoever wrote the song walked into a high school, found a plaque with Andy's name on it. He was well known during his day but now is out of the spotlight. This person looking at Andy's accomplishments is the only person that has admired Andy's accomplishments in a while.

Looking at all the lyrics I doubt this is even close but it's just the impression that i get

wow when i heard this song i had no idea it was about a stalker...

to me it seemed to be about a guy named Andy, who is an athlete, and possibly plays on the football team "on the field i remember you were incredible."

andy is gay, but if any of his teammates found out, they would freak. so andy keeps his boyfriend a secret. his boyfriend is the one singing the song.

andy didnt initiate the affair, the other guy did. "leave your number on the locker and i'll give you a call". the bf is confident in front of andy, but secretly harbours some doubts. telling andy "andy, you're a star in nobody's eyes but mine" makes it seem like no one could ever love him as much as his boyfriend, and the boy tells andy this to keep him involved.

i think that the singer wants to get things out in the open, but knows that andy is afraid to come out. when he wants to talk to andy about their relationship at school, andy tells him to "shut up".

andy dates girls to cover up his being gay, and his bf gets insecure about it "in a car with a girl, promise me she's not your world".

but the two still go out clubbing some nights, and maybe to gay bars. "on the streets, such a sweet face jumpinfg town".

and that's my assessment, however long, confusing, or wrong you think it is :)

some people have said that the singer (Brandon Flowers) is gay or bisexual. And some people are saying like "no way hes not" and say that it doen't have to mean hes gay. Well I agree it doesn't. I read manga alot and there's a particular series called "gravitation" where the main character is a boy who falls in love with this guy. BUT HE'S NOT GAY. I think the main person in this song does have a crush on another guy and can't control it, even though he's not gay, and doesn't know whats going on.

I agree w/ her. Oh andI read the hes a MORMON. dont they have like 10 wives?

Andy may be short for Andrea but I dunno the stalker thing works for me. And Brandon FLowers is from Nevada I believe and most mormons live in Utah and they sing a song about Jesus, but then again I know nothing about the mormon ways lol.

I wish people would actually read artist interviews instead of making these crackpot theories and assuming Brandon Flowers is gay.

The truth is that it IS about a stalker, about being obsessed with the golden boy in a high school.

This song ties in well with the stalker idea, but i see it differently.
Andy is a depressed/heartbroken athlete (On the match with the boys, you think you're alone/With the pain that you drain from love) and he thinks noone understands him. Brandon admires Andy and is worrid about him (In a car with a girl, promise me she's not your world)
He wants Andy to stop putting himslef down (Hey shut up, Hey shut up) [note that line is being said in a friendly tone, not in a defensive one.]
And wants Andy to know he's there for him (Leave your number on the locker and i'll give you a call).
Basically trying to cheer andy up (coz andy your a star) and that it doesnt matter what anyone else thinks (in nobody's eyes but mine).
I suppose that could also be interpreted as if he's gay, but I think the songs more about wanting to help/ be friends with Andy.

Either way, its a good song,
I love that fact that so many people have different intreptations.

I doubt anyone's still reading this far down, but i just thought i'd point out a couple of things. Firstly, i dont think he is and i want to make that clear, i -dont- think he is, but being engaged to a woman doesn't mean you can't be bisexual, that's the point, you like both.

I also want to say that being obsessed with someone or stalking someone doesn't mean you're sexually attracted to them. Some stalkers hate themselves so much and want to be someone else, they can be so engulfed by someone else's greatness that they get disillusioned. For instance it's common to think that the other person is equally obsessed with you, even if you've barely spoken to them before, and seeing them 'in a car with a girl' would make you extremely annoyed, because you thought they only had eyes for you - but NOT in a sexual way. This is about obsession, not sexual desire.

If you're an unpopular one in school, you can't help but be envious of the ones who get more attention, such as the jocks. It can reach a level of almost obsession. I think for Flowers, this might ring true, and this is what he was originally writing the song about

But as he further wrote it, it took on this entire psychosexual stalker spin. I'm into writing -- be it stories, poems or lyrics for local musician friends. There's time where you set out to write one thing, but the further you get into it, it can rise to quite a different level. It may have started off as something based on actual events, but once you add this other level to it, it sometimes works out better and becomes quite deeper or more interesting that if you're a writer worth your weight, you'll run with it, unafraid of how people may understand your work. I think that can certainly be said about Flowers. It's whatever satisfies you as a writer.

So, he may have been envious/jealous of this jock he knew. But the sexual/stalker aspect was an addition to give it more layers.

The "promise me she's not your world" line means to me that the person in the singer's point of view is slightly younger than Andy -- he's just coming into being a man (the song obviously set in teenage days), he probably respects this Andy for his athletic accomplishments and "manliness." They most likely became friends, but their friendship was split apart and reduced once Andy got into this girl. So, there's an area of the singer insanely jealous of this girl, not wanting her to be the sole focus of Andy's life.

you guys, brandon is NOT gay, and brandon has said in an interview what this song is about...a man that has an obsession with a male football player at his high school, the girl in the car is andy's girl, but the narrator is gay, NOT BRANDON, although brandon did write this song, right? i think he did...and fadetoblack, are you talking about the ATTTID video? wrong song, if you are...

It's a little out of hand that people are assuming things about Flowers because of him writing an ambiguous song like this.

He's obviously a talented lyricist/writer, and good writers can tap into any emotion or mindset and pull it off -- it's ridiculous for people to think that straight writers couldn't write a song or story about gays, or that gays couldn't write a song or story about straights, for that matter. It's like saying an African American writer has no business writing in the point of view of a white or vice-versa. There's no limit, it's not exclusive -- it's all storytelling, it's entertainment.

In the case of The Killers, they provide good tunes with lyrics that tell a story or make you think, it's not mindless, it's not the same old thing, but a vast field of colors. And as a curmudgeonly guy who hates most new music, I like The Killers and think they're a welcome addition to the world of music for that.

I apologize for another post, but I wanted to clarify what I meant about The Killers' lyrics not being "the same old thing." I didn't mean that I think they're 100% original, unique and innovative -- you can easily hear their '80s influences (I can hear Morrissey easily singing "Smile Like You Mean It").

What I meant was that, for the most part, their songs aren't all the same, they're not singing about the same exact thing each song. There's a variety, there's often a storytelling format to their songs. In the days when you have one-note hack bands like My Chemical Romance singing of how terrible the world is, it's nice to have a current band that's actually talented, can write good lyrics and have songs that differ from each other.

I agree with many of the other people about the whole idolization thing..

..Yes, he is a mormon, no, just because someone is a mormon, it does not mean that they have mulitple wives

and Daisuke, I suggest you look into MCR's songs, before bashing them. They do not sing/write lyrics about "how terrible the world is."

It's true; MCR is actually quite good...and having multiple spouses is illegal in the US, Brandon has said so. He actually gets pretty annoyed when people joke about it too...

I think the singer is just a loner who nobody sees or cares about, he looking up to Andy because he’s popular and a good athlete. The singer sees everything in Andy that he doesn’t have himself . The singer thinks Andy has it all and is jealous because Andy doesn’t realize what he has. In the line “In a car with a girl, promise me she's not your world” the singer is saying don’t just find some girl and get married and have kids, he thinks Andy is a star and could do amazing things with his life. However, the only person who thinks that is the singer, Andy is not really as special as the singer thinks he is. I do believe that the singer is obsessed with Andy and maybe in love with him, and finds meaning and satisfaction for his own life by watching everything Andy does.

i know someone that's mormon, and multiple wives got outlawed AGES ago.

And in an interview, he said it's from a male perspective but NOT his own.

also, he laughs at the rumors that his gay/bi, but he says it's not a bad thing that people are confused (maybe he doesn't want crazy girl fans chasing after him all the time?)

First off this is a really dark song. The song in my opinion is about obsession. This straight guy is obsessed with this semi-popular guy who possesses everything that he wants, fame a girl a legacy. So he kidnaps him and is now telling him everything; just look at the first few lines in the song. “Hey shut up, hey shut up, yeah” he’s telling the “jock” to shut up. “In a car with a girl, promise me she's not your world” the jock has the girl that he wants. He’s telling him you better not love her because he does. You can tell that the jock is semi-popular because he says “Cause Andy, you're a star in nobody's eyes but mine”, nobody’s eyes but mine come on. The reason why he’s so popular to the obsessed, is because that’s what he wants.
