Lyrics for Andy, You're a Star as interpreted by Linger:

Andy, You're a Star Lyrics
On the field I remember you were incredible
Hey shut up, hey shut up, yeah
On the field I remember you were incredible
Hey shut up, hey shut up, yeah
On the match with the boys, you think you're alone
With the pain that you drain from love
In a car with a girl, promise me she's not your world
'Cause Andy, you're a star

Leave your number on the locker and I'll give you a call
Hey shut up, hey shut up, yeah
Leave your legacy in gold on the plaques that line the hall
Hey shut up, hey shut up, yeah

On the streets, such a sweet face jumping in town
In the staff when the verdict is in
In a car with a girl, promise me she's not your world
Cause Andy, you're a star
In nobody's eyes but mine
Andy, you're a star
In nobody's eyes but mine
Andy, you're a star
In nobody's eyes
In nobody's eyes but mine

Nope, it's Andy.

This song is from a stalker's point of view.
"On the match with the boys, you think you're alone"
The person thinks they're alone, but the stalker is following them.
Or if not a stalker, a girl (or possibly a guy) who took their obsession with their favorite sports player too far and is on trial for it.
"In the staff when the verdict is in"
Or at least that's what I think.

I don't really agree with the "stalker" idea. I think it's about liking this this player. maybe the lead singer or someone in the band had a crush on the guy and the lines "hey shut up" make me think maybe they got made fun of or something. For mean it just seems like the singer is confused and hurt "promise me she's not your world"...

Brandon Flowers said it was about a stalker. "On the match with the boys, you think your alone", that defienetly screams stalker.

The lyrics certainly convey a certain level of "stalker-ness," but I also get the impression that this song is set on the high school level. For some reason, whenever I hear it, I envisioned some slightly-disturbed kid, perhaps a gay boy, who is obsessed with one of the school's athletes.

For example:

"On the match with the boys" conjures up images of wrestling, so maybe he is on the wrestling team. "On the field I remember you were incredible" suggests, to me at least, an athletic field. Football, or soccer, perhaps. And, most strongly, "leave your legacy in gold on the plaques that line the hall." Legacy, based on the other lyrics, seems like an athletic legacy -- championship games, most valuable player, et cetera. These line the halls of the locker oom, on which the singer requests he leave his number. And at the risk of over-interpretation, maybe he's talking about a locker room?

With regards to the gay male aspect, I really don't have much support; it just feels like that's the scenario, though I could be wrong. The "hey shut up, hey shut up" lyrics strike me as being the other jocks at this high school telling the school "fag" to "shut up," and suggests that the stalker / singer is considered an outcast by the other students.

I read in a few different inerviews that Brandon Flowers is bisexual, and wrote this song about a jock he had a crush on in high school.

I've SEEN an interview with flowers and he doesn't seem gay AT ALL. He seemed like the US's version of like....how can I say this....um...a normal 20's guy...I guess. What this song seems like to me is that Flowers is playing the character of someone really needy and dependent and he's looking up to Andy as a friend, maybe Andy's a jock, or maybe not even popular, just someone Flowers wants to be friends with and...Andy doesn't want to be friends but Flowers won't let it go and starts stalking him. And maybe the girl in his car ("IN A CAR WITH A GIRL, PROMISE ME SHE'S NOT YOUR WORLD"), maybe that's not Andy's girlfriend. It could be his best friend and Flowers is jealous of that. We have to remember, these r the Killers and their lyrics often have multiple and/or hidden meanings.

What I've gathered from Brandon's interviews is that it really pisses him off that people assume he's gay because of this song. Supposedly it's only part-biographical, he knew a jock named Andy in high school and was jealous of him (Brandon was chubby as a kid), but the gay-stalker theme grew out of the song, it's got no relevance to Brandon himself.

I agree with Flaneur. I read that this is about a college football player that Brandon looked up to when he was younger….theres definetely the feeling that he was was slightly “uncool” and may have been made fun of….he may have even told the player that he thought he was good and this may have resulted in him being teased. I however don’t think it has any gay tones at all…..he just admired this guy as he was everything that he wanted to be. It’s a really sweet song actually…but I think its been made out to seem a lot darker that what it really is.

i agree generally with rizo, but dont think that andy was necessarily a really popular guy cos it says 'Andy, you're a star IN NOBODY'S EYES BUT MINE' . This suggests that perhaps andy was himself a bit unpopular and the person flowers is playing, or flowers himself, identified with him beause of that

I think the song talks about how the singer is stalking Andy, but he is imaging about how he would be with Andy. 'In a car with a girl, promise me she's not your world', tells me he's stalking him and is jealous of the girl cause he knows Andy isn't gay but he tries to image it anyway. That's what I think. Not very sure.

Lets start with a basic analysis. This are the two facts that can't be denyed.
1.Andy is an athlete
2.The boy singing is obsessed about him.
Many people think it's a gay song, but i dont agree with that. I think they are both heterosexual, but "Brandon" is confused by his admiration towards Andy, there's no clear limit if there is a sexual atraction or not. It´s written from a teenager's point of view, and teenagers are primarily confused and desperate.
I think he admires Andy, because Andy is something he wishes to be,but he is not sure if he is attracted to him, he is just confused. Maybe he is just wanting Andy to pay a little more attention to him. Anyways, i think he stalks him too, but just because andy doesnt care if he is around or not.All the story seems like a stalker crush on the popular guy.
"Andy you are a star in nobodies eyes but mine". It doesnt mean andy is not popular. It means brandon eyes see him beyond being a popular, they consider him " a Star". ( like a paparazzi stalking a celebrity)
He idealises him,and that's what a crush is all about.

why is it no one can write a song about someone of the same sex anymore without it having to be gay anymore? i think this is about someone brandom was mates with called andy. "in a car with a girl, promise me she's not your world" strikes me as the type of thing you'd think about a mate if you saw them fall for someone you knew was gonna hurt them. yeah it might be about obsession, but the music makes me think it's more casual than that.

I can't picture Brandon being gay or bi. I think it's more like a couple have said, a friend. Andy's an athlete who doesn't seem to want to be friends w/ Brandon or the character and he's upset by this. Maybe they were friends but went their separate ways in hs and now Brandon still wants to be friends, but Andy is too "cool" to hang out w/ him. So Brandon is stalking him and upset by the fact that this girl is getting more attention then he is. But that's just my take on it all.

It's not about a stalker and it isn't about a professional sports player. You can tell it is in high school by the line "leave your number on the locker". Flowers claims it was written from a man's perspective, but not necessarily his own. It's a song about a boy's crush on a male athlete in high school.

He recently got engaged to a (female) model so that counters the homosexuality rumors, although he doesn't seem to mind the confusion.

I like that there are so many interpretations of the meaning of this song. Reminds me how evil song writers can be, I love it.
Personally I thought the attention went both ways. Maybe this Andy was willing to have a relationship with this guy "leave your number on the locker and i'll give you a call" but wasn't willing to be outed so kept dating girls at the same time. "in a car with a girl, promise me she's not your world"
As for the sexuality of Flowers, musicians and people in general.. sexuality is a lot more fluid then most people want to believe. I mean, who wants to be judged by a label? Show of hands.

I think this song is definatly about a stalker type, who seems more male to me than female, but i could be wrong. I think that this stalker likes to go and watch him play football (on the field i remember you were incredable) and he possibly gets beaten up for being gay.I think that the part "Andy your a star in nobodies eyes but mine" is about everyone in this dudes football team being equal, but to the stalker, hes one of a kind and to only him, hes special and "a star" in his eyes

i love this song. so much. without basing my suggestions on what all you guys said, im just gonna say what i think the song means. i think its a kid who truly looks up to andy..hence 'andy, you're a star'. possibly an athlete. or maybe a soldier. andy is probably underestimated, and the singer (brandon flowers) is really the only one, or he thinks he is the only one, who truly see's the star in Andy. so yeah..awesome song.

This is what I think, but Brandon Flowers is singing about an athlete Andy in highschool who had a great future as an athlete. Everyone knows it is along the lines of that.
I think that a girl is involved. "Leave your number on the locker and I'll give you a call" which means he is going to call her to go on a date or something.

Then, in the part of the song where it states "In a car with a girl, promise me she's not your world", could mean that he and the girl do what many teens do when they are in a car together.
This could lead to him getting her pregnant.
He wants to be reponsible, so he decides to devote his life to the child, not allolwing him to become a "star in nobody's eyes"
Then this, ''Leave your legacy in gold on the plaques that line the hall'' would make sense.
Maybe my interpretation of the song is wrong, but it kind of makes sense... right???

some people have said that the singer (Brandon Flowers) is gay or bisexual. And some people are saying like "no way hes not" and say that it doen't have to mean hes gay. Well I agree it doesn't. I read manga alot and there's a particular series called "gravitation" where the main character is a boy who falls in love with this guy. BUT HE'S NOT GAY. I think the main person in this song does have a crush on another guy and can't control it, even though he's not gay, and doesn't know whats going on.

brandon flowers is NOT bi/gay. he is engaged to a WOMAN. and he has stated in quite a few interviews that he is straight. he also does write songs from different persons' perspective. andy youre a star is about a foot ball player that he "fancied" in school. but this sone also does have multiple meanings hence the stalker theory. and yes, the song does have homosexual references, but that dosent mean that he himself is gay/bi.
