Lyrics for Jenny Was a Friend of Mine as interpreted by Linger:

Jenny Was a Friend of Mine Lyrics
We took a walk that night, but it wasn't the same
We had a fight on the promenade out in the rain
She said she loved me, but she had somewhere to go
She couldn't scream while I held I close
I swore I'd never let her go
Tell me what you wanna know
Oh come on, oh come on, oh come on
There ain't no motive for this crime
Jenny was a friend of mine
So come on, oh come on, oh come on

I know my rights, I've been here all day and it's time
For me to go, so let me know if it's alright
I just can't take this, I swear I told you the truth
She couldn't scream while I held I close
I swore I'd never let her go

Tell me what you wanna know
Oh come on, oh come on, oh come on
And then you whisper in my ear
I know what you're doing here
So come on, oh come on, oh come on
There ain't no motive for this crime
Jenny was a friend of mine
Oh come on, oh come on, oh come on

This song in my opinion is about a guy being questioned by the cops for having been the last person to see Jenny alive. Hence, the past tense in the title.
From the way the lyrics are described, the singer is very clearly the killer.
I know my rights, I've been here all day and it's time

I just can't take this, I swear I told you the truth
She couldn't scream while I held I close

I think it was based on a real boyfriend-kills-girlfriend case in Las Vegas, from where The Killers hail. Great combo of rock-n-80s-stylee-Duran stuff.

Would have made sense to put the whole murder trilogy on one album, but hey still a great song

They're turning the whole Murder trilogy into a mini-movie (about 25 minutes long).

Says so in NME.

This is a great opener to the album…I love the guitar on it! I think its basically a song about a guy who kills a girl, Jenny…and he's now being interrogated for it....maybe she was going to break up with him, or they had been fighting… “she said she loved me, but she had somewhere to go”….theres definetly a jealousy tone here….which teams with the jealousy in mr brightside and also midnight show. Maybe they embraced to say goodbye and he stabbed her, but her screams were not heard as her face was in his chest…..great imagery in this song, one of my faves on the album.

I agree w/ rizo, definitely a boyfriend killing a girlfriend sort of thing. I think he's trying to make them believe that he didn't do it and then he accidentally slips out little details.

"I know my rights, I've been here all day and it's time
For me to go, so let me know if it's alright
I just can't take this, I swear I told you the truth"
that part is him attempting to convince them and himself that he's innocent but then he slips up and says:
"She couldn't scream while I held I close
I swore I'd never let her go"
which to me gives off the vibe that she didn't want to be w/ him and he didn't want to admit that they were over. Great song though. Definitly a fav.

The murder trilogy is on the album. 1st is Mr. Brightside. Where he falls in love with a prostitute. Next is Midnight show, where he sleeps with her, and she becomes pregnant, and he kills the baby. Last is Jenny was a friend of mind, where he kills her.

Well at least that's how I see it.

Has anyone thought that maybe by the line "She couldn't scream while I held her close" meant that when he found Jenny again, he was only holding her comfortingly in her last moments? I like to think that she "couldn't scream when he held her close" because she didn't want to make him feel bad about her death or worry about her. But I"m a romanticizer, so maybe that's just me.

Deamonicus....the murder trilogy is actually jenny, midnight show, and leave the bourbon on the shelf, which is on the new album. "boubon" is the first installment, when he kills the girl after a messy break up, and ive heard the murder involves water...."midnight show" is him disposing of the body, and "jenny" is him trying to justify the murder when he's caught by the cops. They are making a 25 min movie, and apparently the killers want mischa barton to play Jenny, and james spader the kill. Cant wait! my interpretaion is that Mr brightside isnt about a prostitute, but just a woman who makes the guy feel insanely insecure because he loves her so much.

k ppl i'll giv u the whole story.... The trilogy is kicked off by Bourbon On The Shelf, which is mysterious in its self seeing as it has only been played live during the early days and as far as we know, hasn't been recorded yet. However we can almost guarantee to see it in the future...However Midnight Show (which is track 10 of the album), has made an appearance. which starts off harking about lip gloss before veering into far darker territory. The third and final part is Jenny Was A Friend of Mine, fans are unsure in this song whether he is simply laughing at the fact his girl friend has died or whether he is honestly grieving. The trilogy is to be put into a short film near the end of the year and then given away as a prise give away to a limited amount of people. also brandon flowers says.. "There was water involved although he didn’t drown her...” soz its so long lol

this song almost makes me want to cry. i love it though. i think it is about a girlfriend who told her boyfriend she wanted to break up and he couldnt deal with it so, he killed her.
"she couldnt scream as i held her close, i swore i'd never let her go"

then he gets questioned by the cops and he's trying to convince the cops and himself that he is innocent, but of course, he's not.

"I know my rights, I've been here all day and it's time
For me to go, so let me know if it's alright
I just can't take this, I swear I told you the truth"

then, he slips out with the details.

OK everybody this what me and britanny think

Brandon loses someone (girlfriend like person) and Jenny was a rebound who he trys to make in to the girl he lost. So Jenny deals with that and she becomes so upset she trys to end the relationship with brandon...but he wont let her go, so she ends up cheating on him with another guy "she said she loved me but she had somewhere to go"...but she cant take all the stress..so Brandon ends up killing her mentally..so the cops are interigating him with questions on the murder..so Brandon wasnt the physical killer of Jenny.
were making it into a short film

I love this song and 'Midnight Show', there's such darkness that goes so well with the glamorous sound of their music- this song *is* pretty self-explanatory, when taken in context with what the Killers have said about the mini-movie. I hope that when it's done it's released so that everyone can see it, not just competition winners.
But anyway, I just wondered if anyone had noticed that Brandon has linked 'Jenny' and 'Midnight Show' through the line 'she said she loved me' which is sung in the same vicious way in this song and (quietly, I had to know it was there to hear it) at the end of 'Midnight Show'. Whoever the killer is in the movie, Jenny saying that she loved him seems to be integral to his motive. So I'm going with the 'she was dumping him, he couldn't handle it so he killed her' theory myself.

This song is about ofter he kills Jenny. Or thats what I think. It starts with Midnight shw where he kills her. Now he is being interigized by the police. "There is no motive for this crime" He had no reason to do it. "Jenny was a friend of mine" he's saying, Why would I kill her. She's my friends. I think Mr.Brightside has something to do with it also. "She had somewhere to go." the other guy in Brightside. This alblum/movie reminds me of American Idiot by greenday. Rock Operaish. The way it tells a story, not the sond.
