Lyrics for Somebody Told Me as interpreted by Linger:

Somebody Told Me Lyrics
Breaking my back just to know your name
Seventeen tracks and I've had it with this game
I'm breaking my back just to know your name
But heaven ain't close in a place like this
Anything goes but don't blink you might miss
Cause heaven ain't close in a place like this
I said heaven ain't close in a place like this
Bring it back down, bring it back down tonight
Never thought I'd let a rumour ruin my moonlight

Well somebody told me
You had a boyfriend
Who looked like a girlfriend
That I had in February of last year
It's not confidential
I've got potential

Ready? Let's roll onto something new
Taking its toll and I'm leaving without you
Ready? Let's roll onto something new
But heaven ain't close in a place like this
Anything goes but don't blink you might miss

Cause heaven ain't close in a place like this
I said heaven ain't close in a place like this
Bring it back down, bring it back down tonight
Never thought I'd let a rumour ruin my moonlight

Well somebody told me
You had a boyfriend
Who looked like a girlfriend
That I had in February of last year
It's not confidential
I've got potential
A rushin', a rushin' around

Pace yourself from me
I said maybe baby please
But I just don't know now
When all I wanna do is try

Somebody told me
You had a boyfriend
Who looked like a girlfriend
That I had in February of last year
It's not confidential
I've got potential
A rushin', a rushin' around

I'm pretty sure that he's not saying that the "boyfriend" is actually a female, that the two are lesbian. He's making fun off the girl's boyfriend (male, I believe), because he and the girl used to be together, she broke up with him and he wants to make her regret her decision.

"Cause heaven ain't close in a place like this" They are all living sinful lives.

"Ready? Let's roll onto something new
Taking its toll and I'm leaving without you"
He's moving on, going to find a new girl. He's not looking for anything serious, just a physical relationship, by the way he so casually says roll onto something new.

"Pace yourself from me" Again, he's making her feel bad for leaving him and is letting her know that he's hard to get over.

Basically, he wanted her, they met, were sleeping together, she stopped sleeping with him and started sleeping with someone else, he found out by someone else (a rumour), he realises there was more than sex to them, he tries to make her see what she's missing and starts insulting her current guy, he tries to move on, find someone else to sleep with, to ease the pain of the lonely nights without her. What sinful lives we lead.

I think everyone is overanalyzing this song actually. Yeah the whole bit about the guy picking up a girl in a bar is on point but that's all I agree with.

I think he's been trying so long to figure out how to talk to her that finally he's just going to go for it. When he gets up to talking to her he doesn't know what to say so he says that somebody told me bit. It personifies the stupid crap guys say when trying to pick up a girl. It makes no sense but it's all he could come up with on the spot. This is also a way for him to figure out if she's single because she could say "um that's funny but you must be thinking of someone else because I'm single". I think it's honestly just a nervous attempt at a pick up line.

hey so heres what i think

theres a boy (boy 1) who's gay and then theres another boy (boy 2).

k with me so far?

now boy 2 has a girlfriend. and his friend...whos boy 1 is gay so he only lieks guys.

but secretly...boy 1 is only pretending to be gay. and he is in love with boy 2's girlfriend.

still with me?

so one day ...after boy 2 has broken up with his girlfriend, he finds out that boy 1 and his ex gf are going out. he is very confused:S:S:S:S

Therefore he sings a song about how somebody told him that you (boy 1) had a boyfriend (because he thot he was gay) who looked liek a girlfriend ( to which he is shocked)

Dunno if this has been said, but I always thought of it as a guy trying to pick up a girl in a bar, but not knowing what to say to her, so he picks something ridiculous in an attempt to find a conversation starter ('Somebody told me...' yada yada yada).
Either that, or the guy is mocking her boyfriend and saying she should go home with him instead.

I thought the "boyfriend who looked like a girlfriend" part was pretty simple. The trick is putting some comma's in.
"Well somebody told me you had a boyfriend, who looked like a girlfriend that I had in February of last year."
His February girlfriend, is now a boy. And somebody is commenting on how much this boyfriend looks like his old girlfriend, because the boyfriend IS his old girlfriend!
Make sense now?

"A boyfriend that looked like a girlfriend". This is not about a sex change at all in my opinion. He tryed to hook up with a girl and probably succeeded but was then told that she had a "boyfriend that looked like a girlfriend". She is actually a lesbian and going out with a girl that he must have previously gone out with. This is important becasue then his previous relationship with the girl could have all been a fake. E-mail me if you think my opnion is wrong.

I think this song has a more figuartive meaning than a literal meaning.
The part that everyone agrees on is that he has been working hard to get this girl's name and attention and when he finally does, he is turned off by a rumor. In my opinion, the rumor is that she is/was dating the brother of his ex-girlfriend. Her boyfriend could very well look similar to his ex-girlfriend if they were related. I think it is just a clever way of saying that he doesn't want to get involved with a girl that has dated his ex's brother.
And perhaps there is even something more sinister...he has "potential," so perhaps he is suspicious that he could be taken advantage of because of her relationship to his ex. Afterall, "anything goes in a place like this."

i've always thought that brandon was talking to his ex's partner... cos in the beginning he's going, "breaking my back just to know your name..." then in the chorus he says "Well somebody told me
You had a boyfriend, Who looked like a girlfriend, That I had in February of last year..." does anyone think the same?

the chicks a dyke... in my opinion :)

and childlight haha.. i see where ur coming from!

i think this was a great some in the sence it really kick started the killers to their popularity - cuz this is done in the style that all those pop stations love, its catchy and u can dance to it.

but ive gotta say that its nothing special... compare this to the great "Mr Brightside" or even the lesser known "show you how" "replacable" and "sweet talk" and it just doesnt measure up.

its a good song 4 a bit of fun that almost everyone can get into... but if u r a tru killers fan or hav a tru appreciation for music i implore you to listen to almost any of the killers lesser known songs and they will blow your mind :)

If you guys are done with the pedestrian butchering, note that this is a band that doesn't spell everything out for you (think Bush). They say about 1/2 what they mean (with Bush, you get about 1/3 or 1/4). That's what makes it artistic, in addition to the mass appeal of the sound.

He's a straight guy singing to a straight ex who is dating a straight man who was born a man. He's jealous, lonely and hurt from the breakup, and he's bitter that she appears to be moving on faster than he is. The line "looks like a girlfriend that I had in February of last year" is pure sour grapes.

Remember the line "it's all in my head, but..." from Mr. Brightside. That's the level of pain he's working. The second line "Seventeen tracks and I've had it" indicates some continuity.

Put that all together, and you have a guy trying desperately to get some dig in at his ex, hoping to make her feel as bad as he does. The best he can do is hurl a couple "sour grapes" insults at her new guy. First that he looks like a girl, and second that he's used goods (I had her last year).

That's all.

first of all, he could be bi, i could really care less. but he did say in an interview that it really was a girlfriend who looked like a boyfriend that she had...he said it worked so he'd through it in. it really was a boyfriend who was a guy, and a girlfriend who was a girl.

well im not sure, but i think that hes waiting to pick up this girl, hears that she has a boyfriend or whatever, but decides its just a rumor, he's not gonna give up, but then after awhile hes like maybe i should just leave. and then maybe she decides to be with him but is going really fast? idk but its a sick song.

THIS SONG!

I NEVER UNDERSTOOD IT, UNTIL I SAID IT OVER AND OVER AND OVER!

look at it this way:

it says 'somebody told me that you had a boyfriend who looked like a girlfriend that i had in february of last year'

look at it this way 'in february of last year, somebody told me that you had a boyfriend, who looked like a girlfriend I had'.

does it make more sense, or is that just me?

i think this should be taken pretty much at its face value. my 2 cents:

he's 'breaking his back' just to know this girl's name at a bar/club

then somebody tells him something that 'ruins his moonlight' - she actually has a boyfriend. who looked like a 'girlfriend he had last feb' (making fun of the bf).

but he doesn't give up - he still tries to get her to 'roll onto something new' (him, the narrator)and tries to convince her that he has 'potential' (becos he doesn't look like a girl?! hehe)

it's supposed to be about the lead singer being gay or bi or w.e. "boyfriend who liked like a girlfriend"

the whole thing with the chorus is kinda strange but this is what it could be.

"The boyfriend" who looked liked a girlfriend he had had might mean that the boyfriend was decietful just like a girlfriend he used to have.?

duh! he's tlking to this girl in a club or something...
the chorus is saying pretty much that he heard she was seen with an ex-g/f of his...by "somebody told me you had a boyfriend who looked like a girlfriend I had in February of last year," he's pretty much saying "I heard you're lesbian and u dated an ex-g/f of mine, but I'm hoping that my source was wrong and it was just a guy who looked a lot like my ex-g/f"...it's not that hard to figure out...oh and she's not really paying any attention to him anyways and he's saying he's got a ton of potential to be the perfect lover for her...that's wat he means by "I've got potential rushing and rushing around"....it's really pretty easy to figure out...

idk if this has been said, but the killers actually started playing in drag bars (not that they were in drag). i have a feeling that this song may be about some incident that had happened to them early on their career (in one of these drag bars)

"Well somebody told me
You had a boyfriend."
- Yup easy enough to understand.

"Who looked like a girlfriend
That I had in February of last year"

- The person that told him that she had a boyfriend looks like a girlfriend he had in feb last year. Probably meaning that he has had a lot of girlfriends and a lot of girls remind him of ex's

"It's not confidential
I've got potential"

- Probably why he gets all the women, but can't understand why this girl doesn't want him.
