Lyrics for Somebody Told Me as interpreted by Linger:

Somebody Told Me Lyrics
Breaking my back just to know your name
Seventeen tracks and I've had it with this game
I'm breaking my back just to know your name
But heaven ain't close in a place like this
Anything goes but don't blink you might miss
Cause heaven ain't close in a place like this
I said heaven ain't close in a place like this
Bring it back down, bring it back down tonight
Never thought I'd let a rumour ruin my moonlight

Well somebody told me
You had a boyfriend
Who looked like a girlfriend
That I had in February of last year
It's not confidential
I've got potential

Ready? Let's roll onto something new
Taking its toll and I'm leaving without you
Ready? Let's roll onto something new
But heaven ain't close in a place like this
Anything goes but don't blink you might miss

Cause heaven ain't close in a place like this
I said heaven ain't close in a place like this
Bring it back down, bring it back down tonight
Never thought I'd let a rumour ruin my moonlight

Well somebody told me
You had a boyfriend
Who looked like a girlfriend
That I had in February of last year
It's not confidential
I've got potential
A rushin', a rushin' around

Pace yourself from me
I said maybe baby please
But I just don't know now
When all I wanna do is try

Somebody told me
You had a boyfriend
Who looked like a girlfriend
That I had in February of last year
It's not confidential
I've got potential
A rushin', a rushin' around

I think this song is about rumours in general, and the chorus was just a metephor/example. I agree with the earlier people who said not to take it so literally.

" Breaking my back just to know your name,
Seventeen tracks and I've had it with this game"
- Game as in rumours, he can't figure out what to believe and it's not only pissing him off, but hurting his feelings.

"Anything goes but don't blink you might miss"
- This could mean that there are loads of lies and things, but sometimes it's better to listen to them since they may be true.

"Cause heaven ain't close in a place like this
I said heaven ain't close in a place like this"
- On Earth, whereever you are, not many people are very honest and it's generally a bad place.

"Never thought I'd let a rumour ruin my moonlight"
- Obvious meaning, a rumour is stopping him from doing what he wants to do.

"Ready? Let's roll onto something new
Taking its toll and I'm leaving without you"
- I think this says that he just wants to forget what he heard because it's starting to take over him and again, it's preventing him from doing what his first intentions were.

"A rushin', a rushin' around"
- Lies spread around quickly.

"But I just don't know now
When all I wanna do is try"
- He just wants to forget but he can't ecause he just so confused.

Hope this is helpful. I say this with many songs, but metephors can be quite useful in songs since they can have countless meanings - appealing to many people. However, they can be annoying since you may never know the true meaning or you can't get the true point out. Sometimes though, there are no real ways to describe something so metephors do come in handy.

i really like End of Fashion and to a certain degree, i like the Killers. I think they could improve their voice like most other bands of this genre.

I think that when he says:
"Anything goes but don't blink you might miss"
He is playing with two meanings: "you might miss", as "you might not realise what's happening", and "you might miss" as "you may be a Miss or you may be a Mister"

This song is about a guy who has heard a rumor that his girlfriend used to be a lesbian, and the girl she was with was a girl he used to date. I was listening one day and I just thought "holly crap! So thats what it's about!" I mean it totally makes sense:

Well somebody told me
You had a boyfriend
Who looked like a girlfriend
That I had in February of last year
It's not confidential
I've got potential

If you ask me, it's not about lesbians or bisexuals. Instead, I think it has nothing to do with girls at all. I think the whole idea of role reversal, between being the boy (top) and the girl (bottom). Maybe this guy is talking about a former "girl" friend who switched roles and became a "boy" friend. What proof do I have? Well none. It has the perfect set up though. I mean, they can have people debating about sex changes, and meanwhile, four VERY obvious gay guys get away with making a VERY gay song popular among a VERY homophobic America. Ching Chang.

i like the rumor explanation, and i also like what i thought about it when i first heard the song. it seems like a guy is trying to pick a girl up that he likes (breaking my back just to know your name) and he's willing to say anything to get her attention even though some of it might not make a whole lot of sense (somebody told me you had a boyfriend who looked like a girlfriend that I had) just to make any kind of connection between them. and as soon as he's got her attention, he tries to bring the conversation back to him (it's not confidential, i've got potential)

dunno, it's just a cute song that probably isn't too serious.

Okay, if I have to read another post about whether the people in the song/Brandon are gay/lesbian, I will puke. It really is an eye-opener as to what society has become.
I had this whole post put together, with quotes from tons of members that I thought got the meaning right, and I was cutting and pasting it onto the next pages when I was reading and going to the next page, but I accidentally copied something else on top of it, and couldn't get my post back. So I'll just put a couple quotes from some people on this page, and tell you how I feel, instead.

LOL rachel you are totally right! Annoying how so many people are obsessed with the gay/lesbian thing, right?

I partially agree with you, niftyspark. I think that people are looking too far into it, and it's just some rumors that were made up, maybe as a pick-up line, or maybe just as nonsense.

But, I'll also go along the track of "shut up you people, it is not about being gay or lesbian, and who the heck cares what Brandon is, and it's just supposed to make fun of how rumors can be taken so seriously these days". I'm more for this than the actual "picking up a girl in a bar" story.

Come on people!!! You're being ridiculous! It really is sad that these days, if a band puts out a couple songs that could possibly be gay if you think about them in some shallow way, people will go all crazy, attacking the band, just for some good gossip and/or imperfection of the band. Give it a break, you guys! I love the Killers, and don't really care about their sexuality. It's the music that counts. But, I'm not going to try to fool anyone by saying that I don't care about the Killers as people, because I do, and so far they seem really nice and modest. Brandon is married, so what does it matter if he's bisexual? That is completely the business of him, and his wife, and no one else.

Judging from the mentioned interviews, it seems like "the rumor" chorus is only something made up to make fun of rumors and/or get a girl's attention. Sounds like Brandon is making a joke in a few of them, and laughing at all of us scrambling for the meaning.

Just forget it. Seriously.

-hope i could enlighten y'all, and peace-

I think this song is actually an insult, not meant to say that Brandon Flowers is gay. He's married! Still, I think its pretty funny how silly of an insult some people can come up with!

I know for a fact that Brandon is Bisexual, he's basically said it already so I don't think there's any disputing that. I think this song is about sexual ambiguity and identity.

I think this song is the latter, dont read too much into it :-)
