Lyrics for Somebody Told Me as interpreted by Linger:

Somebody Told Me Lyrics
Breaking my back just to know your name
Seventeen tracks and I've had it with this game
I'm breaking my back just to know your name
But heaven ain't close in a place like this
Anything goes but don't blink you might miss
Cause heaven ain't close in a place like this
I said heaven ain't close in a place like this
Bring it back down, bring it back down tonight
Never thought I'd let a rumour ruin my moonlight

Well somebody told me
You had a boyfriend
Who looked like a girlfriend
That I had in February of last year
It's not confidential
I've got potential

Ready? Let's roll onto something new
Taking its toll and I'm leaving without you
Ready? Let's roll onto something new
But heaven ain't close in a place like this
Anything goes but don't blink you might miss

Cause heaven ain't close in a place like this
I said heaven ain't close in a place like this
Bring it back down, bring it back down tonight
Never thought I'd let a rumour ruin my moonlight

Well somebody told me
You had a boyfriend
Who looked like a girlfriend
That I had in February of last year
It's not confidential
I've got potential
A rushin', a rushin' around

Pace yourself from me
I said maybe baby please
But I just don't know now
When all I wanna do is try

Somebody told me
You had a boyfriend
Who looked like a girlfriend
That I had in February of last year
It's not confidential
I've got potential
A rushin', a rushin' around

Oh hush. If you don't like this song, then why are you commenting on it? This is a great song, and screw all you naysayers.

The rest I'm not sure about, but I think the "seventeen tracks" part is how long he's been waiting. They're probably at a club and he's been talking to her for 17 tracks, trying to pick her up or whatever, and she's playing games with his mind.

I think Dlewis and and Zaphlin are right.
It's hilarious how many people here are saying "Isn't it obvious?" Like everything they say is right. Song interpretation isn't so literal. I mean, geez, do you think Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds is about a sparkly girl in the sky?
This is also *my* opinion, but I wanted to look deeper into the lyrics.
I think the song is sort of about the high school environment, how rumors run rampant and are just made to hurt people. The part that says "Somebody told me that you had a boyfriend that looked like a girlfriend that I had in February of last year" Is commenting on how ridiculous rumors get.
In my opinion, it's about liking a girl that he gets made fun of for liking and the rumors start getting to him ("Never thought I'd let a rumor ruin my moonlight")
Does anyone agree?

Never thought I'd let a rumor ruin my moonlight

i always interpreted this to mean that his old high school rumour come back to haunt him and he is afraid it will ruin his career......his moonlight.....his fame. and the somebody tol me that you had a girlfriend bit is just to sho how ridiculous these rumours can be....yet they are still haunting him.....still getting to him

This song is about a guy who fell for his best friend he didnt know she had a boyfriend but somebody told him. The songs "Mr Brightside", "Midnight show" and "Jenny was a friend of mine are the follow up. The full story is about the guy falling for his friend Jenny him getting jealous when he found out she had a boyfriend (this song), then him killing her because he couldnt have her (midnight show), him getting questioned about the murder and going to jail (Jenny was a friend) and him getting out of jail (Mr Brightside) e.g. the lyrics coming out of my cage and jealousy turns these saints into the seas.

Well, in my humble opinion, without reading anyone else's thoughts, I think it's about a guy whose friend says a girl has a boyfriend, but he actually sees her with a girl and he wants her to give guys a chance. Instead of like, being lesbian.
I'm probably wrong though.

On second thought, the high school environment idea sounds like much more sense (:

lol sevenduster

anyway dunno if i've posted on this or not but it has bisexual undertones and since the band is from vegas (plastic surgery) perhaps it is about sex changes who knows?

oh and if you like the killers do yourself a favour and check out New Order, I think the killers got their name from a film clip of theirs if I recall correctly. Anyway they are definatly an influece on the Killers' sound

I really think its about the rapid change in music. It doesn't seem like many other people feel that way, but the song seems to have more meaning if it is about a rapid change in music. It just seem like The Killers want to make timeless music and Brandon is asking the music trend to pace itself for them.

Thank you deeperthought and bunyipkitty and all the like, I totally agree, no gay or lesbian theme in my opinion. Just an insult thrown at her about her boyfriend, (I like to imagine with a smirk/laugh when said) in hopes to skew her view of her stupid boyfriend. "It's not confidential" just struck me as a good companion rhyme for the line he really needed to include "I've got potential". I write songs and poetry and have tons of friends that write songs and sometimes you have to stretch a bit to get the rhyme you need. I think I can speak for most... I know that in every piece of work there is a little bit of "filler" added for various reasons. I have been in poetry class where we analyze each others work and I have often giggled at some the analysis on certain words that I "HAD" to put in there to make it all work that in the end didn't mean much. But the whole piece put together portrayed the story, idea, emotion I set out to convey. I might be wrong of course, but sense the first time I heard this song it sounded pretty straight forward (pun intended) and not a "hidden" meaning type.
And igywigie, come on, you made me laugh pretty hard. That's the biggest stretch I've come along in quite a while but I admire your imagination though...really. But I think you may be "just a bit outside"
"If your going to rhyme, you have to bs sometimes" :)

This song's old, but I'm commenting on it anyway. It's tongue in cheek, edgy. The guy's heard a rumor a girl he's dated is dating another girl -- it's that old silly paranoia of a guy thinking he was such a miserable and poor lover to a girl that he actually drove her off of liking guys, not that it's actually genetics and the girl most likely realizes it and admits it to herself.

He's at the club the second girl frequents, not being able to put his mind to rest until he sees for himself. Heaven knows he can't go off and have his fun with this knowledge (he "never thought a rumor would ruin his moonlight/good time"). The club's hellish and he's been there a while, nervously watching the girl, approaching her about it. It's not literal, but rather sarcastic -- "Somebody told me your 'boyfriend' looks a lot like my old girlfriend."

This girl doesn't even pay him any attention -- torturing him with silence, not even saying her name, so he leaves in frustration. I think he was even considering, in an attempt to prove his "manliness," taking this new girlfriend home and trying to "turn her" (Leaving without you/Maybe, baby...all I wanna do is try), but that's obviously unrealistic.

lol this song could be any simpler? its about a girl turning lesbian and dating another girl because the guy cant satisfy her. even though he think that he can satisfy (i got potential) this song is perfect if you watch Seinfeld because there was an episode when George saw his ex girlfriend with another girl and confirmed to him that he has turned her into a lesbian...
