Lyrics for Somebody Told Me as interpreted by Linger:

Somebody Told Me Lyrics
Breaking my back just to know your name
Seventeen tracks and I've had it with this game
I'm breaking my back just to know your name
But heaven ain't close in a place like this
Anything goes but don't blink you might miss
Cause heaven ain't close in a place like this
I said heaven ain't close in a place like this
Bring it back down, bring it back down tonight
Never thought I'd let a rumour ruin my moonlight

Well somebody told me
You had a boyfriend
Who looked like a girlfriend
That I had in February of last year
It's not confidential
I've got potential

Ready? Let's roll onto something new
Taking its toll and I'm leaving without you
Ready? Let's roll onto something new
But heaven ain't close in a place like this
Anything goes but don't blink you might miss

Cause heaven ain't close in a place like this
I said heaven ain't close in a place like this
Bring it back down, bring it back down tonight
Never thought I'd let a rumour ruin my moonlight

Well somebody told me
You had a boyfriend
Who looked like a girlfriend
That I had in February of last year
It's not confidential
I've got potential
A rushin', a rushin' around

Pace yourself from me
I said maybe baby please
But I just don't know now
When all I wanna do is try

Somebody told me
You had a boyfriend
Who looked like a girlfriend
That I had in February of last year
It's not confidential
I've got potential
A rushin', a rushin' around

"Breaking my back just to know your name
Seventeen tracks and I've had it with this game
I'm breaking my back just to know your name"

He's trying hard to attract this 'girl' at a dirty old bar, "But heaven ain't close in a place like this".

"Anything goes but don't blink you might miss"
You might miss that this is really a man.

"Cause heaven ain't close in a place like this
I said heaven ain't close in a place like this"
Again emphasizing the type of place he is at...

"Never thought I'd let a rumour ruin my moonlight"
Never thought that he'd let the rumor that this girl was really a guy ruin his attraction...

"Well somebody told me
You had a boyfriend
Who looked like a girlfriend
That I had in February of last year"
Apparently his ex-GF was really a man, who is now dating a girl.

"Pace yourself from me
I said maybe baby please
But I just don't know now
When all I wanna do is try"
He is confused on now that he found out his (ex)gf was really a man. He thinks he wants to try and work through it...

hmm... i've been taking it to mean he's saying "look, that guy you're with looks like this girl i dated once, so why don't you dump him and date me instead!" Though the idea that the girl is a lesbian and the "boyfriend" is actually his old girlfriend makes a lot of sense, too. crazy!

ok, i really hope this someone else reads this. THIS SONG IS NOT ABOUT A GIRL, OR GUY!!!

This song is, oddly enough about, WRITING SONGS. dead give away with "17 tracks and ive had it with this game."

Breaking my back....makes more sense in context with the chorus
Its not about a feminite man, or androgeny. Its an illustration that what is cool/hip/trendy today maybe totally passed in a few months. Musical trends are moving so fast that what is sexy for a man today may be feminine in the future.

Breaking my back to know your name. means its hard to keep up with what fast musical changes today. musical fads are moving 100 mph

Dont blink you might miss. If you dont jump on the bandwagon your chance/15 minutes. might just pass you

heaven aint close in a place like this......well u can prolly figure this out now. that heaven aint close to them in Las vegas, sin city. All the killers did wasgive the people pop crap that they want to hear, theres no heaven for anyone who delivers hits by "the forumla."

Its almost like incubus song megalomaniac "your no jesus, your no elvis." the killers are also well aware they havent dont anything to be highly merited.

Anything goes in a place like this.....with this fast back breaking musicalpace its almost like any crap that a band comes up with can get played.

it sounds awsome and it is a serious song, but is some one gay or lez or bi?i like this song, becaz i am thinking he had been told his exgirl friend had a boy friend who looked like his girl friend from febuary-so...maybe Brandon was in a bar and had too much to drink so he thought he saw exgirl friend from febuary but she looked like a guy...and its not confidential ,meaning every body knows so that is why he wrote a song about it!well, its a good song and i dont vare if he is bisexual or gay,im not dating him!

what i see in this song is that he was this club or bar or somewhere, and he met this girl that he really started to like. But it was a rumor that she's a lezbian or bi. and the chorus is like their saying, "her last boyfriend, wasn't a guy at all" and how it looked like his old girlfriend, is that after they broke up, she got with this new girl, becomine a lezbian or bi. but hes not sure if this chaos is true, and thats why in the last line in the first verse where he says, "Never thought I'd let a rumour ruin my moonlight" because he doesn't want to find out that it might be true. but thats what i see.

Somebody said something about how rumors get twisted. I think you're onto something. It just proves how ridiculous rumours can be!! WTF? And they can still provoke so much jealousy. Man, rumours ARE so ridiculous.

ummm it has nothing to do with looks with the"You had a boyfriend
Who looked like a girlfriend
That I had in February of last year" he's saying that her boyfriend seems like a girl that he had in february of last year that he dumped obviously because she wasn't good enough...catch what i'm saying?

i think its a lot simpler than the bisexual/drag/transexual theories.
I agree with the part about him being at a bar, or somewhere with music and he's waited 17 tracks. He heard she got a boyfriend, and hes a bit pissed off (wouldnt u be?) so hes just snapping back to insult the guy! When im into a guy n i see him with his gf, a comment i might make is "whoa! she looks like a guy!" so... its quite simple actually! i dont know why everyone is fixated on the bisexual issue and just interepreting most songs with some gay theme. :s

This song is great. It never ceases to amaze me how the Killers manage to put so much emotion into their songs, and create such an amazing "image" through their use of lyrics and instrumentals.
I think that this song is taking place at a dance club, or at least a nightclub with a dance floor. The person singing the song is at the club and has noticed a girl who he is really attracted to, and has been trying to get her attention (breaking his back) for the whole night (seventeen tracks is a long time). He obviously has a big ego, as he is waiting for her to come to him, but his curiosity gets the better of him and he starts to ask around. What he finds out about her threatens to ruin his night (moonlight). She is, according to the people he has talked to, going out with a guy who is really not good enough for her. This is just too much for him to take, so he just has to make a move. He goes up to this girl and tells her how it is. Saying that he heard that she was going out with a guy who was more of a girl and if she was interested in a real man, "it’s not confidential, I’ve got potential."
In summation, I think it’s a song about a guy who is infatuated with a girl but can’t understand what it is that she sees in the guy who she is going out with, and thinks that he would be a hell of a lot better for her.
I really don’t think that there was any gay or lesbian innuendo in this song what so ever, just a really good burn against some guy that the singer took for a pussy. However, these are just my opinions, thanks.

Maybe he's been trying to pick up a girl for a while ("seventeen tracks") but then someone tells him that she has a boyfriend.

Buuut he's put in too much work ("Breaking my back just to know your name") to just walk away and besides he doesn't want to "let a rumour ruin my moonlight" so he tells her that he heard her boyfriend looks like looked like a girlfriend
he had in February last year (clearly an insult and letting her know that he's single) and then goes on to tell her that "It's not confidential I've got potential."

Then again it is a electronic song and the emphasis is on the awesome beat and the dancefloor feel, not on the lyrics.

There are several possible explanations to the chorus:
1) The girl has a "boyfriend" who is actually a woman and the speaker dated this woman before.
2) The speaker dated what he thought was a girl but was actually a guy. The new girl is dating that guy.
3) The Killers wrote an incredibly weird song so that we would go crazy trying to interpret it.

Well, to me, it's about a boy who wants to date a girl in a dance club.
He's really attracted by the girl. So he asks people about her name etc. And the only thing he learns is that her ex-boyfriend looks like his ex-girlfriend. Well, this song is supposed to be funny (i really think so).

He goes towards her and he's so shy, he doesn't know how to do with women that he just says silly things such as "your ex looks like my ex", "i've got potential", or "ready? let's roll onto something new", "maybe ... baby...please". He's rushing around. And of course "he's leaving without her".

He let a rumour ruin his moonlight, he's lost his composure, and to him, it was mainly because of the atmosphere, the great amount of people there are in a dance club. ("heavens ain't close in a place like this". He doesn't feel good to date that girl in that particular place)

I agree with justine&coria,

"You had a boyfriend
Who looked like a girlfriend
That I had in February of last year"

Is suppose to be funny, that she date a guy who was really girly looking guy.
