I'm coming out of my cage
And I've been doing just fine
Gotta gotta be down
Because I want it all
It started out with a kiss
How did it end up like this
It was only a kiss, it was only a kiss
Now I'm falling asleep
And she's calling a cab
While he's having a smoke
And she's taking a drag
Now they're going to bed
And my stomach is sick
And it's all in my head
But she's touching his chest
Now, he takes off her dress
Now, letting me go

I just can't look its killing me
And taking control
Jealousy, turning saints into the sea
Swimming through sick lullabies
Choking on your alibis
But it's just the price I pay
Destiny is calling me
Open up my eager eyes
Cause I'm Mr Brightside

I'm coming out of my cage
And I've been doing just fine
Gotta gotta be down
Because I want it all
It started out with a kiss
How did it end up like this
It was only a kiss, it was only a kiss
Now I'm falling asleep
And she's calling a cab
While he's having a smoke
And she's taking a drag
Now they're going to bed
And my stomach is sick
And it's all in my head
But she's touching his chest
Now, he takes off her dress
Now, letting me go

'Cause I just can't look its killing me
And taking control
Jealousy, turning saints into the sea
Swimming through sick lullabies
Choking on your alibi
But it's just the price I pay
Destiny is calling me
Open up my eager eyes
'Cause I'm Mr Brightside
I never
I never
I never
I never

My Interpretation:Unlike poopancake, I don't see the chorus as the peak of his emotional pain, I see it as his resolution, his intention to get over this girl and get on with his life. He's not being sarcastic, as per poopancake. The great thing about it is it's all so last minute; the turmoil takes up the verse and half the chorus and just when it seems to be all doom and gloom, he finds the strength to see through this moment in time towards a brighter future.

General Comment:This is about his hatred after a breakup and seeing his ex with another man in his head. From the clues in the piece "just the price I pay" could be his self hatred for going too far with the girl.

My Interpretation:I think it is about a threesome. This person thought he could handle it but at the end, he didn't.

My Interpretation:Okay, so I think this song is about not only the jealousy scenario, but Flower's himself.

"I'm coming out of my cage and I've been doing just fine,
gotta gotta be down because I want it all"
-This shows that he was usually a self reserved character, but meeting this girl has changed him, and he is coming out of his shell and discovering himself. He has to be okay with everything, and let anything happen, because he wants the girl so badly.

"It started out with a kiss, how did it end up like this?
It was only a kiss, it was only a kiss!"
-Here, flowers is stating that a kiss isn't meant to mean much, but to him it means a lot more then he ever thought it would, and its ended up playing on his mind! At the end of this stanza Flowers begins to shout it, really stressing his own confusion.

"No he's falling asleep, and she's calling a cab,
while he's having a smoke, and she's taking a drag"
-I think that this is where people get the idea that this girl may have been a prostitute, and once again she has been on the job with another man.

"Now they're going to bed, and my stomach is sick...."
-Flowers maybe knows that this is part of her job, so he knows what to expect when she is away from him. He feels sick at the thought of her being near another man.

"And it's all in my head but she's touching his chest, now
he takes off her dress, now
    let me go"
-Here, he is saying that this might not even be the case, and that he could just be imagining the whole thing. But even so, the imagination is causing him a great deal of emotional pain. "Let Me Go", states that he is not comfortable where he is, and he wants to be broken free from the worrying.

"I just cant look, it's killing me,
    and taking control"
-He cant even think anymore, because it hurts so badly for him. Its taking over his whole life.

"Jealousy, turning saints into the sea,
    swimming through sick lullabies,
    chocking on your alibis~
-Brandon is extremely jealous of every other man that she has ever slept with. He implies that he used to be a saint and didn't do anything wrong, but now he has been changed into an emotional wreck. He is imagining all of these things, but instead of a nice dream about this girl, they are some kind of sick and twisted lullaby that's stuck in his head. He is "Chocking on her alibis", because maybe she lied him, and said that she wouldn't return to her job as a prostitute, but he assumes that she has. And he is choking on her lies, because he was foolish enough to believe them.

"But it's just the price I pay,
    destiny is calling me"
-He is saying here that he is just paying the price, for believing a liar, and falling in love with someone who sells her body to someone else. When he refers to destiny, he implies that his destiny is being there and dealing with the situation, and this helps him keep his chin up, even thought he couldn't be sadder at this point in time. Or maybe that he actually doesn't belong with this woman, and must move on in order to complete his destiny.

    "Open up my eager eyes,
    Cuz i'm Mr Brightside"
-This line is the most dramatic and meaningful, because even though he is hurt, and in pain, he has been brought to his knees by love. He is trying to persevere and get over it, based on his love for this woman. He opens up his "eager eyes", because he is still young and naive at heart believing that she can still change her life, and turn it around for him. He sarcastically refers to himself as "Mr Brightside", saying that he always sees the Brightside of every situation. Sarcastically of course.

This verse and chorus is then repeated, to emphasise the agony he is actually in. He wants other people to sympathise with him and feel his erotic pain.

    "I never"
-Flowers repeats this at the end, I think to show that In all his life, he never thought that it would come to this. It could also mean, never again, will he put himself through that kind of emotional state. Or simply that, the most ironic thing about the whole situation, is that he never even had a clue.

My Interpretation:To me, this song is about flowers and his tendancy to fall too hard, too fast, in ways he cannot even comprehend himself. In this case, he has just found a girl, but to him it is love at first sight. He likes her more then he thought he ever would, as meeting her was probably just a mistake, but as he referes to "destiny" a lot in the song, he shows that it was fate that he happened to meet her! Anway, so whatever happened, obviously means more to him then it did to her, as she is no where to be seen. He is making himself sick by imagining senarious in his head, about her with other men. This has had a big impact on him, as he is so jealous. He never imagined that this is how he would be feeling. When he says "Jealousy, turning saints into the sea", I think he means that before meeting this girl, he was a saint and didn't do anything wrong. But after, his soul has been corrupted by jeaoulsy, and he is now an emotional wreck. He is "choking on her alibis". Because she has lied to him, and gone off with someone else. But he says that he pays the price, because he has fallen too hard and too fast for this woman. At the end, he sarcastically refferes to himself as "Mr Brightside", He is trying to stay positive about the situation, even though for the first time in his life, he has been blinded and twisted in the cruel hands of love. And he has now been brought to his knees, by this beautiful woman.

General Comment:It's a "nice guys finish last" story from the point of view of the nice guy is my personal interpretation of it.

Also, the comment about the movie or whatever with the man who fell in love with the prostitue seems spot on, so I agree with that one the most.

My Interpretation:Mr Brightside isn't about someone cheating on you. It's about the insecurity and jealousy that can rise up and ruin a relationship, breaking down the trust. Think about it: "and it's all in my head".

And in the chorus we have "turning saints into the sea". Women suspected of witchcraft were often thrown into water, and if they drowned were they innocent, if they survived they were a witch, and were to be killed anyway. The exact same thing's going on here, metaphorically. Even if the partner was completely innocent - a "saint", so to speak, the relationship is still being destroyed by the jealousy and insecurity.

"But it's just the price I pay" - of course, a ruined relationship is going to be the price you pay for letting your unfounded jealousy be "taking control". Really, Brandon's encouraging people in the same situation to "open up [their] eager eyes" - to see what's actually going on, to face everything instead of burying your head in the sand.

It's almost bordering on possessiveness though - "gotta gotta be down because I want it all" - there's a controlling side to (him) that wants to monitor (her), and because he can't, he starts inventing scenarios of her cheating on him to justify the resentment he's starting to feel because he doesn't OWN her. There's an insidious side to this relationship, so maybe that's what's meant by him "coming out of [his] cage" - he had this metaphorical cage imposed on him for a reason. Maybe there was a past relationship he ruined in a similar way, and he's tried to repress himself so the same doesn't happen, but he finds himself acting the same as before, and feels this is what he will always be - "destiny is calling me". And yet this optimism and hope that he can shake this insecurity off makes him believe he is "Mr Brightside", even though he knows "I never" can change.

My Interpretation:"I'm coming out of my cage
And I've been doing just fine"

He's a shy person who's doing really well at breaking out of his shell.

    Gotta gotta be down
    Because I want it all

He has to be down to do anything because there is something he wants.

It started out with a kiss
How did it end up like this
It was only a kiss, it was only a kiss

He met a girl and their relationship started out with a kiss, but led to something bigger.

    Now I'm falling asleep
    And she's calling a cab
    While he's having a smoke
    And she's taking a drag
    Now they're going to bed
    And my stomach is sick

The girl is leaving him and taking a cab to another guy's house.

And it's all in my head
    But she's touching his chest
Now, he takes off her dress
    Now, letting me go

He can picture in his head them having sex and her letting him go.

I just can't look its killing me
    And taking control
Jealousy, turning saints into the sea
    Swimming through sick lullabies
    Choking on your alibis
But it's just the price I pay
    Destiny is calling me
    Open up my eager eyes
    Cause I'm Mr Brightside

He can't look at them together because it's making him lose his mind. Jealousy is driving him crazy, turning things that were good and he used to enjoy into bad and scary things. He's choking on the excuses she's made about why they can't be together. He's always looking at the pessimistic side of things, and he needs to hear some good new. He sarcastically calls himself "Mr. Brightside"
