Lyrics for Aching to Pupate as interpreted by tasteslikeG0LD

Aching to Pupate Lyrics
Aching to pupate
Aching to pupate
Aching to pupate
Aching to pupate
Aching to pupate
Aching to pupate
Aching to pupate
Aching to pupate
Pupate
Pupate
Pupate
Pupate
Pupate

I should peddle butterflies
There's a shortage in the city
I'll stand on a street corner
All mysterious and giddy
When the passersby pass by
I will open up my trench coat
They will see the butterflies
Dangling like fake Rolexes

Every morning I wake up
With a purpose and a smirk
I'll put on a fake mustache
I'll drink Heineken, eat cornflakes
Then I'll call my mom and dad
Tell them that I'm doing fine
Or I'll write a tipsy letter
To a real good friend of mine
Or I'll jump up on the bed
Waltzing madly with the broomstick
But before I leave the house
I will fill my lips with lipstick

But peddling is a dirty sport
There's competition in the city
Everyone is on a street corner
All mysterious and giddy
Some are selling bags and shoes
Some are selling books and gold
I've been standing here for days
Not one butterfly's been sold
And how I'm...

Aching to pupate
Aching to pupate
Aching to pupate
Aching to pupate
Aching to pupate
Aching to pupate
Aching to pupate
Aching to pupate
Pupate
Pupate
Pupate
Pupate
Pupate

the first time i heard this i thought it was about sharing something.
like...you know every ones looking for that something that will make them happy.
and who the fuck doesnt like butterflies?
everyone likes butterflies.
so maybe it is about adolescence or inner beauty or some shit.
or maybe its about helping people be happy, even though thats hard.

i think its about how people no longer pay attention to inner beauty, like the butterfly inside her coat...

Yeah I also think that it's about her being an artist. How she's aching to pupate into a musician and not just pretend to be one - like this girl is trying to be adult by putting on lipstick.

Her songs are like her butterflies. Soon-to-be beautiful, waiting to pupate, but sometimes it feels like they are fake rolexes. She said in an interview that she felt crude writing songs because of all great classical musicians who have written masterpieces.
And obviously there's competition in the city of New York.

But as we now the butterflies became known and people want them more than books and gold and stuff nowadays :)

I think the song reflects on her own experience of being an artist in such a gritty place as the world we live in. I think her creative psyche (in latin means butterfly or breath) , her muse is partly her own inner girl. It would seem that the cardinal years in her life were those years when she arrived in NYC and that a lot of her "creative juice" comes from those Years. It is also just lovely poetry and very funny too. I don't think she had a message accept her fun with the images. I adore this song!

Also, to add... I read an interview with her where she said she has no f*ing idea what half her songs mean anyway and she hates it when people ask her... so if it means an ugly hooker to you, then it's an ugly hooker, or a flasher, or a young girl... it's pretty abstract, and that's the beauty of her writing. So no more YIKES-ing!! He he.

Wow... I love this site. It's so funny how we all see something so different in all these songs..
I always thought this song was about a flasher. He's totally crazy, wears a fake moustache and lipstick, stands on the street corner with all the other vendors who are selling stuff but then, he opens up his trenchcoat !!!! Ok. No one wants to buy what he's got in there... and he just can't understand why. haha!

I think she wants the city to pupate. We have a shortage of butterflies, innocent beauty in one of its purest forms. But we're so unevolved that we wont buy any butterflies because we don't know that we're lacking them.

Ugly hooker? yikes
I think it's about change and about appreciating beauty without putting a pricetag on it. Plus, butterflies are readily available; you see them often. So no one wants one, they're not rare enough or special enough. Other than that, it's just a neat character peice. She's got a lot of songs that are stories about people she's made up in her head. :) I do that too

You don't have to know a hooker or be a hooker to write songs about them. Regina is a storyteller.

awesome twist in your comment nemequittepas and i love paris in the rain! sorry is this message is posted twice i'm sending this from work and i got an error message the first time i submitted. but i believe that she is standing on that street corner excited to find other people that love the beautiful butterflies just as much as her and nothing could bring her down. eventually someone with 2 eyeballs at maybe even 1 ! will walk by and see the gorgeous butterflies and regina's amazing smile and realise the beauty we stomp on everyday. also i always thought she said "they will see the butterflies
dangling like they grow like siths" now the rolex thing is starting to make sence but i kind of wanted to make you all try and listen to the song one more time ;)

to me, as a angsty teenager, this song is about a girl who is going through adolescense and is herself, her joyful happy self who enjoys life. such lines as

"or i'll jump on the bed waltzing madly with the broomstick
but before i leave the house i will fill my lips with lipstick"

and

"i'll stand on a street corner
all mysterious and giddy"

suggest that to me.

but then:

"but peddling is a dirty sport
lots of competition in the city
everyone is on a street corner
all mysterious and giddy"

there are other girls. this girl wants to receive attention and admiration, for the beauty of herself she is discovering. (the butterflies she is selling)

"some are selling bags and shoes
some are selling books and gold
i've been standing here for days
not one butterfly's been sold"

the problem is, these other girls have things that people want, that people will give attention to. "bags and shoes, books and gold"

and she wants attention and love, a lot:
"and how i'm aching to pupate"

so, basically, regina is singing about me.

this song is so pretty, but it makes me sad, how she was so excited about her beautiful idea to brighten up and beautify the city and then no one wants to buy the butterflies and how disappointing that must be.

and her want to transform into something beautiful as well is so pretty, ahhhh! i just cant get enough of this song.

Ooooh,
I love this song.
It's like she just picked up a book on butterflies and was like "Hey...that word is cool."

butterflies pupate when they turn from caterpillars to their butteryfly form. def. to go through a pupal stage (The nonfeeding stage between the larva and adult in the metamorphosis of holometabolous insects, during which the larva typically undergoes complete transformation within a protective cocoon or hardened case).

Of course, this is symbolic of her longing to change...

Obviously? Ugly Hooker? I can understand how you would come to that conclusion, but I don't think that's what the song is about...To me it's just really fun imagery about selling butterflies, and about waiting to get through puberty...To finally transform! I am kind of reminded in the rose petal scene in American Beauty: A girl opens up her trenchcoat and a flood of beautiful butterfiles fly out...Cool...It's also sad, beacuse no one wants to buy butterflies, they don't mind matericalistic things like bags and shoes, but no one wants a peice of real beauty...sigh...
