Lyrics for Hide and Seek as interpreted by music*ismyboyfriend

Hide and Seek Lyrics
Where are we?
What the hell is going on?
The dust has only just begun to fall
Crop circles in the carpet
Sinking feeling

Spin me around again and rub my eyes
This can't be happening
When busy streets a mess with people
Would stop to hold their heads heavy

Hide and seek
Trains and sewing machines
All those years
They were here first

Oily marks appear on walls
Where pleasure moments hung before
The takeover, the sweeping insensitivity
Of this still life

Hide and seek
Trains and sewing machines
Blood and tears
They were here first

Mm what'cha say?
Mm, that you only meant well
Well of course you did

Mm what'cha say?
Mm that it's all for the best
Of course it is

Mm what'cha say?
Mm that it's just what we need
You decided this?

Mm what'cha say?
Mm what did you say?

Ransom notes keep falling out your mouth
Mid-sweet-talk newspaper word cutouts (paper word cutouts)
Speak no feeling; no, I don't believe you
You don't care a bit
You don't care a bit

yeah it was perfect for the season finally, it was really weird though, i wouldnt have expected this song for either of the two places they put it in. For Caleb's funeral i would have expected something sadder...
i dunno what the songs about though, maybe its about not hiding from your problems, that just creates more, and talk things over, and move on, i dont know

This is just a perfect song. I agree that they couldn't have possibly chosen a better song for the finale.

This song to me is about someone leaving and the person who was left is just realizing what is happening. "Crop circles in the carpet", from furniture that had been there but is now gone, "Oily marks appear on walls Where pleasure moments hung before" pictures that are no longer there, "Mmm, What'd you say? Mmm, That it's just what we need You decided this" indicates that the person that is being left doesn't want it to be that way. It's a leaving song which makes perfect sense for them to play it when they did on The O.C. ...anyways, thats just my opinion.

I just got the actual lyrics from Imogen Heap's websites...posted by Immi herself:

where are we? what the hell is going on?
the dust has only just began to fall
crop circles in the carpet, sinking, feeling
spin me around again and rub my eyes
this can't be happening
when busy streets a mess with people would stop to hold their heads heavy
hide and seek
trains and sewing machines?
all those years they were here first
oily marks appear on walls
where pleasure moments hung before
the takeover, the sweeping insensitivity of this
still alive
hide and seek
Trains and sewing machines? oh, you won't catch me around here
blood and tears
they were here first
Mmm, What'd you say? Mmm, That you only meant well
Well of course you did
Mmm, What'd you say? Mmm, That it's all for the best
Of course it is
Mmm, What'd you say? Mmm, That it's just what we need
You decided this
Mmm, What'd you say? Mmm... What did she say?
Ransom notes keep falling out your mouth
Mid-sweet talk, newspaper word cutouts
Speak no feeling, no, I don't believe you
You don't care a bit, you don't care a bit
Ransom notes keep falling out your mouth
Mid-sweet talk, newspaper word cutouts
Speak no feeling, no, I don't believe you
You don't care a bit, you don't care a bit
(You don't care a bit)
Oh, no, you don't care a bit
Oh, no, you don't care a bit
Uh-uh, you don't care a bit
You don't care a bit
You don't care a bit

I've been listening to this song for about 15 minutes....and I still can't figure it out. Hm....I'll post again later?

I think this song is about someone discovering and dealing with the fact that thier lover is leading a second life with them. "Hide and Seek" symbolizes the mistresses' search for the truth about her lover's love life, which he tries desperately to hide. The "trains and sewing machines" would represent the cheating lover's child and wife, respectively, who were "there first", before the beginning of the adulterous relationship. The mistresses' reaction to the idea of her lover belonging to another woman is expressed through "the takeover, the sweeping insensitivity".

His censorship of the truth and of his feelings are represented through "newspaper word cutouts" and "mid-sweet talk". The "ransom notes" falling out of the cheater's mouth signify how he has freed his mistress by breaking off the relationship, but has taken her heart in exchange. She feels used, and thus does not believe any expression of emotion her cheating lover tries to appeal to her with ("speak no feeling, no, I don't believe you"), stating only that he "doesn't care a bit".

Maybe off but it makes sense to me.

Wow. This song is great. I think the most profound thing about it is though, and nobody has mentioned this yet, is that she sings it solo, with no instrumentation.Just her and a vocal effect. I think it really adds to the feel and emotion of this track. :-)

I love this song. Like everyone else said perfect for the OC finale. In whole I think a girl is mad at her boyfriend for betraying her, like someone says above^. This is what I think certain parts mean:

“the dust has only just begun to fall” - the consequences of what happened or what you did are just beginning

“What'd you say? That you only meant well, Well of course you did. What'd you say? That it's all for the best, Of course it is. What'd you say? That it's just what we need, You decided this. What'd you say? What did she say?"- I think she is saying this sarcastically, saying to him this is all your fault, you did it for yourself. (on the OC when Marissa shot Trey, I can see this NOT being sarcastic; Marissa saying he had to be shot, it was for the best...)

“ransom notes keep falling at your mouth” - they keep making excuses

The lack of music in this song makes it so much sadder. There's no drums or guitar to cover up the silences, you have to face them.

crappypunkrock99 is so true. He makes some really good points and i just wanted to put in my say, that this song's silence is daring and amazing. I have yet to see another artist try this and succeed as much as she did. Thejetsetlife, i can relate, i've been listening to this song non-stop (repeat)

when she sings, "Sinking, feeling
Spin me around again
And rub my eyes
This can't be happening" I believe she is imagining what life was like with her spouse, and now she is left with a depression, desiring to be treated teh flirtatious way she had before, by him spinning her around and ksising her. In addition, the "rub my eyes" could mean that he used to whipe her tears from her eyes. Stunningly powerful song.

go back and listen to about the last minute of the song... there is some instrumentation that's more evident there.

also the part where it goes "oily marks appear on walls" (about 1:45 into song) you can pretty clearly hear some type of keyboard or synth. - definitely something non-vocal.

graciem, i think you wrong. this is her voice put through a doubling or tripling effect, and sythesised, perhaps using a vocoder. her voice is being put through an effect, and anything else you can here is just the reverberation of the effect she is using. also, i like how OC*fan put it... the lack of actual instruments and players, makes this song sound very lonely and much sadder. the effect is most likely pre-programmed and she is just singing through it.

Signed up JUST to comment on this song! ;)

To me, this song is about a life left and a new beginning for a new one. The song speaks to me through the eyes of a child who as been stripped away from a life and brought to a new unrecognizable place filled with memories of another family.

"Where are we? What the hell is going on?"
- Just arrived at the new house, still can't believe what's going on, that they left a life and are starting a new...

"The dust has only just began to fall / Crop circles in the carpet"
- The previous family have left not to long ago (from the dust that has just started to settle), but have lived there a long time, so long that the furniture has left imprints in the carpet...

"Hide and seek / trains and sewing machines"
- Hide and seek symbolizes the hiding from the new life as well as seeking out to begin it... or possibly, what we did as kids in a new place... seeking out the hidden cracks and cubby holes and hiding. Trains and sewing machines; trains being how they arrived, and sewing machines, not in the literal sense but "fixing" machines that will attempt to repair the old life they once lived.

"All those years / They were here first"
- All those years they lived here before

"Oily marks appear on walls / Where pleasure moments hung before"
- Again, evidence of a life lived here before in the house...

"The takeover / The sweeping insensitivity of this"
- this speaks of the takeover of the house and how insensitive it is that one can just strip another of a life once lived in a house filled with so many memories...

"Mmm, What'd you say? Mmm, That you only meant well / Well of course you did / Mmm, What'd you say? Mmm, That it's all for the best / Of course it is
Mmm, What'd you say? Mmm, That it's just what we need / You decided this"
- This is expressing that the child never wanted to leave and that the parents made all the decisions without thinking about how the child would feel...

anyhoo, I didn't mean for this to drag on... just thought I'd express my two cents. I guess this song touched me this way because I went through this and the sinking feeling she speaks of is exactly how I felt and that I didn't feel my folks cared about how I felt at all.

Funny how songs can tell the story of our lives so sweetly sometimes...

Cheers

This is such a great song. I've been listening to it nonstop on my iPod.

I think the song relates to a breakup or someone leaving. Perhaps a parent or a boyfriend.

"The dust has only just began to fall" - the worst is yet to come
"Sinking, feeling
Spin me around again
And rub my eyes
This can't be happening" - She can't believe it's happening, it's unbelievable.
"Oily marks appear on walls
Where pleasure moments hung before" - she still remembers the fun they had
"The takeover
The sweeping insensitivity of this" - self explainable
"Blood and tears
They were here first "-she's been replaced
"Mmm, What'd you say? Mmm, That you only meant well
Well of course you did
Mmm, What'd you say? Mmm, That it's all for the best
Of course it is
Mmm, What'd you say? Mmm, That it's just what we need
You decided this
Mmm, What'd you say? Mmm... What did she say?"-she's bitter that he thought it would be better if they seperated / left eachother
"Ransom notes keep falling out your mouth
Mid-sweet talk, newspaper word cutouts
Speak no feeling, no, I don't believe you
You don't care a bit, you don't care a bit" - the ransom notes, mid-sweet talk, and newspaper word cutouts are the excuses, but it is said without feeling, he doesn't mean it.

I think the HIDE AND SEEK implies their relationship. It's on and off, not stable.

The whole song in vocal was perfect. It implies her total loneliness. I loved the song!
